**** The Official Google Pixel 2/Pixel 2 XL Thread ****

I think you can chill now! Google is on the case. They confirmed people’s complaints on the 2 XL display and will “look into” adding more options to control the colors on its display. It said today:

"We designed the Pixel 2 to take advantage of multiple facets of the innovative new POLED technology, including QHD+ resolution with 538 pixels per inch as well as a wide color gamut. One of our design intents was to achieve a more natural and accurate rendition of colors. We know that some people prefer more vivid colors, so we’ve added an option to boost colors by 10% for more saturation. We’ll continue to pay close attention to people’s responses to Pixel, and we will consider adding more display color options through software if that makes the product better."
Chill? Always.

It's a hardware fault, there's no software that will fix that blue tint issue. It wasn't there on the OG Pixel because it had better developed hardware. This is LG's first major OLED for mobile and it shows. Put this screen up against a Note 8's display in sRGB mode to see how it should perform.

This.

And despite all this, I still bloody want one - but the screen issue is just stopping me buying... my S8 has just gone all laggy and weird.

Has anyone received their Google Home Mini yet with the Pixel 2 deliveries? For the Google Home newbies (there is a separate thread on Overclockers for Google Home), here are some of the fun things Google suggests you can do on your new Mini:

"

  1. Find my phone: When you lose your phone in the couch cushions, your Assistant can find it for you. “Hey Google, find my phone” will ring your Android phone (even if it’s on silent) or your iPhone.
  2. Set a sleep timer: Fall asleep to the sweet sounds of your favorite music or podcast by saying, “Hey Google, set a sleep timer for 30 minutes.”
  3. Play news by voice on your TV: Stay on top of current events with YouTube news playlists from sources like ABC, Fox and NBC. With a Chromecast-connected TV, you can ask say: “Hey Google, play the news on my TV” or “Ok Google, play sports news on my TV.”
  4. Turn the TV on and off: With Google Home, Chromecast, and a compatible TV you can just say “Hey Google, turn off the TV.”
  5. Enable night mode: In night mode, Mini’s lights dim and the volume lowers so that you you don’t disturb others in your household when it’s late (or early).
  6. Set a default TV or speaker: Choose a Chromecast-connected TV to be your default screen, so you don’t need to mention the device's name in your voice command. When you say “Play yoga videos,” they’ll play on the TV you’ve set as the default. It works the same way for speakers connected to Chromecast Audio—you can designate a group of speakers that cover several rooms (“first floor,” for example) as the default."

From what i can tell you'll get an e-mail after you've received your phone with a code. Sure i read somewhere it might take 6 weeks to get the code which is abit pants, i want to sell it straight away hah

This is a picture I took, from an angle. I still think it looks great, no?

And here they are side my side...

All this talk about the screen on various websites reviews makes it sound like some people are trying to sell it Like a duff budge.

It's bad screen, it's a bad a screen. End off.

Well I went into CPW after work. They only had the Pixel 2. - Which looked very nice btw, and the bezels aren't as bad in the flesh as they look in pics and videos etc.

So I went into the EE shop who did have one. But some little **** broken the charger earlier that day apparently and it was dead. So all I could do was look at the blank screen.

FML. :p

The 2XL did look great though! Just a shame I couldn't see the display in action.

Interesting article about the screen and how Google can change the colour with software.

They seem to be saying its more accurate and we are used to seeing over saturated screens that colours.

I like the idea of more options then everyone is happy :)

That’s exactly the problem. Thing is, because it doesn’t look exactly how the Samsung ones do, everyone loses their minds and goes crazy about how it looks dull.

Yet, people complained the old Nexus 6P display was too saturated, so we ended up with enable sRGB mode in dev settings

sRGB is exactly that no matter how you cut it.
And on the XL2 it doesn't look like it was calibrated to that profile as it should have as the reds look lacking and almost brown in some pics. It's not like the sRGB calibration is something new, Google implemented it way back on the Nexus 6p and it was done well even back then. Something is amiss with LG's OLED panel and I'm sure the details with come to light soon.

As said before compare sRGB modes on both the Note 8 (which is on point) and the XL2 and you'll see the difference and how it should be.

With the off colours, some graininess and the blue shift it's not what you'd expect at this price point.

Yeah I agree. But I like the idea of having more colour profiles that way everyone is happy.

Yeah, I didn't necessarily say it didn't, just that it looked great ;)
FTFY.

As I've said before the 'washed out' colours are not my concern, the grain/blue tint are. I've said before I always switch my phones to sRGB straight away. I have my S7E on basic because I prefer it to Samsungs over saturated default.

Agreed.

Now that was an interesting read.

As I've said, and the more I see/read I can't help but think there are some dodgy screens/batches/etc going around. You only have to look at the top few submissions on r/GooglePixel at the moment to see that.

Great screen: https://www.reddit.com/r/GooglePixel/comments/77cuys/holy_cow_the_2xl_is_frigging_amazing/
Terrible screen: https://www.reddit.com/r/GooglePixel/comments/77f1bt/i_didnt_want_to_believe_itbut_this_screen_is/
Great screen: https://www.reddit.com/r/GooglePixel/comments/77h3ul/just_got_my_pixel_2_xl_unless_there_are_bad/

etc.

Again, here's another bad example of the blue tint, yet some aren't anywhere near as bad as that. Hmmmm, I dunno, Guess I need to see what my one looks like when finally get it!

Edit:

**** it, just going to stick with the pixel 2 or maybe even the pixel xl 2 if price drops for black friday, samsung gs 8 is great but tired of reading reports about them slowing down 6+ months later.

Hence why I'll never go with anything but stock Android (though OnePlus' version and the like are fine). The silly skins and bloat just bog the phone down after a few months. It's been the same on every Samsung device ever. It's why a lot of people like Sense UI (HTC) because it was very lightweight and didn't slow down like Samsung's did.
