**** The Official Google Pixel 2/Pixel 2 XL Thread ****

Just picked up a brand new 64gb Simply white non XL for £440. So far very impressed, coming from a Sony Z5 Compact I've had for just over 2 years.

Still really impressed with the camera. Noticed that depth perception doesn't work well with reflective surfaces however, which is understandable.

Charging is becoming really bad - had my phone on charge for half an hour the other morning, after I'd forgotten to charge it overnight, and it didn't go up at all. And started discharging straight away.

Pixel 2 XL?

By any chance, was it cold when you were trying to charge the phone?

I plugged mine in Sunday morning and GSAM battery monitor told me the phone was about 15c. It refused to charge at all, remaining on 27% for half an hour. I stuck it under the duvet for a few minutes and it shot up to 36%. My phone does not seem to charge at all when cold, so maybe it's the same issue....

Shouldn't really happen though!

I mean, it certainly gets cold in my apartment, but I have the radiator to come on 15 mins before waking up, so it isn't too cold. Room temp is probably about 10-15 degrees.

I have written at length about this very issue, probably a few pages back by now. My 2XL was doing the same thing, I was conducting various experiments and recording everything via AccuBattery. Bottom line was the problem was very difficult to artificially replicate although I did notice that on the three most notable occasions they were all early morning, first thing and with a cold phone so I reckon there is an element of truth to that.

Google agreed to RMA my device no questions asked (beyond the usual) however I was reluctant to do it at the time as I had a busy week ahead of me with various trips out of the office and really wanted my phone on me for music/videos and not to mention to keep in contact with anyone as I'd no spare to get my hands on. So I left it a week and after a factory reset and changing my charging habits the problem disappeared and I've had no issues since so I cancelled the RMA.

Other things I noticed is that mine seems to prefer getting to full charge and letting it drain down to 40-50%, I wouldn't voluntarily drain it down to 15/20%. I was keeping my phone topped up between 50-80% regularly and I think doing this for too long messes with its battery calibration (probably nonsense but I definitely think it behaves better with a full charge i.e. 90%+).
Also these phones won't quick charge when the display is on (or at least not at full speed) so it ends up being a vicious circle when you're constantly checking to see if it's charging quickly, it's best to just leave it alone.

Finally, uninstall accubattery! It did me no favours at all. In fact it's just another unnecessary thing to concern yourself with. I even went as far to remove the battery % from my notification bar, I don't need to know it exact % every minute of the day, when it dies it dies - I enjoy the bliss ignorance :p

It's all a lot of faff for something that should work - that's the problem. I detest factory resetting. Adding in all my apps, downloading all my music and ringing my banks to reset my accounts to sign into them again. So. Much. Hassle.

If I have to do that more than once, I'm selling the phone and buying an iPhone.

By the sounds of it you might as well just sell up now, it sounds like it's just a matter of time anyway. No point hanging in hoping it's going to be fine when it kinda sounds like you've made your mind up anyway.

I haven't yet - hoping it can be resolved via software updates. I'll speak to Google when I can be bothered to deal with their OTT, false personalities :p

i had an issue with my 2xl not charging either even after unplugging and re-plugging but then i turned the USB c adaptor around and it started to quick charge again. so i wonder if there is an issue with the adaptor?

Bah, charging problems on my 2 XL last night. Plugged it in last night (using my MBP charger as always) and assumed it would be on charge but for some reason it didn't charge so I woke up this morning at 7am and it was on 10% :(

It starting charging when I unplugged and replugged it in, so I left it charging for the hour or so before I left for work and by that time it had only got to 18% - and didn't say 'Charging Rapidly' on the AOD either.

First time I've had any issues like this. Used the Pixel charger from the box when I got to work and it's charging rapidly like normal - can only assume there's USB-C compatibility issues between the MBP charger and Pixel...

Mine is intermittent with the MacBook charger also, especially when the battery is low. It sometimes needs to be plugged in for 20 mins before it'll even begin to charge. I came to the conclusion there must be some sort of handshake issue with the MacBook charger which is a pity as it's damn handy having interchangeable chargers - the MacBook charger stays at home and the Pixel charger in the office that way I can always keep both devices going.

Enrolled on the beta but still no update for me.

I find USB C can be fussy depending on cable and charger combo used. I have a 38w ravpower usb c outlet and a belkin usb c to c cable and that rapid charges. I've also tried the samsung combo form an s8 and that didnt work so well. I know why though, in order to rapid charge I believe samsung poush power over the data waires. A true usb c cable to the proper spec does not. I think.

Edit: I have a wall outlet with built in usb sockets and I plug my phone in overnight using an Amazon Basics USB c cable. Doesn't rapid charge but always at 100% when I wake up.

Mine has seemingly been charging alright lately. Quite quick even. I forgot to charge it the other night (at least, I think I did - unless it in fact failed to charge for no apparent reason), but when I plugged it in for 20 minutes it jumped from 51% to 71% which seems a fair result. This is using the standard charger.

USB-C is a bit of a ball-ache though when you have a shed load of MicroUSB chargers though and only one 'C' charger. I can't even use the powerbank I bought a few months back. It's damn lucky this thing has really good battery life.

The FPS has been OK lately - I'm inclined to think I just have oily skin and that's causing it to malfunction at times, but I still say the one on my iPad Pro is distinctly better.

Overall, things are running pretty well. I am STILL using the default home launcher which is unheard of for me as a long term Nova Prime user. It just works. Basically just a row of folders on the bottom for commonly used apps, and the search bar gets used for almost everything else. Nice clean home screen, and I still like the live wallpapers. This phone seems to have more or less cured my non-stop desire to customise anything and everything.

In all honesty though, I think if I did have loads of problems with this phone, like another poster, I'd just go with the iPhone. None of the other Android offerings seem remotely appealing now.
