gah, I completely suck at this game :D

When I start a game I tend to bring in a few coaches to bump up the training ratings, then I build a tactic from the back to the front based on the players I have at my disposal.

The tactic tends to work very well in the preseason games but when it comes to competitive games I always tend to be on the verge of the sack after getting humiliated by the diddy teams early on in the league.

Think I really need to get back to basics from the very start, I have failed miserably with spurs, man city, rangers and celtic

loved 06 , but started 08 with newcastle and it's too hard, switched to spurs and the same, the difficulty level on this is way higher, shame for a noob like me its ruined the game

It isn't so much it is more difficult just they have tweaked the game engine so any tactics you used before aren't really usuable now without changes. I noticed the difference between 06 and 08 which took a bit of getting used to for tactics plus the training side. There are lots of forums with training and tactical help to give you a better idea of what works now for the 08 version.

You also have to take into account the game engine still needs a bit more work on it to deal with a few issues that the proper patch brought up again after previous fixes.

1. Closing down still not perfect for defenders etc
2. Striker finishing was meant to be improved but seems it went the other way for player controlled teams and improved for the AI
3. Long shots are bugged so if you set them to rarely the instruction is ignored.

With all those issues plus the change in tactics 08 can be a frustrating game until you get to grips with it or use someone elses tactics to give you an idea of what works best. We are all here in this post to offer any advice you need or point you in the direction to find good guides/tactics/training schedules. If you haven't looked at the first post in this thread there are some good links there to tactics etc that might give you an idea or at least let you use them to fine tune/create your own versions of it. As even with the patches tactics that worked in the first beta patch need redone for the official full patch so we are all struggling to adapt each patch that hits us.

I am doing OK with Man Utd using SCM's tactic. Interestingly I notice that my MCs hardly score at all.

Scholes has played 13 games scoring 1 goal. Anderson has played 26 games scoring 3 goals. Carrick has played 18 games scoring 2 goals. Hargreaves has played 19 games scoring 1 goal. Fletcher has played 3 games and scored 0 goals.

I have Scholes and Hargreaves set to long shots often yet they score nothing. In FM versions past Scholes especially could score loads of goals from long shots. So is it FM08 changing the match engine or can I tweak the tactics for my MCs at all?

If you go into the individual player settings, select the player you want to change and change the long shooting to the middle if it isnt there already. From reading the main forums creative freedom might need to be changed on a player to player basis, as my original tactics hasn't got that turned on for the players i have due to them being pretty crap in this stat.

Yeah i did a version 3 of my original tactic earlier in the post

http://www.stonecoldmicks.co.uk/Downloads/4-4-2SCM3.tac

This one has more creative freedom and a higher tempo game which suits the top teams, all you would need to tweak in this one from the off is the long shooting on the players to rarely for some and mixed for others, turn off closing down in individual player instructions and let the team closing down instructions be the one you use. You might just need to tweak it a bit until you find a balance that works, as i haven't tested this due to being at lower league levels and one other thing i have now found is making one of the midfielders drop back.

I will upload the new version of the original tactic once my ftp is working again which should be later today. Also if the tactic can't be downloaded might be the ftp security update causing issues but hopefully it doesn't affect downloads but only uploading.

SCM

It will be the same link for my original tactic will just overwrite the file on the ftp but if you want to add the 3 version as another link be handy to have them all in the same place.

SCM

But if the new tactic will overwrite the current tactic on your FTP account doesn't that rather defeat the point of making a new link? They'd both be the same?

The revised tactic for my original 4-4-2 SCM corrects some of the issues the new patch has brought into the game and the revised version of this now works, as it stands right now the one on the ftp is not suited for the new patch with a lot of issues i found while testing it. Will make it 4-4-2SCMa for ease then, as might be handy having the old and new version especially if people haven't updated to the newer patch yet.

This version corrects some of the issues currently in the game with closing down, shooting etc well as best as we can for now.

Has anyone ever come up with a good 4-3-2-1 tactic for 08?

I find that i rarely do well with that formation against the big teams, and have to keep reverting back to the tried and tested 4-1-2-1-2 formation to get results against them. Which i dont want to do, as i used that formation for 15 seasons in my 07 save. :p. lol.

There are a few versions of that tactic online on a few web sites in the tactics or downloads sections

http://www.fmglive.com currently undergoing a reworking of the webpage but the forums still work which is where the tactics can be obtained from.

It isnt a tactic i have used myself yet but a lot of people on the sites listed above seem to do well with this formation.

Started a game as Napoli, doing okay so far. signed up one of those Barca players mentioned in this thread, the left winger. Napoli also start with Hamsik, and Lavezzi so should be fun.

brought in Ignasichev and Marko rehmer for some defensive stability!

You also have Caliao I signed him for HSV when I was there manager and he is a great target man especially with Olic along side him with pace, Lavezzi isnt as quick (17 pace 17 accel i think) but his finishing and composure is top notch, should have a very nice strike force at Napoli

I'm pretty sure there is a nasty long shots bug in the current patch of FM2008 (8.0.1) which hopefully gets fixed for 8.0.2.

To be honest with the corners bug, overly good AI strikers, long shot issues, closing down bug (which is still not fixed) the current state of the game is I find unplayable to a certain degree so I'll stop until 8.0.2 comes out and hopefully that sorts all the issues :)

Dying to play it as well but starting as Sunderland is near impossible, never expect to get them high up the table with the squad but it's a case of a win in every 5 or so games with a seriously good tactic due to the bugs.

If anyone needs a good keeper, that'll join most clubs - Corradini from Inter (i think) hes 18, and comes in at about £35k.

A few of my tips for FM08:

-- Tuia is a good long term buy.
He's a DC with the potential to be better than Barzagli, one of the best DCs in the game.

-- VDV is a bargain at £13m. He's just as good as Kaka for my Milan side.

-- Structured deals is the way to go if your short on cash. Little up-front, loads of clauses, like x amount over 6-12months.

-- If your after some good midfielders on the cheap, then look at Milans team.
Ambrosini wont cost you much, but is as good as Pirlo for me as a pure DM. Excellent man marker, great defensivly, and good in the air. And can be had cheep. On another note, Gourcuff can probably be had on the cheep as well. Given time and games, he's an excellent MC/AMC. Also look at Brocchi. Think of him as Gatusso on the cheap.

-- Cassani should be bought by anyone who wants a versitile defender. Imagine a player like Alves going forward, who defends like Maldini at the back, and can play on BOTH sides.

-- Okaka from Roma is a good buy for people who want to build a young side. Think of him as the next Drogba.

-- If you move quick, you can get Mascherano on the cheap near the end of his deal with Liverpool. Keep declaring interest and bidding for him, and by the time you can approach him, he'll be easy to persuade to come to you without wanting extortionate wages.

-- Akinfeev: I cannot stress how good this guy is. Ive loads of keepers over the 07 & 08 games, and Akinfeev is by far the best.
Im in my second season in 08 as Milan, signed him for £20m, and he is like a rock now. Hit/miss at first, so rotate him with your 1st choice every few games or so, and then pretty soon he becomes a wall.

Some nice tips there BoomAM. :)

Scouting them all now. Trying to get VDV to replace Scholes so that I can choose from Anderson/Van Der Vaart which I think would be a nice situation to be in. Only got £6.6m at Man Utd so I will have to wait until the end of the season and get some money for him.

If you have spare wage budget Marc adjust the transfer budget from that if you are able, very good way to raise transfer funds fast if you need it. Just don't go too far or you wont have wages left for any signings you do get in.
