**** The Official Google Pixel 2/Pixel 2 XL Thread ****

Agreed, although I don't see the point of 18:9.

If the Pixel 2 had the same screen but was 1cm shorter top and bottom then I'd be happy. I think the problem is that they are cramming in the same innards as the XL so the body requirement for all the electronics has led to the bezels, like having to accommodate this second SoC for the image processor (which isn;t even being used, but that's another matter...)

Coming from an iPhone though it doesn't really bother me tbh

I would say this is still subjective. In fact, I can understand that a lot of new devices are coming out with much smaller bezels, but I would say extremely dated is a bit much. They're still the same size as the iPhone 8 surely? I would guess that's this years top selling phone (or will be) so surely the design isn't 'extremely' dated?

I don't see the point of going bezel-less just because you can. Edge to edge for many is rather annoying.

And the iphone 8 is also extremely dated looking. I don't expect GS 8 slim bezels but iphone 8/pixel 2 are just stupid looking in this day and age now, also, I have no issues with the sides bezels, it is just the top and bottom.

Phones released these days should have at the very least a 70% screen to body ratio, which isn't exactly asking a lot since most phones have this i.e. the nexus 5, lg g5 and so on. The pixel 2 has 67.9%

Those of you with handsets, what's the brightness like out doors. A few reviews says they're not especially bright but are just about viewable in sunlight.

Has anyone had any luck finding decent screen protectors for the Pixel 2?

Ordered some of the JD ones, but they're horrendous. Almost like a tempered protector, doesn't stick at the edges either!
I gave up finding one for my first gen Pixel due to the issue of it not sticking to the sides. I went with just a skin but then regretted it when I cracked the screen :( When I eventually get the screen sorted I'll likely just put a bumper on it and forget about a screen protector.

Spigen worked fine for me on the original pixel. They just haven't released any yet!

I'll let you know next time it's sunny.. which might be a while *glances out at the rain*

I went and looked at both Pixels again today. Vivid display was enabled on the LG but I disabled it on the HTC, the HTC still blew away the LG in terms of colour representation. I didn't see any distortion on the LG screen though and if my phone is the same when it arrives then I think I can live with it. If I do find distortion then I will send it straight back and keep my original XL as the screen on the HTC is far too small for my liking.

Got a response from SPIGEN

Thank you, I'm afraid as of right now we do not have plans to release them in the UK, but it might change it the future. Please keep checking our website for updates.

Great!

I went into CPW this lunchtime and finally got to see the handsets side by side.

I left thinking the XL 2 is the one to get for a couple of reasons.

The Pixel 2 screen just wasn’t as bright and seemed more muted and no way near as vibrant as the XL 2.

The screen real estate on the XL 2 is just crazy. It felt so much better in common day to day tasks such as browsing and consuming content. The only negative some may find is the video doesn’t go to the edge but I think it was a non issue you need to hold it somewhere.

The speakers are a step up from other phones but nothing that made me go wow and would rather use bluetooth speakers to listen to extended music but from YouTube and Spotify it hits the spot fine.

The camera is amazing for photo and video. The video stabilisation was something else! Really happy about this one as could pan and move without jerky movement. It was locked down with the security wire and it still coped fine.

The XL2 is bigger but felt fine to hold and felt more weightier and premium. Shame I could not try the pocket test but I’d love to maybe just go with a bumper and enjoy the phone for what it is and hope the technology employed to prevent screen damage works.

The screen issues being mentioned weren’t obvious to me. I compared both side by side. The main thing I could see was when tilting the phone to the side the XL 2 was more blue tint and the Pixel 2 was more whiter but a murky subdued white.

When opening up Chrome, the Wallpaper, YouYube, Messages, Settings, Keep the XL 2 just seemed so much nicer.

The phone is expensive yes and may have issues but I intend to keep it for 2/3 years and now swaying towards spending extra and getting the XL2 over the normal one.

What is Vivid display? Could this have skewed my perception of the screens?

Vivid is just a tick box in the display settings screen. Can't honestly say I can notice much difference between the ticked or unticked setting though, so its effect is very minor.

Surprised you preferred the XL display!

I was surprised myself. I went in thinking the worst. I even took a mate in and just said look at this and this and tell me which screen looked better. He said the XL display also.

I will go in one more time and ask for it to be removed from the security so can test in varied light and test in the pocket.

The smaller HTC one just didn't seem as punchy. Saying that the iPhone 8+ still seems stellar for an LCD panel that I was testing with also.

At the end of the day it will be a big step up from the Nexus 5 I had and the LG G4. Once you start using the device as your own daily none of this will really matter as long as it does the tasks I need it to do (Chrome, WA, Keep, Camera, Video, Banking)

Managed to grab some AtFolix screen protetors from Amazon.de

Used them on my S7 previously and was impressed, they offer full coverage due to the material they use.

£18 delivered, pack of three. Should be here next week!

The blue tint when tilting is pretty terrible.

And before people say I only view the screen head on, the blue tint starts almost immediately off axis. Plus when sharing the screen with others etc... Poor show.

I think you can chill now! Google is on the case. They confirmed people’s complaints on the 2 XL display and will “look into” adding more options to control the colors on its display. It said today:

"We designed the Pixel 2 to take advantage of multiple facets of the innovative new POLED technology, including QHD+ resolution with 538 pixels per inch as well as a wide color gamut. One of our design intents was to achieve a more natural and accurate rendition of colors. We know that some people prefer more vivid colors, so we’ve added an option to boost colors by 10% for more saturation. We’ll continue to pay close attention to people’s responses to Pixel, and we will consider adding more display color options through software if that makes the product better."
