***** The Official Galaxy Nexus Thread *****

Not really. ICS is brilliant, it's a massive improvement. Finally I tend not to use 3rd party apps and use stock instead. There are plenty of great features I think a lot of people haven't even seen yet (video coming tomorrow ;) )

But... stock ICS can't be themed. Stock ICS can't be undervolted to improve battery life.

As I said, Android is about having it how we want it. For me Android is about hacking around (well, using other people's hacks) and changing it, trying different ROM's with different features. Why do you think they make it so easy to unlock the bootloader? Nexus' are a dev device.

Android is versatile enough that we all get what we want. :)

Well ive really been round the houses trying to get my phone to update.

After trying about 6 times some one on XDA said that it was because my bootloader was unlocked, tonight I locked to bootloader and did a factory reset and still my little green android friend fell on his back with a red exclamation mark grrrrrr.

I booted into recovery and wiped every thing, rebooted and tried again but with the same result.

In the end I installed the official factory image ITL41F and its all up and running with the update.

I still dont know why I couldnt install the official OTA update, anybe CWM or something else to do with me rooting it was causing the problem ?

Anyway im happy now :)

one thing i keep doing is pressing the home button when i go to press 'space' on gmail and texts... grrrrrrrr

Saying that, I always seem to manage to hit the letter 'b' rather then space.

Oh, and long pressing the home screen for widgets still. FFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!

EDIT: Andy beat me to it

I heard about it but not got it yet. The new desktop version is out in New Zealand apparently, don't ask me why. The new Android version is in testing apparently. I keep squeezing the bottom of the phone for home (iPhone user) so it is going to take a while to get rid of that habit!

Everyone is praising ICS saying it's brilliant and finally what Google needed, if you've said something like that yet you've put a custom ROM on your phone, you're a liar.

I love ICS but I put a ROM on my phone to get the volume fix initially. Then I realised I could also get a tweaked backlight that doesn't make the screen look grainy, the legacy menu button both sides to make one handed operation easier, as well as a landscape launcher.

I understand the appeal of pure ICS and I understand why people don't want to change it. But for those of who do, don't criticise yeah?

You don't need a ROM to do most of that though, which is my point. I'm not criticising anyone, people are perfectly fine to put ROMs on their phones, I'm just saying that it's a bit pointless in my opinion when it comes to this particular device.

If the phone has such shortcomings where you feel you need a ROM for something, I think that's just a bit of a shame.

These devices are designed for modding. The bootloader is very easy to unlock and Google themselves provide a clean OS image for download. The phone is intended as a platform for development and modifications, and it has been the same with every Nexus phone so far. People develop ROMs usually because there's something they'd like to add that appeals to them. It doesn't mean that there was something missing in the first place, or even that Google has made some kind of glaring oversight, but they do it because they can. That kind of freedom is nice.

I don't get it either. Why do you see them as shortcomings Robbo? Two are bugs that were fixed quicker in custom ROM's is all, and others are about personal preference as I've explained a few times.

As we've also said, the Nexus is a developer device, not a flagship phone as some people seem to think for some reason.

I suppose it's because over time, putting a custom ROM on a phone - to me - makes it feel bodged. I'm not saying people shouldn't do it.

'Bodging' a device with TouchWiz is more forgiveable than bodging the pure Android experience that the Nexus is all about (I know it's also about being a developer phone too, but not for me). :)

I'm not saying either of you are wrong, just that I've gone off it, that's all.

I initially thought it was a flagship phone, but Google and Samsung's complete FUBAR of the launch has convinced me that it was never really intended to be one. The fact that it hasn't even launched in the States yet just backs that up.

I expect we'll see a whole host of new ICS devices at MWC in February and that's why.

I agree with the bodged thing. I think I see where you're coming from now. Mine always feels bodged until I'm running a very stable, well supported release, and I don't like that, but hey - you gotta break some eggs if you want an omelette... :D

I certainly wouldn't install a ROM with any themes or visual enhancements beyond the trivial. It's all about getting the beef of ICS to me. Otherwise I may as well not bother with Android in the first place.

Hopefully the first official update from Google will address these problems, that's what I'd like to see. Google sorting the stuff out instead of relying on XDA-Developers to sort out problems that they should be taking care of in the first place. :)

Why do you think they feel bodged? Because they aren't intended to have custom ROM's put on them.

Why do you think most Nexus devices have some of the most stable ROM's on them?

You're making it a little too easy tbh... ;)

All devices have shortcomings. For example, I loved the iPhone 4 but jailbreaking it and customising made a good phone great.

Adding a customise Rom and tweaks is no different to downloading an App. You want a device to do something extra it didn't stock.

each to their own really, but my view is i would root and rom 99% of android phones but not this one, well maybe root as that has good features, hopefully it will be able to be done soon without wiping the device (i think that is still the case)

but as for roms im staying 100% with google, as i said before so many roms have bugs you find out at awkward times, they corrupt or the devs stop working on them. The only reason i used roms was to get closer to stock, which i now have. The only roms i liked were CM7, but again happy with what google give me for now.

each to their own though, i dont wanna shoot anyone down, its all freedom we get with android :)

Facebook update is out.
Menu now works.
Contacy sync is still disabled.

Does the battery get better on this over time? Ive had this GN since monday, and this morning it just dropped 11% from 45mins of web browsing! Wifi on, 3g off, bt off & brightness at 10%.
Hope it gets better....
And it take it that i awoke to it charged at 98% that its doing the 100-98% trickle discharge/charge thibg when its got a constant AC source?

45 mins of web browsing is actually high usage. Anything that has the screen constantly on for prolonged periods of time will suck juice out of the battery.

Idle battery performance does improve slightly over time but active screen battery performance never improved for me.

I never bothered with the Facebook app, used FriendCaster. Contact Sync has worked on that since the phone came out.
