Tricling is the key though. I wonder a week after release how many actual gtx480 has hit the uk shores. It seems the semi-accurate infor of only 8000 cards worldwide seems true to me.

Diudn't Nvidia say a few weeks ago they had thousands ready to ship?

Today bought a terrific Asus GTX480 @ retail in a shop :D  (could even have bought 2 for SLI but its a pointless waste of money when 1 will last for a long while to come ;)) The Asus packaging is very sturdy & well presented it also has several layers & everything in the box is inside its own little box. Packaging is 10/10 from me :D Its definately a very hefty card to hold & only a few mms longer than the EVGA GTX260-216 its replacing. Weight wise its about twice as heavy  No time to install until the weekend (when I may buy a 980X to go with it :D) but have taken some box pics obviously ;) Looking forward to putting all those stupid fanboy too hot, too noisy urban legends to rest as I have a very high end case with plenty of ventilation ;)

Nice to finally see someone with an Asus GTX 480. AWPC please keep us informed on the volt modding if you have the time. :)

Will do but first I want to see how it performs @ stock then I will dismantle & put some better thermal paste on before pushing further ;)

Any chance you could put a pic up on how you apply the paste on the card please ;) what paste you using ?

Try this excellent guide someone else did on their GTX480 (I'm using it to do mine but until I see what its like on stock!). Its done on an EVGA 480 but the hardware appears to be identical & the bios on the first batch of 480's are all the same apparently (Shame EVGA are taking so long to get theirs into UK as Germany has had them for 2 weeks now apparently!)

re:

I guess a word of warning and something to definitely think about is that you could void your warranty if you remove the cooler / paste etc ???
I guess some brands will be ok but others not, on any expensive card it worth a thought;)
Cheers

Great guide. Ordered some MX-3 and gonna give this a go!

MX-3 is a bitch to spread, its almost impossible. I use Arctic Céramique instead on gpus and I always get good temps and it spreads real easy. I do use MX-3 on my cpu however. :)

I'm waiting for someone to put up some results with the Prolimatech MK-13 on the 470/480GTX.

pcgameshardware put up these pics of it on a 480 but no numbers. I'm thinking a 470 SLI setup with these could be fun to play with.

Having used MX-3 a few times I would recommend the finger bag method (assuming you don't do that already) (new/clean small plastic bag stretched over finger). You usually get a thinner layer of TIMM too.

I tired that mate and it all stuck to the cling film and none would stick to the chip. I gave up with the gpu and just put on AC.

I use the grain of rice method on my cpu which worked really well and I saw a nice drop in temps. I really do rate MX-3, its just a pig to spread.

If 470s were same price as 5850s i would buy two of them tomoz and run em.

As opposed to buying them and keeping them in a display cabinet ;)

Seriously though, I still think I would go for the 5850 and clock it to a 5870. If the 470 was the same price and run at similar temps then it would be a decent card.
