***THE OFFICIAL GTX480/470 END USER REVIEW THREAD***

re:

To be fair I think most gamers have their PC's on the desks like I do, so the fan noise would be more pronounced there, nice vid nonetheless.

Cant say I do and cant say I know anyone else that does.

I can understand that some people do but what % I have no idea.

Cheers

@coupe69, any chance you could run the streetfighter 4 benchmark, just seen below vid and was blown away by the FPS the single 480 was giving at max rez and 8xAA, just need someone to confirm that performance even if it is at a lower rez.

been trying some more stuff and tbh, there's bugger all difference really! Need a big aftermarket cooler or the omni to keep this thing quiet and cool

Glad it isn't just me! The only time I see any temp drops with the card is when the ambient temps are low AND/OR when I have the case side off which gives me a big difference. New case needed but can't decide on which one atm!

DragonRR, when I run furmark on GTX280s the max FPS goes way higher than 62fps, try disabling v sync in the nvdiia control panel.

Well I did have displacement mapping on. If it was vsync my max fps wouldn't be higher than the monitor refresh which is 60hz.

My Furmark 1.8.0 results WITHOUT displacement mapping 1280x1024 WINDOW mode:

Score: 6774
FPS MIN: 99
FPS MAX: 159
FPS AVG: 113

Omni will certainly keep it quiet, not much cooler though...

I too have my case under my desk. Can't say I know many people that have theirs on top unless is a SFF case. Mind you, I don't know many people who game on the pc.

Thanks for the video Coupe, although I personally find the fan to be noticable over 70% even when playing, but maybe I don't have my games as loud as you do! :D

To be fair Raven at stock speeds it is 82deg which is 11deg cooler, not too shabby. The Omni cooler is quite good considering it is a sealed system, no messing with topping up water levels or worrying about leaks! Noise is also significantly reduced. However, for £150 I would expect it to be gold plated!

I think most people who have sweet cable management and a side window and Cathode Lighting, will put their case on the desk, like yours truly.

Compared to dedicated water cooling, the results are disappointing and so is the price.

So reading all the thread about fan noise and heat surely the answer is just stick an after market cooler on this card? Why worry about the fan speed, just prop it up a bit with an add on?
For example...

As for the wattage... let the green party worry about the effect on the environment :D There's an election coming up, they can use the adverse effects of its power needs and its impact on the planet in its manifesto? :p

Not really - its subjective, the video camera gain will home in any any noise, "peak for peak" that creaky chair is louder;) If I was him I'd invest in a new bl00dy chair not a video card :)

Point taken, but I've spent all my money on a new video card now :p

LOL at 90% being "a little intrusive" :D

:D Just a "little" The fact of the matter is though, I don't think I've seen the fan get anywhere near 90% yet whilst gaming.

I'm not going to try and convince people it's the quietest of video cards, but I do think certain individuals both on this site and elsewhere on the interwebz are blowing it all out of proportion, hence my little experiment.

For a comparison, it's not as noisy under load as my 260s in SLi and it's not as noisy as my mates 295GTX, admitedly these are dual gpu solutions, but you're getting the same sort of performance if not a little more with the 480, depending on the application.

At idle they're very quiet, as are most video cards nowadays, in fact there's only 1.5dB difference between the 480 and 5870.

I would if I still had the game, got rid of it a while back now though, sorry matey :(

Cheers, I'm starting to warm to the 480 after extensive youtube viewing of 480 performance, the heat and power usage is not so good but it does perform very well when you look at the genuine performance figures like from youtube 480 owners who detail settings and actually show the performance. I can see why peps would opt for one, it's not all doom and gloom as some make it out.
