**** The Official Google Pixel 2/Pixel 2 XL Thread ****

Keep it on topic please...

Why do you only ever want to discuss negative Apple news I wonder :D

It is on topic.

One of the most frequent topics here seems to be rising phone purchase prices and where is the best value phone, esp considering purported phone faults. Comparisons for the new Pixels seem to be phones from Samsung and LG and Essential, but rarely Apple. Why?

Apple has opted to bring out the most expensive mainstream phone ever (I believe) and has enjoyed little comment on this thread in comparison to the value of the Pixels. Perhaps we all assumed that they would simply bring out the iPhone X with no glitches. Is Apple substituting quality for quantity with the X? If Google tried this with Pixel there would be an outcry. None for Apple?

What this article I linked to in Bloomberg tells me is that to execute with no flaws on a new phone launch is really almost impossible to achieve.

Someone, somewhere will always seem to find fault.

Chasing the impossible dream?

...

probably the same reason apple has it's own section on the forum

JUST got back from an EE where i had a look at the P2XL.

the screen is certaintly duller. i had RGB enabled on my 6P and nexus 5 i think was only rgb, however when comparing the XL2 with the phone right next to it in store, a samsung note 8, the screen just looked so incredibly dull even at full brightness, the whites in particular just didn't pop in any way at all. i hope on it's own it's fine and i can easily get used to it as i've always preferred this look in previous phones over the super colourful screens, however it was very noticeable this time around. i forgot to enable the vivid colours unfortunately so can't comment on what improvement that'd have made.

unfortunately the phone is wrapped in a unmoveable stand so i couldn't hold it or view the back in any way. something that did concern me though was the design of the screen to body. on my pixel 1 xl, without a case on if i close my eye i can barely feel where the edge of the screen stops and the body starts, other than it being a different material it's very smooth. on the xl2 there's a very noticable difference, almost like it's got a case on it already. i feel if i used my nail very lightly to scrap along the screen until it hit the body, the nail would catch the edge and be stopped. this wouldn't normally be so bad but because it looks like (i can't be sure as i said i couldn't hold the phone) the part where you hold the phone in your hand on the edge is where the 2 connect so you'd feel that connection line along your hand if that makes sense. if i run my finger/hand along the edge of my pixel 1 xl, it's nothing but smooth metal. if i run it along the xl2, it's where the screen joins the body and it's not smooth.

because of the curved screen edge design, though this isn't limited to the P2XL, if i were to put a case on this phone that goes slightly over the front of the screen (such as this spigen case) i worry this will make a small almost moat like area all around the phone to collect dust and grud. my xl1 has a case similar to the one i linked to, and because the screen is smooth and flat all the way to the edge, i can easily wipe the whole area clean, but i fear this moat area will be harder to clean, and harder to use tbh with a raised case. you wont be able to follow it wrap around with your finger because the case stops you.

i'm still keeping my preorder as i'm one of the first in line, however i'm much less excited about this phone then i should be. i think had google not replaced my 6P with an XL for free, i'd be much more excited. 6P to XL has improved everything, however it feels like now if i upgrade my XL to the XL2 i will be getting some things better and some things worse.

Sounds like they've really cocked up with this. I had a few problems with this phone but probably could have forgiven it IF it had a good screen, but it really doesn't sound like it is. The problem with the screens is, as I found out when I went from a Galaxy Note 2 to a Nexus 4, you never stop noticing the deficiencies of a screen, particularly when you've got used to a better one. So while I did like my N4, I always wished it had the quality of the Samsung screen. The difference is, the N4 was so much cheaper than the competition. This one is going toe to toe with an iPhone 8+ and the Samsung S8 and N8, so there is no excuse. Add to that the bluetooth is apparently still problematic, and it makes it very difficult to spend £800 on this no matter how good the software experience may be (particularly when you can get much the same for half the price with the older model).

More android authority videos and they don't seem to be hating on the screen. I am very confused. Lots of the big name reviewers have said it's not the greatest but not damned it at all.

So yeah I am probably gonna keep my order and see for myself.

Not ideal though.

Would be nice to have an official response from Google on the matter

indeed. keep the order. you get a full refund so just make sure you don't fully switch over to this phone for a day or two if you've got any small doubts.

While we are discussing value in mobile phones:

"Apple reduced FaceID accuracy to ease production: Bloomberg"

Is this worth $ 999 in US and more here? How "reduced" is FaceID accuracy?

http://uk.reuters.com/article/us-ap...cy-to-ease-production-bloomberg-idUKKBN1CU1AV

"The quality and accuracy of Face ID haven't changed. It continues to be 1 in a million probability of a random person unlocking your iPhone with Face ID."

For those that were asking about updates, Google just launched the Android 8.1 Dev Preview.

One of the main new features is called "Neural Networks API". Google says it "provides apps with hardware acceleration for on-device machine learning operations." Probably means it makes use of Pixel Visual Core, the second chip (SOC)recently discovered on the Pixel.

Final release of 8.1 expected around December.

Ooh! Anyone want to be a guinea pig for the Bluetooth issues?? :p

Edit: signed up so I'll just play the waiting game now...

Sweet, that will be nice to have. Strange it was not ready with the launch

So this basically confirms it. In short if you wear sunglasses a lot the Pixel is awesome. If you don't then the blue tint is terrible.

In a way this is actually great, as I always have to remove my sunglesses to see my phone in the sun, but on the flip side England doesn't have a lot of sun. :p

You think England doesn't get a lot of sun?? The guys from Google should spend a few days in Northern Ireland. In fact they could stay for a whole year and the shades might come out once!

Samsung OLED displays have had a polarised display since the S6 - certainly no major colour shift on my S7 edge when I tilt the device.

DisplayMate:
The ideal solution is to set the polarizer angle to 45 degrees so that the display is equally bright in both landscape and portrait orientations – unfortunately many LCD technologies can’t do that. OLED displays don’t emit polarized light, however, all of the Galaxy OLED displays (including the S6, S7, and Note 5) include a polarizer (as part of a Quarter Wave Plate) to significantly reduce screen Reflectance of ambient light, and… it’s oriented at the ideal 45 degree angle so you can watch the OLED screen with polarized sunglasses in both the portrait and landscape orientations!

Tint is not an issue for me. Really does not bother me. It's all the other rumours I hear about the screen that causes concern. I don't wanna be dealing with RMA's via EE a few months down the line
