***The Official Home Recording Studio Thread***

easyrider, how do you feel about Mixbus now since you can get fast and possibly better results using just the CLA plugins inside any DAW?

Mixbus has a sound of its own firstly...plus the mixer, channel compression, channel EQ plus easy mixbus routing is great.

Mixbus also makes me learn things about audio...

Learning from the sound achieved from the CLA plugins and doing it myself will be invaluable learning curve for me.

Plus ( it really does)

Mixbus Sounds Better

Other DAWs are designed by companies with experience in computer sound, but no pedigree in world-class recording facilities. The Mixbus DSP mixer is designed by Harrison specifically for its great-sounding EQ, filters, dynamics, and bus summing. If you find a music recording from the golden age of albums - the 70s and 80s - that has stood the test of time, it is likely that a Harrison console was used during the production. Mixbus invites you to produce recordings that will stand with the very best.

But yea, what easyrider said, use it, try and figure out what it does and recreate it for yourself. That's not to say don't use the plugin as intended it's just a good way of learning!

I'm still learning the EQ and compression on Mixbus channels just like using a real console. My goal is to get to the point were I can get the sound I want with MIXBUS Channel EQ, a Reverb Plug and a Compressor.

The CLA stuff being such a good deal is a learning tool for me...My OCD wont be satisfied until I can get that sound with my MIXBUS console, Eq and compression and Reverb. Because thats all CLA is using mostly in the plugs themselves.

Red - Channel EQ
Green- Sends
Yellow- Channel Compression
Grey- Master EQ
White- Tape Saturation

I really like the look of mixbus (and consoles in general) but it seems like so much screen real estate is used with all the nobs. It is really nice having a full channel strip by default on each channel though.

With a 21:9 superwide at 2k its a great...Actual screenshot of mine

and just flip between mixer and editor on my faderport..

Thanks Lowe. Yeah my hi-hat mic is a pencil condenser placed fairly far away from the snare. But yeah, it would make more sense to have the capsule face away from the snare.

I think you're right ShortWarning, that sidechaining to the backing track would make the song pump too much.

I'm almost finished a great remix I'll upload later for your comparison once I've sorted the bass drum. It's much more airy and '3D' as I'm using more overhead in the mix, much less reverb and have generally widened the panning.

I've now got a punchier sound from the kick using a fair bit of compression, but I'm having real trouble in Studio One getting it to cut through without serious visual clipping. It doesn't really sound like it's clipping, and the master fader isn't clipping, so I'm not sure if I should be that bothered. But the bass drum fader is set at unity and peaking in the red to almost max. Same with the meters in the EQ and compressor plugins. But bringing it down where it doesn't clip, it's buried in the mix. I know it's my EQing and compressor doing this. But that's the only way I seem to be able to achieve the sound I like. Hmm, maybe I could try bringing everything down and increase the master fader.

Don't be embarrassed, we've all done it! It's much harder when you're recording yourself

Absolutely, messing up and fixing stuff is part of the process and learning curve...celebrate your **** ups!

I’ve decided to sort some stuff out it has always been a PITA to record drums . Running over to the PC starting the Record and then messing up a take and getting up and starting over so I’ve made some changes to my studio...

First thing is this and an Audient ID22

I’ll post some pics when I’m finished :)

For the first time I've neared a complete mix and have decided to scrap it and start from scratch (everything to -inf, removal of all plugins). Previously I've hit brick walls and have just tweaked a lot.

It's frustrating, I want to be able to nail it first time every time and and it's a bit crushing when I have to do this. I guess that's what the professionals are for. :p

All part of the process...I've been recording drums for the last few days...and have not posted the sound yet as I'm not quite satisfied :p

It's quite a different sound from the CLA Drums mix. Quite crisp and makes my CLA mix sound muddy to me now. The CLA mix is fatter but softer, whereas this mix is brighter, more focused and more detailed. Snare has more of a crack and woody tone now and more presence.

Studio one artist works with VST3 then ? Did you buy the add On?

I just mixed using default Studio One Artist 3 plugins. Nope I didn't buy the add on and I don't know anything about VTS3. :p To be honest, it's so difficult recording here because of available time and neighbours that my home recording projects are going to be so rare, I can happily make do with what I have now without buying anything else. Sometime in the future things may change.

I meant VST3....Thought you used the CLA Drums plugin?

Ah yeah, I used the CLA Drums plugin, but with Reaper. I had recorded in Studio One but then I imported the stems into Reaper so I could use the CLA.

Cool...I've been playing with studio one...a bit more and the mix tool to check phase with my drums and room mics as been great....one of my room mics was out of phase and I was losing bottom end on the drums when I blended the room mic in...

I watched this video to learn more...

I soon got the bottom end back on my toms when I inverted the phase on the room mic

@Merlin5 well worth a watch...there is an auto feature in mixbus fir a his but I learnt a lot about my room mics with this video.

Thanks easyrider, I'm gonna watch that later. I didn't know how to check phase so this will help. I did however use the phase switch that's built into the CLA plugin. To be honest though, I wasn't able to tell
which way was right or wrong, both ways sounded fine to me. I made sure my overheads were equidistant from the snare and also the kick drum in a recorderman placement so I'm assuming phase would have been ok.

The CLA is driving me to learn more tbh...yeah all my close my mics were in phase and it was the lack of low end on the tom mic and the room mic that were cancelling out...the room mic was about 10ft away on a wall...

I fixed the other pzm last night so will try stereo rooms tonight

I'm intrigued by the inexpensive Lewitt 440 Pure. Check out the comparison to a U47 worth $$$$. Forward to 6mins or so onwards.

Yeah I've seen that...does sound great. Even though that guys voice does my head in.

I'm also looking at an Advanced Audio CM87se http://advancedaudio-europe.com/

They get really good reviews and studios in the US are buying them in to replace their vintage Neumanns...

https://advancedaudio.ca/

If only I could try one out...

The Stam Audio SA87 is meant to be better than the real thing...
http://stamaudio.com/sa87.html

There are options...but it's tricky cause I want to try one out!

The Neumann does interest me and I'd get it on the 0% finance along with a pair of AKG C414s

I'm not sure I'd consider 1 expensive mic unless I had a pretty decent recording environment. I.e a 10k mic will sound crap in a garage with no treatment.

With that being said, my main mic cost 1k (Slate VMS). To me, it sounds amazing in my environment even without processing. I'm constantly blown away while tracking. Put a little LA2 on it and it sounds amazing. It's even better when applying mic models. 1k is a hell a lot of money for me but it's not just 1 mic, it brings a lot of versatility and I use it on more or less everything (vocals, percussion, drum room, acoustic).

The only problem with it is that you can't print with processing (ie through a compressor or eq) as the mic emulations will no longer be faithful. It can be a problem with very dynamic vocalists. As I have an apollo I can use a compressor/eq when tracking without actually applying the processing which can help the vocalist but it doesn't help with the printed dynamics. I've only had a problem once but it's due to poor mic technique by the singer really.

When I compare it while tracking with my sm7 - I know I'll get amazing results with my sm7 but it takes a little more work.

Anyway, my 2c.

I've got my studio sounding good now.
