*** The Official Google Nexus 7 Thread ***

I'm not really sure why anyone is finding this hard to follow. I don't see where I was being controversial.

Robbo, you seem to be a bit more with it than the average punter, why do people get so tetchy over this stuff?

People tend to get a little bit edgy when a person lays some praise on Apple, I'm not sure why, I find it easier to just appreciate both sets of hardware/software and buy what I fancy.

General opinion is that iOS is smoother and definitely more refined than Android in general. However the difference in smoothness between the Galaxy S III and iPhone 4S for example would be very, very small and could tip either way depending on what you are doing.

It's something that Google are obviously aware of, hence why Project Butter exists.

Apple are inevitably going to have an easier time with this stuff, as they make the hardware and the software all in-house, Google and Samsung/HTC/etc don't.

Just take my posts as I write them, don't use me as some kind of stick to beat another member with please... :p

And all of you calm down, or I'll have to fetch the Palm Pre...! ;)

You see Oliver is just trolling, instead of expressing his android hating comments in a mature meaningful way, he goes and whines whines whines. But me and u however had teh exact same convo and guess what, no whining, no arguing. nothing.

u made your points, i made mind, end of teh story but this apple fan comes in here whining and moaning and crying on how android is inferior to apple.

I don't think that was his intention, there's just a bit of confusion.

If he was an Apple fanboy I doubt he'd have a One X (and like it :p).

Staying out of this android VS apple argument! :D

:p

There is no argument.

We have Ol!ver saying he feels iOS is a bit smoother and refined in general compared to Android. His saying that is based on having the HTC One X, which is a top of the line phone so is a fair benchmark in that respect. He hasn't said it's bad or anything. That is a perfectly fair comment, you can't try every single device out there and they are all setup differently so people are going to have different experiences.

Then we have jonney who is calling him all the names under the sun and accusing him of being an Apple fanboy just because he made an observation that plenty of other people would agree with.

A very odd and frankly pointless discussion! :p

No offence to jonneymendoza, but he does have a habit of flying off the handle a bit, and the way he writes his posts often misrepresents his position.

Frankly I think you're all just jealous of BlackBerry owners! ;)

Amazing to see Google doing so well!

Yep, that is really, really good. It sounds excellent as well. Though he didn't compare composing messages (in the car for example), and it seemed to struggle a bit with reminders, thinking they were an alarm.

The Verge have just published their Nexus 7 review:

Google’s Nexus 7 isn’t just an excellent tablet for $200. It’s an excellent tablet, period. In fact, it’s the first Android tablet that I can confidently recommend to buyers — and not just because it’s got a low price tag (though that certainly helps). It’s a well-designed, powerful, and useful product, with lots of bells and whistles that makes it feel like a device that should be more expensive than it is.

There are still issues that need to be addressed — particularly around growing the tablet app footprint and expanding content offerings — but I don’t think those are deal breakers. The Nexus 7 delivers way more functionality than I expected, and it delivers it in a package that’s sleek, smart, and affordably priced.

Believe it or not, the last time I was surprised by a product with those same qualities, it was called the iPad.

Epic!

even at the current price point i dont think it will get much use for me because when im at home i rather browse the net on my desktop or laptop. At work i work infront of a desktop so again i cant see much use for this.

It sounds to me like you're trying to convince yourself not to buy one... :p

On my way to and from work it may be useful but only if i cache all the websites, articles etc before heading off as this device doesnt have 3g connection and wireless is useless 9/10 places u go.

Hardly an issue with wifi hotspot on your phone?

Hovering on buy but just wondering if anyone has heard anything with regards to either the OTG adaptor or HML?

Update: We received some bogus information on the MHL. We've now confirmed that the Nexus 7 does not support MHL, meaning there's no way to connect this over HDMI to get video output.

(From Engadget)

The £189 place are going to have tens of thousands of orders (at least) and they only have 500 in stock was it?

Yeah, have fun with that. :p

Ah, I thought you were talking about the OCUK competitor, not Currys. You can say Currys as far as I know.

Just a question regarding google music :p, what happens if you upload some emmmmmm........... illegally acquired music albums? Can google see that and do they delete/remove the music and send an email or whatever stating why? Or is it ok and nothing is done?

I'm pretty sure most of it is 'questionably acquired', so I wouldn't worry about that. :p

I don't think you can as they sell PC components as well.

RTM! BAN ROBBO!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

:p

Yeah, but it isn't their main business practice (like the other DSG store), so it's fine.

GAME for example sell some of the same games as OCUK, but they aren't a competitor.

If I'm wrong then I'll see you all next week. :D

What interests me about the Nexus 7 isn't the hardware itself or even Jelly Bean, but does the fact Google are selling these to the UK market via the play store signal that a full roll out of Play Store to the UK is near? At the moment we don't have access to Music, magazines or buying movies (only rental).

Seeing as Google are apparently breaking even or making minimal profit on the hardware, the strategy for the N7 is to lock people into Google's content delivery. That's not exactly going to work in the UK if those services remain unavailable.

I feel the next stage for Google is to sort out some kind of iTunes competitor, they've laid some of the foundations for it with the Play Store, so I think you may be right.

Just to be clear, by iTunes I'm referring to the content delivery system, which Android currently doesn't have... or it's not comparable to iTunes anyway.

I'm really looking forward to it. Once I sell my iPad that's me done with Apple as I'm sick of their litigation tactics. Once again Samsung can't sell a device in the US. No more money from me for Apple.

Samsung have tried the exact same litigation tactics, just with no success. The intent is still there, better not buy anything from them either. :)

Or HTC, or Motorola, or... *insert list of almost all large companies*

Oh please.. behave yourself
Even you cannot seriously suggest these companies are in anywhere near the same league as Apple when it comes to ludicrous court claims.

No, Apple are winning because they have better patents and a better legal team.

If it was the other way around Apple would have issues. I'm not saying I care either way, it's something all companies do.

Apple are also smarter and lucky with the timing, GN gets blocked just before the release of Jelly Bean, and GN being the only phone that will get this any time soon it will be a huge blow to google.

Will be intresting to see how google reply.

Google won't do anything, they're using the other companies to fight their legal battles in order to shield themselves from it. Crafty!

Apples success in the courts wasn't what was being questioned but nice diversion :p You're turning into the Alistair Cambell (not Darling!) of the OCUK forums ;)

What do you mean diversion? Are you saying that Samsung, HTC and even Nokia haven't tried to sue Apple? I can assure you they have.

The thing is, Apple have been more aggressive recently, but it's swings and roundabouts. They just get more coverage because hey, it's Apple and everyone loves to hear about them; good or bad.

It's cool to hate Apple now apparently.

I think it's more a case of people reading between the lines and seeing what they want to see, unfortunately.

apparently its cool to be a android hater ;)

Not again please.

He's not an Android hater, surely you can see that. He has a One X and likes it, but doesn't treat it as some sort of infallible object of perfection.

I have critisised the one X more then most one x users and also was only kidding with my post hench the winky smile!

Did u honetsly thought that post was serious? I dont think even Oliver thought it was serious. come on robbo!!!

I don't know really. It's good that it wasn't serious then!
