OK, total FM noob here and I need some tips...

Managing Notts County in League 2 and am having a nightmare. Played 20 games and only won 2.....second from bottom....knocked out of the FA Cup by a none-league team....players with low morale.....arg :(

Tried different formations and tactics with no joy. No money to spend on players, although I did sign two scouts and sent them off. I'm on the verge of resigning out of pure embarrassment :o

Help?

Curio.

I started a game as Oxford in the BSP a few weeks back and had back to back promotions (title winners too) from the BSP and League 2 so will list a few people that I managed to sign for Oxford either as a BSP side or a League 2 side that might be available to you.

Admittedly Oxford are a good side at lower league level to start as. I was getting almost 6,000 a week in the BSP and almost 9,000 fans in League 2, so the income was higher than most.

Take a look at the following players:
Magnus Svensson -he is 37 at the start of the game, and a good DMC to get you started.
Emil Solomonsson (sp) - decent right sided attacking midfielder.
Andreas Galaskov - Decent young striker, got him on a free transfer
The Puri brothers (awesome players)

Out of interest, who are your parent club? Can you not loan from them? I have Chelsea, and in the BSP they loaned me Sergio Terjera (now signed permantently for club record fee of £300,000) and Jack Cork. Season 2 I got the same plus Michael Mancienne.

I have the legendary Robert Pires running my midfield at the moment.

On the up side, ive just done a squad audit using scout, and ive got 30 youngsters with PAs higher than 170!:D

Im in september now, and ive worked out that at the end of the season i'll need, due to age/fallen abilities:
1xDC
1xDR
2xAMC

And if Cassani takes an ability nose dive like Alves has, a DL.

The DC can be taken up by a 24 year old Finnish player.
The DR can be taken up by a 20 year old Italian ive got out on loan at another seriaA club whos doing well.
That leaves me with 2xAMCs being needed. I can get Nasri for under £30m i think, then i can promote one of my promicing AMCs as well i suppose.

My only doubt is that the young DR might not be suited to my system.
His acceleration/pace is 14/14.
Stamina is 15.
Tackling is 14.
Positioning is 12.
Not the finished article, as hes currently at 148/180, so all but his speed should get better i suppose. Is 14/14 good enough for Memphistos tactic though?

Vela scores for fun for me. As an AM I would highly recommend him.

Does anybody on here actually put a reserve keeper on their bench?

I've probably played over 50 season of football over the years in FM and I can't say I've ever seen a keeper get sent off or injured.

I must have gone the last two versions of FM without putting a keeper ever on my bench (bar friendlies to give the other guys a run out).

I tend to do

D
D
M
AM
ST

Preferably
DL/DR
DC
DMC/MC
AML/AMR
ST

I nearly always have all bases covered on the bench, apart from when I have a couple of injuries or suspensions.

I lost the champions league final when my goalie got injured in game and no sub. Was winning 2 - 0 with Arsenal. Lost 3 - 5! So any finals I always put one in, just in case.

OK, I must be doing something really wrong. I started again with Mansfield in L2. Got 3 pretty good players on loan from Championship teams - the adviser said they are much better than anyone in my team. My own striker has been banging in goals none-stop, resulting in other teams wanting him. Won first game of the season, drew the second - and now I've lost about 6 straight and find myself 3rd from bottom :( I just lost 5-1 to Darlington who are/were 2nd from bottom! Also, the board won't even talk about getting a parent club.

I don't understand what's going on :o

Oh, and why does the scout always give me the exact same report on my next opponent - did they only program 1 in or something

Because your scout is likely to be pants given that your in League 2. Also, being as your early in the season the information held on teams is likely to be limited.

What tactic are you using?

My first try I was just using 4-4-2 while I was getting used to the game. With my current game I've been using a diamond formation as I think it suits the players I have better. I guess one problem is that I'm not sure how "hands-on" I have to be - should I select every opposition player and tell my team how to handle them? Should I be constantly tweaking my tactics during the game? Or is it more important to get the basic positions/formations right and let them get on with it? Same with training - do I let them get on with it or really spend a lot of time working with players on their weak points?

Thanks :)

In lower league football the individual instructions for each player isn't really considered relevant because of the level of play and the difference in quality with the top division sides. That said, I would still do it.

I usually create my own tactic depending on the team I am playing as and their squad. However, in my Oxford game I used Kimz Version 2.1 tactic (available from SI Games forum) and I have won back to back promotions with it without making any tweaks.

I also do not touch any of the pre-game opposition tactics either on the "borrowed" tactics. When I create my own tactics, which is all the time bar the Oxford save I usually tweak in game and pre-game opposition tactics depending who I am playing. For example, if I play Chelsea I always man mark Drogba.

As for training, if you do not understand the process fully and how it works then it can be impossible to understand. The majority of people us a pre-made template someone from the SI Games Forum has created, SCM's is pretty good for this.

What I would suggest, especially if you are like me and don't like using someone elses tactics is goto the Tactics/Training Forum over at SI Games and look for some threads created by Cleon. He is some kind of tactical genius and has posted many posts (lengthly guides actually) on training and tactical bases theories behind the game and its AI.

Thats how I learn't.

Your defender get 9?

strange enough he only bagged 1 :D

they are a low / non league side, but still great win, i was 7 - 0 up and half time and then said "i was angry at half time" always works if you score a few in the first half

LOL I give up. I hadn't saved for a couple of matches, so I tried the Kimz tactics (and used them 100% as directed) and played Darlington again. I lost 7-1 this time. And I'm sure the goal I scored was exactly the same as before. Not only do I not understand what I'm doing wrong, but now I get the impression the results are predetermined and it doesn't matter what tactics you use. Sigh.

just sold a player called Javier Arizmendi - because i could not stand looking at his freaky face! - let him go for 4mil, player was worth 12 :D

TTIUWOP. :D

Marc, just been looking back through the thread and was wondering what skin you're using? Looks very old school CM (97/98 stylee). Cheers.
It is Metallic (right). Meant to be similar to FM08's default skin. It is made by Marc Ackter if that helps. :)

Edit: Found a link for you. :) http://fmclub.extra.hu/index.php?option=com_remository&Itemid=0&func=fileinfo&id=409
