***The Official Guitar Thread***

I had a more depth look at videos from people doing the 6 day course - it seems a flash coat is applied and it’s not expected a beginner will complete the build (but will know how to find finish).
Tempted to get a set of templates/plans and build the body. I have a router and a bandsaw. i could sort out the carves and then have the final stages such as neck and finishing. The mrs seemed to think about the 2w course next year. I can always get some cheap body wood and experiment in the mean time.

Quite like the idea now of a steamed pearwood body, a flame/burled top with a maple neck and an ebony fretboard.. it is a rabbit hole of outrageous options!
I even found some volume knobs I actually like.

I have an amp to finish first!

Update on this.. making a guitar for my 50th..

1. Local exotic timber yard will plane wood to order.. so buy and stick seems plausible, after that it’s cutting and that is easier. Hard maple, ebony, mahogany laminate through neck, alder wings with a maple top and ebony fretboard.
2. I’ve settled on a Seymour Duncan Pegasus-7 and Sentient-7 pickups, with 10.5mm spacing fixed bridge (probably a gotoh 510), still thinking about the tuners but 18:1 sounds good.
3. 27” scale length (strat is 25.5”), this is for rhythm guitar so 26.6-27” is good. Think of another fret below open on a strat and that’s basically what this will be like.

I am amazed at the difference new strings make- everything is all twinkly.

I will probably not change them until next summer, going on past performance...

I think I have the same set of phosphor bronze earthwood strings on the art&lutherie. I should go and check it’s still ok in the attic..

That's 2.5m of hard maple, with purple heart on top and then a nice thick piece of African rosewood for the fretboard. I looked at african ebony (non-black grade) £220 for the same sized chunk!

I've just bought a smaller version of my Laney AH300 that I use on stage which is basically a PA amp with a 15" speaker and horn.
At one time I used to use two keyboards, guitar fed into a Line 6 Helix, an acoustic and a mandolin but I'm down to just keyboards and guitar now and the Laney AH150 is a lot lighter.
These amps are amazing and they also tilt back.

I bought the smaller amp 15 days ago, done a couple of gigs and amazed with it which confirmed I didn't need the larger one.
Yesterday I came across a bloke selling another Laney AH150 for £100 and I'm collecting on Thursday, I'll then put the AH300 up for sale.
I will use the spare one has a stage monitor because my 10" floor mounted monitor isn't powerful enough.

his right hand is playing the harmonics without needing to fret anything wi the left...the left hand is doing hammer ons and pulls offs on different strings than the harmonics, so the left and right hand are always playing different strings, I made a short vid last night showing...the hard bit is the hand independence thing since they're doing different things...

Ahhhhhhhhh, I did not clock when doing the harmonics, you're using the thumb to lightly pluck with the same hand. Just tried tried it myself and yikes that's hard just to get any semblance of quality ring. The left hand hammer on/off rings sounds awful too. Least I'm consistent (:

It is a right pain! Getting the accuracy and clean packing is tricky.

The opening to Usher Waltz is all false harmonics, before the piece veers off into complete bonkersness.

You can find tabs for this one- it's a fun piece to play and is very "metal" for a classical piece.

Maybe it's my knackered old man ears, but that sounds flawless to me!

It just sounds a little trebly.. 1:10 mark... could be I've got used to my more mellow A&L.

Anyways I ache.. first thing you do with the build a new guitar.. build it's case.. planing by hand is like going to the gym lol.
