**** The Official Google Pixel 3 Thread ****

It's certainly a frustrating time to be in the market for a phone.

My 2xl is fine for now but I'm not convinced it's going to last; it's now showing early signs of hardware failure (weird banded, flickering display sometimes when you wake it up)... So I think I'm going to be forced to consider my options.

I like Android, especially stock but as many of you seem to agree, Google really is dropping the ball big style at the minute.

Early next year my workplace will be getting the XR and I'll be able to get it free and for a tenner a month. We don't unfortunately get the option for the costlier devices. One thing that worries me with that is the camera, no optical zoom and it's going to be worse than the 2xl here never mind anything newer and the camera is quite important to me as I don't have another camera to use.

I could probably live with iOS in all honesty, I've already got an iPad Pro 10.5 and it would play nicely with this. I'd even consider a watch, an option not available in the pixel line up.

Hell if I could have done a straight swap for an old iPhone X I would have but despite the fact they were only £200 more when new they are now worth double on the second hand market. Even the 8 Plus, in many ways just as good as the 10 is commanding a large premium over my 2XL.

I guess I'll just keep it until it eventually dies, which it inevitably will soon I feel, and then review my options, but I'm struggling to think of a period when I was more apathetic about the whole thing as I am now.

The camera on the Xr is the same as on the Xs and is pretty good. Video on the iPhone also tops anything Android has to offer.

The thing I cant get over tho with other Android phones is the as and when O.S updates.

The Galaxy S9 is about £500 on the Rainforest currently. But I still can't choose it over a Pixel 3 due to the O.S upgrades.

I'd be unhappy waiting around for months and months in limbo waiting for O.S updates.

I'm actually on the cusp of preordering the Pixel 3. Google are promising 3 years of O.S updates so should last me 3 years.

Only reason why I am upgrading the Nexus 5x is because it's last update is officially in Nov 2018.

£740 is still way beyond what I'd normally pay for a phone.

If the Nexus brand was still around then the cheaper of the two would have been my handset. As it is Google have just carried on with the Nexus design but jacked up the prices to flagship.

---

Decided to hold off the preorder just yet.

Is anyone moving from a 2 XL to a normal 3?

I see the screen size on the 3 is increased since the 2 and it's now closer to the 2 XL size. I'm really tempted, but will have to hold my 2 XL next to a 3 in order to guage the difference. I do feel sometimes that my 2 XL is slightly cumbersome when used one handed, but not annoying enough to go back to a proper small phone... Maybe the Pixel 3 could be a nice in between solution?

Now that security updates are seperate, it's really not that big a deal any more. Sure if your main interest is being on the latest OS release then it'll still be an issue but as far as security goes samsung are leagues ahead of most other manufactures now. I mean the guys in the p20 thread still sitting on July updates ...

I asked the guys on the P20 thread the other day, they're upto September. Not perfect, not terrible either.

I'm on August on my OP5.

The XS has dual camera lenses though, which would be a nice to have for the optical zoom capability. Granted my current phone doesn't have it, so... Never take any video either so that's not really a problem anyhow. I'll wait and see what they're like.

Yep though who knows when I'll get mine due to an upgrade/preorder disaster with EE, my account is currently locked. I would really like to get the phone with them (free phone, 40 pence a month - yes seriously don't ask) but I won't be able to place the order until my account has been fixed. I compared phones in the EE store and I think I'd welcome the size reduction especially when using a bare case which has already shipped.

Pixel 3 would be my choice between that and the XL. I do at times feel like the XL is just a smidge too big really. I thought having a bigger phone would make it easier to type on but I'm still making lots of errors on the bigger phones. I sometimes wonder as well if my thumb has too far to stretch to get to the space bar as the main error I make is hitting that bloomin period key instead of space all the time (seriously why does nobody make a keyboard with a proper size space bar?). The battery life thing with the bigger phone is possibly not going to make anyone's life that much easier these days. And... No notch! (Sorry)

I found the 3 to be very small, too small for my liking. Out of the 3 and the 3XL the 3 was my pick at the start but having seen them both in store the 3 was way too much of a downgrade in screen size from my 2XL. Don't forget that although there is an apparent 0.5" increase in screen size from the 2 the aspect ratio has changed considerably from regular 16:9 to 18:9. Hit up displaywars.com and see for yourself. The width of the screen is exactly the same, all you're gaining is height. This is fine for portrait use and general browsing but in landscape and for videos (unless you crop or stretch the video) the usable screen size is actually the same.

I don't get the hate for 2:1 screens. Much more visible space when typing with the keyboard, and many videos are now in super wide format so it's better for those too, and if you blow up a 16:9 video you're barely losing anything.

I don't hate them at all, I was sceptical at first but they're fine for me now. I do more often than not blow my videos out to full screen as well. But I just think people should be made aware that it's not a true 5 to 5.5" upgrade.
