***THE OFFICIAL GTX480/470 END USER REVIEW THREAD***

Been playing BFBC2 mostly since I received my 480. I play @ 1920x1200, 8xAA, 16xAF, HBAO ON. I get about 70-75 fps on average, and a minimum of about 62 fps.

Temps get to 83 max and fan to about 63%. At that speed, I can't hear the fan over and above my Domino's fan. EVEREST reports a GPU Utilisation of 99% most of the time while actually playing.

There are some anomalies however. I currently run the game in DX10 as DX11 gives much lower frame rates (down in the 40's at points). The soft shadows do look good in DX11 though. I also get longer map loading times with DX11 - map takes about 45 seconds to load whereas they load in about 15 seconds when running DX10.

I am not currently running 32xAA as this reduces the min fps to below 60. I tried turning on vsync from within the game, but it doesn't seem to work.

I am currently using the 197.41 drivers. Do the 197.45's fix any of the above problems?

Interesting that you're also getting the slow loading times in BC2 with DX11, like the ATI cards were until the 10.4 drivers appeared.

Yep. Thought it must be a game issue, but ATI have a fix for their customers, so must be driver related. Could be that the 197.45's fix it, but not tried those yet.

@CraigN

Could you improve the loading times on the old ATI drivers by dropping back to DX10? Or is that nVidia specific? Just interested as I'm surprised that both the red and green team had similar issues that are not game related.

in all honesty i never tried

i just put up with the loading times. Id moan about having a DX11 card and having to run @ DX 10 :P

Hi,

Any updated news on the Asus gtx 480? It says eta 23rd, however another site said 22nd this morning, now it has 9 of these in stock ready for dispatch today.

Phil.

On something buyer.com they have 8 asus 470's in stock ata great price of £290 as well :O I am so tempted but I think i will wait until next week and order a Gigabyte 480.

Found this on another site - very interesting thread on temp controls :)
Noise seems reduced too!
http://www.overclock.net/nvidia/715038-gtx-480-temps-overclocking-what-i.html

The guy had to underclock his memory to get his temps down which for me is not a good fix. There is another guy in there with a possible answer to this also. He says that fermi is bandwidth limited so when you underclock your memory the core is waiting a little longer so not working quite as hard leading to the lower temps. I am no expert but it does sound like this would be the case.

Apparently his case fans are louder than his 480 fan at 80%...

He obviously doesn't have quiet case fans. Here, anything over 50% can be heard when my system is in quiet mode (intake fan on lowest). with the intake on full (its an ultra kaze) it takes about 65% before the i can hear the 480.

Gonna give this a go anyway.

EDIT: Just tried this, can't see it made much difference. Will have to test some more.

EDIT: Has lowered temps a little bit, idle temps are a few degrees lower, kombuster maybe 2c

This card can clock so high, but it's too loud to cool it when going for the high clocks. Under water this will be a beast, That cool IT product is the way forward.

That was crazy, I saw them with 8 left and just happened to refrsh and it went to 7. I then spent 5 mins looking at reviews again to see if a 470 was worth it only to then see they were sold out. I'm sure some muppet probably bought the lot to sell on some auction site.

You're meant to have read the reviews weeks ago and made your mind up then so that you can click buy as soon as you see any in stock! Assuming you decided they're worth getting of course.

I know some one who bought 2 for their rig. Word spreads fast on the web and people snap things up fast.

Better luck next time. :)
