I'm sorry but a couple of posts in this thread have made me quite literally laugh out loud. People citing Chael Sonnen as a boring Lay and Pray artist? The guy has one of the most active top games I've seen, he is constantly looking to land shots, looking to land anything. Sure they're not the powerful or hurtful of shots but he is always active, always has a fist in your face, and to tar him with the Lay and Pray brush just smacks of complete ignornace about MMA.
I'm not a fan of wrestlers as a whole, I understand the skill involved but I agree with Nick Diaz in that a lot of wrestlers dont show up to the win a fight, they show up to win a match if you get what I mean. But Chael Sonnen is no safety first blanket like Fitch or like Koscheck was against Daley. The reason he finds himself getting submitted so much is because he stays busy and takes the sort of chances that means he leaves an arm in somewhere he shouldnt, like the end of the Silva fight.
Its fine to be a fan of Anderson Silva, but you're only harming your own credibility with comments saying that Sonnen did 'nothing' for 4 and a half rounds. First off, everybody is different, some fighters mark up really easily, Sonnen and Fitch are both good examples of this. I swear if those two were to be involved in a pillow fight with a couple of schoolgirls they'd come out looking like they'd been in a car crash. I've never seen Anderson marked up at all, and from the amount of strikes that Sonnen landed on him you'd expect to see something... so I'm going to say that he probably has quite durable skin. However if you remember the end of the Silva vs Sonnen fight, Anderson had to be helped to the back after the fight as he had taken a beating on his way to picking up the win.
As for Chael's smack talk - last night was genius. People were already talking about the Sonnen vs Silva rematch, like it or not the last time they fought Silva was a little over 2 minutes away from losing his belt, it was that close. Sonnen is the only person to mount a real challenge to Silva since he joined the UFC, aside from Palhares it was probably the only match it made sense to make. So what does Sonnen do? He adds a whole new level of hype to it, a loser leaves town match? really? It feels like something straight out of the WWE but it works, its already got me hyped and I tell you what... that is going to sell PPV's by the dozen. Even if Chael loses and does leave the UFC it makes perfect sense for him, he hasnt got many years left in him most likely, for a main event he will get what 3% of the PPV? 1.2 million buys at $70 a pop... Easy money.
As for Gulliard, I'm so glad he got taken down a notch, I have never liked him, even before he joined up with Greg Jacksons camp and actually started winning. Lauzon is an extremely dangerous fighter early, kinda like a skilled Phil Baroni... and just like Baroni the more he fades as the fight gos on, but Melvin didnt respect that, and he paid the price. Good.
