I've been wanting to get some more mics...
The Neumann U87ai is what I want but I can't pluck up the courage to click buy yet.
I'm not surprised you can't find the courage with it being over two grand new or £1.5K second hand. I bet it would sound amazing though.
I'm intrigued by the inexpensive Lewitt 440 Pure. Check out the comparison to a U47 worth $$$$. Forward to 6mins or so onwards.
I'm not sure I'd consider 1 expensive mic unless I had a pretty decent recording environment. I.e a 10k mic will sound crap in a garage with no treatment.
With that being said, my main mic cost 1k (Slate VMS). To me, it sounds amazing in my environment even without processing. I'm constantly blown away while tracking. Put a little LA2 on it and it sounds amazing. It's even better when applying mic models. 1k is a hell a lot of money for me but it's not just 1 mic, it brings a lot of versatility and I use it on more or less everything (vocals, percussion, drum room, acoustic).
The only problem with it is that you can't print with processing (ie through a compressor or eq) as the mic emulations will no longer be faithful. It can be a problem with very dynamic vocalists. As I have an apollo I can use a compressor/eq when tracking without actually applying the processing which can help the vocalist but it doesn't help with the printed dynamics. I've only had a problem once but it's due to poor mic technique by the singer really.
When I compare it while tracking with my sm7 - I know I'll get amazing results with my sm7 but it takes a little more work.
Anyway, my 2c.
I'm also looking at an Advanced Audio CM87se http://advancedaudio-europe.com/
The Stam Audio SA87 is meant to be better than the real thing...

I've got my studio sounding good now.
Just a heads up that izotope have a sale on at the moment. I picked up Netron Elements and Ozone Elements for $29 a piece RRP $129 each.

Offer runs out in 3 days.
These are cut down versions of basically the best EQ and mastering plugins out there and seem more than adequate for me. I currently use the native EQ in Ableton and master using LANDR online service to see what the final product might sound like. So this will be a good step up for me.
Nice. Thanks for that, claimed it (not sure I'll ever use it but it's free)!
I signed up to this thing called "Nail the mix". It's like a community for mixing hardcore/metal tracks. They give stems away each month for a mixing competition. My God, it's so much easier to mix things that have been professionally recorded! I'm learning a lot about how I should be recording things from this. Bring Me The Horizon - Doomed is this months track.
get the 1176 compressor aswell if you haven't got it. Its free instead of £99
https://www.musicradar.com/news/ultimate-mixdowns-computer-music-issue-254-is-out-nowIt's showing 99 for me?
I'm pretty well covered for 1176's between the UADs and the Waves one anyway.
Hey guys, I've been messing around with Magix Movie Edit Pro and put something together for a bit of fun. Do you know Led Zeppelins 'Fool in the Rain'? Well an isolated John Bonham drum track for that song was released a little while back. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lWnhz1ZcF74
I've done a mash up of that drum track to this drumless version of Toto's Rosanna. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XwWqsrMQyfE
This is what I came up. I had to slow Rosanna down to match the drum tempo and then manipulate bits of the song tempo where Bonham's tempo fluctuates. It's not perfect because Toto used a click and Bonham didn't. But I think it sounds pretty cool as his possible interpretation of that song.
