*** The Official Google Nexus 7 Thread ***

Just went to F2FS yesterday on my 16gb 2012 model countcussy.

It seems pretty decent so far after a days use, but I've barely got anything stored on the thing just now.
Installed the DirtyUnicorns 4.4.4 ROM, and am pretty happy with it. Had been using Paranoid Android on EXT3 previously.

Guess it'll be a week or so before I know if it's made a real difference.
I'd say you'd be as well give it a shot, there's nothing to lose and a lot to gain.

I bought one for my son a few weeks back and it's got somewhere in the region of 15 to 20gb of apps on and doesn't appear to have slowed down at all? What's this slowing down to a crawl pace that everyone mentions caused by? His is totally stock 4.4.4

Definitely the 2012 model and not the newer one?

Mine is unusable after a week, tried F2FS and it still isn't great.

F2FS has transformed my 2012 N7 so definitely give it a try. I converted mine over a month ago and it shows very little sign of slowing down so far. Previously, it was unusable because it was so slow and laggy.

You couldn't point me in the direction of step by step instructions could you?

My N7 2012 is so slow it's virtually useless these days.

For people finding their N7 slow, use the flash trick. I did it with mine and its pretty much back to how I remember it.

- Factory Reset
- Clear all caches
- Use Forever Gone to clear all the free space on the flash memory (set it to Airplane mode to stop is going update crazy while trying to clear the flash)

You will need to get Forever Gone from somewhere like Aptoid as its not on the Play Store any more.

Its to do with TRIM and the flash memory. The version of Android that came with the N7 didnt TRIM properly, and once you had accessed all the space on your flash memory it starts to crawl. Newer versions of Android TRIM properly, but it only works on fresh blocks it accesses, stuff that was borked before remains borked. Forever Gone fixes it :)

Mine was a factory refurb, that came with 4.2 I think, as soon as I got it I updated it to 4.4.4 without doing anything else, and it seems great, think it should be ok or do I still need to do the above?

I've tried this today. Factory reset with Google Image 4.4.4, cleared caches and then booted up and installed Forever Gone. It took an age to write and erase 28gb of space. Rebooted and have now installed several apps, used BBC iPlayer and everything seems much faster now. I will load up a few more apps and then test it fully later. See if it gets any worst.

Finally feels like we might both be able to use our tablets (fiancee has a 16gb and I have a 32gb) like they should.

hmm I thought I would have a go at clearing the cache out anyway just to be safe, cant get into recovery for some reason, vol down + power button and then select recovery and it says no command or something?

There's a button combo, one sec...

Once you get to no command, hold power and press volume up and you should get to the next screen.
