**** The Official Google Pixel 2/Pixel 2 XL Thread ****

Has anyone with the new Pixel 2 been using the Google Lens feature to identify an object or storefront and with what results?

Pleased or disappointed so far? Any examples?

.......Hopefully, Google can learn from this as they have the software absolutely nailed.

Spoke with Google customer service today regarding my Live Case order and its shipment date this week. It is expected to arrive tomorrow.

While on I also spoke with the Pixel team rep who said that Google was aware of a few reports of the burn-in issue and would do what is necessary to address the issue, if indeed it is other than potentially a small, bad batch. It seemed to me that software resolution of any issue is possible through advanced display options for vivid colours.

I am sure those sceptical of this being resolved or those who might believe they have a problem, will have plenty of options available including returning their phones within 15 days of delivery.

They also confirmed that estimated shipments in the UK from their warehouse will begin on 13 November for first orders from the Google Store, EE and Carphone.

I am confident that the phone I tested on Tottenham Court Road and which AndyCR15 also reviewed extensively will be the same as the Panda 2 XL I receive next month.

Great review, now I REALLY want one :D

As mentioned yesterday following conversation with Google Customer Service rep, they estimate shipping to Google Play Store, EE and Carphone on 13 November. Not long to wait.

I expect my Panda 2 XL soon after 13 November. Carphone had a shorter waiting time than the Play Store so I opted to go with them this time. The Google Customer Service rep assured me that wherever I buy the phone from the three names above, there will be ample opportunity to return if any of these fore-mentioned issues actually materialise on their phones.

I estimate that 90%+ of Pixel buyers will never notice the issues (if they were to exist) that we tech geeks discuss at length here.

Ahem. Display panel issues with the Apple iPhone X? Check out the latest rumours.

"
Apple's iPhone X shipments may only be half what was expected--Nikkei

Apple's iPhone X shipments may only be half what was expected--Nikkei....a report in Japan's Nikkei newspaper that iPhone X shipments will only total above half what was expected this year. Shipments are expected to total around 20 million units, the Nikkei report said, as Apple has struggled to solve technical issues with components supporting the new face authentication feature.

The problem was that at the beginning of mass production, there were defects in the bonding process for organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panels, the Nikkei reported. Although the problem was largely resolved around July, manufacturers were only above to improve the "first pass yield," or the number of good units, toward the end of September, the report said. Apple is believed to have started negotiations with other manufacturers over additional production of certain parts, the Nikkei reported."

I wonder if these negotiations include LG? If so there will be pressure on Google trying to secure next run Pixel unit display screens.

Word to the wise Pixel 2 buyer: get your order in early to avoid disappointment. I have said this all along.

Large bezels, design is not symmetrical, no wireless charging, inferior water resistance (to Sony and Samsung), inferior display, only 4GB of RAM (6GB should be the minimum now), no audio jack.

.....

"Large bezels"---I played with the Pixel 2 XL in store and the bezels were hardly noticeable.
"Design.." ---- so easy to hold this phone in the hand.
"no wireless charging"....who needs it? You have super fast charging on the go---many have reported 50% charging in 15 mins.
"RAM" ----RAM meet Google Cloud. No contest.
"No audio jack"---he shrugs shoulders.

Agree with jimlad.....phone of the year.

Keep it on topic please...

Why do you only ever want to discuss negative Apple news I wonder :D

It is on topic.

One of the most frequent topics here seems to be rising phone purchase prices and where is the best value phone, esp considering purported phone faults. Comparisons for the new Pixels seem to be phones from Samsung and LG and Essential, but rarely Apple. Why?

Apple has opted to bring out the most expensive mainstream phone ever (I believe) and has enjoyed little comment on this thread in comparison to the value of the Pixels. Perhaps we all assumed that they would simply bring out the iPhone X with no glitches. Is Apple substituting quality for quantity with the X? If Google tried this with Pixel there would be an outcry. None for Apple?

What this article I linked to in Bloomberg tells me is that to execute with no flaws on a new phone launch is really almost impossible to achieve.

Someone, somewhere will always seem to find fault.

Chasing the impossible dream?

For those that were asking about updates, Google just launched the Android 8.1 Dev Preview.

One of the main new features is called "Neural Networks API". Google says it "provides apps with hardware acceleration for on-device machine learning operations." Probably means it makes use of Pixel Visual Core, the second chip (SOC)recently discovered on the Pixel.

Final release of 8.1 expected around December.

Interesting stat mentioned today on TV: Pixel 2 pre orders double what they were on Pixel 1.

This is despite the comments about the display screen problems!

OK, so here is Google's official comment on the 2 XL display concerns and a promise to fix the "clicking noise" on the 2 (a software bug on the NFC functionality, according to Google).

"We’ve received some feedback about the Pixel 2 XL displays not appearing as saturated as other phones. We attribute this perception to our choice to calibrate the Pixel 2 XL for delivering natural, accurate colors, taking advantage of the new color management support in Android 8.0 Oreo.
........
Based on the feedback we’ve received since announcing Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, we learned that some users do want even more vibrant colors. So, through a software update to Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, we will soon be adding a new “saturated” color mode."

And regarding the "burn-in" effect, they say:

"We’ve received reports of Pixel 2 XL devices exhibiting image retention on the screen and have been actively investigating them. Extensive testing of the Pixel 2 XL display show that its decay characteristics are comparable to OLED panels used in other premium smartphones."

Yet they are making two changes to the way the screen works:
1. The nav bar buttons at the bottom of the screen will fade out when not in use, and
2. They’re dropping the display’s maximum brightness by 50 nits — an amount they say is “almost undetectable”, but that should reduce strain on the display “significantly.”

And of particular note, they are extending the warranty on all Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL's from 1 year to 2 years!

Seems to me Google is telling you they are serious about their long term commitment to their hardware business.

I noticed a few comments from those buyers of the Pixel 2 XL in the U.S. who have received their phones and have been using them for a few days.

Do you believe them to be accurate and perhaps what our reactions are likely to be next month?

Comment 1. "The Pixel 2 XL issues are not that bad.

Yeah, Samsung screens are a bit better. But the Pixel phone's camera is much better than Samsung's. I look forward to developers writing some apps to output raw image files."

Comment 2. "
It's amazing all the haters out there. You'd think you couldn't read text on the display or something!

I received my Pixel 2 XL yesterday. I was worried with all the coverage that I would be returning it instantly - but that is far from the case. The display is substantially better than my 1.5 year old Samsung S7. Also better than a iPhone 7 Plus. I will admit that I haven't seen every new phone, but the display the great. I am willing to believe that it isn't the best of this year phones, but it more than good enough."

Comment 3. "My wife and I got our Pixel 2 XL a few days ago.

Compared to our Pixel XL (1st gen) we noticed that the colors look different (more "washed out") and that there is indeed a blueshift when you tilt the phone. We didn't notice any graininess.

After a couple of days of using it, I got used to the colors. I noticed that it's easier on my eyes. It's true that orange icons such as the Google Keep icon look quite different but I don't find it unpleasant. I think I will keep the current color scheme when the update comes out.

I don't think the blue tint is fixable but it's not something that bothers me.

Overall, I feel the issue has been exaggerated. I am grateful that the warranty has been extended especially since this is an LG-made phone and all of our Nexus 5X (5 of them!) broke eventually due to the same motherboard failure (4 of them in year 2)."

Comment 4. "Don't worry. When the iPhone X is released they'll move on to the iPhone X display **** show."

Comment 5. "Just got the 2XL this week. One thing that has confused me is the issue with blue tint when viewing at an angle. I definitely see the tint... but when checking it out I realized also never look at my phone at those angles.

I'm curious about what use-case is affected by this: are people trying to use their phones flat on a table or something?"

Anyone figured out how to try these AR stickers they made a fuss about?

Nothing to figure out yet. The update to both Google Assistant and Google Lens to enable many AR features including stickers is expected in late November/early December, according to a recent note I saw in Android Authority.

If you have children like I do, I hope the Star Wars AR stickers appear just before the launch of the The Last Jedi!

Here is the link to which I refer:

For those that have downloaded the Android 8.1 Developer Preview 1 last week and noticed that the Pixel Video Core that uses the custom chip introduced by Google to make further improvements to its camera (HDR+ functionality) was not included, it appears now that Pixel Video Core will be introduced in the Android 8.1 Developer Preview 2 expected to drop in Late November.

To confirm, Pixel Visual Core is Google’s first custom-designed co-processor for image processing and machine learning on consumer devices.

I am looking forward to getting my Pixel 2 XL order in a couple of weeks and playing with those apps that can take advantage of the Pixel camera.

As those who follow reviews will know, Sean Hollister of CNET has discussed the "burn-in" issue at some length and decided to raise their concern directly with Google yesterday as they discuss in their note.

Bottom line: Google making software changes soon and warranty to cover some possible display related defects for those that experience them. Google has tested a "statistically significant" number of Pixel 2 XL's recently without finding any defective units.

And it looks like the Australian's are impressed with the new 2s!
