***THE OFFICIAL GTX480/470 END USER REVIEW THREAD***

Again, for comparison - The "dip" in the third scene is very hit and miss - sometimes you get a dip, sometimes you dont  Its just as blokie is climbing up the ladder to the container

Doesn't need to be hacked, works fine on any brand of 4XX series as far as I can tell. To enable to voltage tweak you just go into the settings and check the box. Just download the latest one from Guru3d.com

I've set up a custom fan profile to gradually ramp up and keep temps below 80 if possible. I found the fan at 70% a bit more distracting last night than my old 280 and, as I've mentioned above, I'm not happy with the temps when running 2 screens. I have my TV plugged into the 2nd output as I like to watch downloaded tv, films etc on it and I'm not having it running at nearly 90c when idle in the desktop. Hopefully RT will come out with an update as that allows for much lower clocks than other bits of software do.

@Coupe69 - What is the default voltage on your POV? Mine shows up as 987mV in Afterburner...

I tried the custom fan profile, but it eats up cpu time and it's not smooth increases or decreases like using hardware auto

When I enable voltage control it defaults to 1000mV.

As I mentioned in my posts
here:
http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showpost.php?p=16378455&postcount=256
and here:
http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showpost.php?p=16378455&postcount=260

The core appears to be factory set at different voltages. The norm being 1000mv, mine @ 1025 and others being anything from under 1000 to 1050mv. I had assumed that this meant a "good" card for overclocking would be running default under or at 1000mv but it appears that this might not be the case. However I do suspect that cards running under 1000mv will run a little (or maybe a lot) cooler. According to Unwinder on Guru3D this factory set voltage thing is not unusual and has been going on since ATI 2900s.

My card doesn't seem to have much issue with running at 800+ on the GPU but my RAM doesn't like anything more than around 1950. Currently I've decided to leave my card at default simply because although I gain a few FPS it isn't enough to make a game which is slow at 2560x1600 fine at that res. In addition my air flow is a bit poor in my old Antec P160 and summer is coming.

Despite initially saying that I couldn't tell much difference in noise levels between my old 280 and the 480 the noise from the 480 IS louder when stressed. I still think it's ok and it isn't as noisy as the drobo when its fan is spinning fast nor the shuttle system under load. However it would be nice if the 480 was a bit quieter and I wish they'd used a bigger fan (like the one on the 280)!

EDIT: Please note that the Afterburner software defaults to 1000mv if you hit reset. I posted on Guru3D that this actually caused me an issue because I assumed my initial 1025mv was false and went with 1000mv instead (big crash!) I suggested that there was a warning and/or an offer by afterburner to take the "current" value as default but I suspect to no avail.

Just Cause 2 doesn't use PhysX.

It doesn't? It has the logo on starting?

Is this why I can't get physx to work on my hybrid 5850 + 9800GTX+ system?

In which case my overclocked 5850 plus overclock 9800GTX+ gives slightly better performance than the gtx480 at stock in Just Cause 2

Hey guys

I posted the first unboxing pics but must admit i've been to busy trying out ALL my games with the 480 to do any benchmarks!!

Thoughts so far:

Coming from a GTX 275 (8800 for physx) the 480 is DEFINITELY a worthwhile purchase. Just to clarify i use 1920x1080, vsync ON in all my games.

Noise/hardware - the thing looks great and am yet to notice it being loud, hell my case fans set to medium (which i usually have them for gaming anyway) are a similar volume. This was my biggest concern when i was looking to purchase but its so far been a non issue.

Drivers/image quality - the 197.41 for a first attempt fo the 470/480 seem to be pretty good. They do have a few problems like in GTA IV and EFLC you seem to get a lot of z-fighting and such but im hoping that will be worked out in a few revisions.

I have noticed a significantly sharper picture in all games compared to my GTX 275 which is good in general but does make games that dont support AA (like GTA IV) look pretty bad as edges are all razor sharp and coarse. Im hoping htis is also a driver quirk as i dont see why else this would be the case.

Just Cause 2 - Absolutely maxed out and plays great, id say 45-60 fps and just looks so good with the CUDA effects.

GTA & Episodes - Like i said i get problems with z-fighting and such things but a lot of people are suffereing from problems since the latest patch. Performance wise its great, benchmark reports im only using about 70 odd % of video memory when maxed out! The sharpness issue i mentioned is nullified by the fact that i have R*'s motionblur/blur/DoF effect on.

Stalker COP - Said to be very ATI biased it still performs great on the 480, about 35-50 fps maxed out DX11

Dirt 2 - absolutely flew on my GTX 275 and still the same but now with added DX11 goodness! Nailed down at 60 fps

Crysis & Warhead - FINALLY, very high settings at my native resolution and is smooth as anything.

Gothic 3 - Ok most of you wont care but the GTX 480 makes no improvement to the awful performance of this game lol

Metro 2033 - Good if not spectacular performance but then this was an absolute slide show at lower res on my GTX 275. I play with max settings DX11, tesselation etc and would say i get about 30-45 fps.

Bad Company 2 - Maxed with 32 CSAA and flys, multiplayer experiance has got way better thanks to this card.

Batman - Physx maxed it stays at 60fps and doesnt drop a beat.

Happy to run any detail benchmarks that people still havent had?

Ta

I think the noise issue must have basically been due to thrashing the card through various benchmarking programs and maybe some kind of scaremongering, really pleased to start reading genuine reports that the card is not as loud as we were lead to believe :)

I am currently playing a fair bit of BFBC2 as you can see by my time played in my sig :) I am using a maxcore 260 in my machine at the moment with settings on medium to boost a better FPS. Would be interesting to see what performance I can get from a GTX480 :)

Have you managed to do any temp tests ?????

Cheers

I really was hopping for metro 2033 to be able to run @60+fps on a gtx 480 :( (then i would have bought 2)

Guess i'll wait n see if ATI bring a capable card then i can get 2 :D

Why are people buying cards so 1 game can run at 60+ fps. And to be honest it's only an average game. Reviews seem to think so anyway. I just don't this Metro fascination. Wouldn't mind so much if the game was good.

I'm giving the 480's some thought.
Has anyone got them in SLI yet ?

There is no physx logo in just cause 2  because it does not use physx for physics.

Metro 2033 is soo pretty though :-) It does run well dont get me wrong just not completely smoothed maxed out. Its fine if you turn off AA.

@mrix: Is there any software i can use to test temps while playing?

Yeah BFBC2 is soo good, looks like you've been putting in quite a bit of time! I'm only a level 8 assault guy t the minute but trying to get better! How did you get that in your sig?

Hi you basically just add your player name at this site and it gives you the option to add various backgrounds or even your own background.
Then basically it offers you different types of code to use. http://bfbc2.statsverse.com/

As for the software for measuring temps I have no idea  but if anyone could recommend something :)

Cheers all
