*** The official HTC One S thread ***

Just checked and my t-mobile contract doesn't end till next month so might aswell wait but still think the One S is my favorite atm because of the battery life/benchmarks/8mp camera :D

The S3 will probably be better at those 3 things, maybe not the battery (the X also has an 8MP camera which seems to be marginally better than the S).

Or just get the One X surely?

Or that.

But the difference between the S and X isn't that huge, both have their strengths and weaknesses, the one S has the better battery life, perceived and build quality (of course this is a matter of opinion), better audio, faster and smoother. The camera on both should be the same in theory, however, the X seems to take better photos than the S and the S appears to record better video content, no idea why that is though :p

Where as the X has the better screen, more internal storage and NFC on its side.

I think Samsung will keep the micro SD slot whilst having 32GB of internal storage, the better camera (12MP with a better sensor as well probably) especially for video recording and better battery life (than the X, not the S unless they have a huge battery in it :p).

The screens are personal preference, some prefer SAMOLED, some will prefer the IPS.

Only areas where the one X is guaranteed to be better than the S3 is software, build and perceived quality (unless Samsung decide to drop the glossy plastic look/feel this time round).

The only downsides to the One S for me is that u can't remove the battery & the lack of MicroSD :(

I've had my spica for 24months and had to replace the battery after 18months :(
Also I've had to pull the battery a few times on the spica when it has stopped responding

Other than that I think the One S would be ok for me.

I upgraded from a spica as well :o (i5700 model) and lets just say the difference is hugeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! :D

Also just in case you aren't aware, you also get 25GB of dropbox storage :)

Apparently to do a hard reset on the one series mobiles you have to hold the power button for 10 secs or something like that and it should work if you are in a bootloop or the mobile has frozen, no idea if that actually works though :p

You shouldn't encounter these issues though unless you root and flash a custom ROM, which IMO there is no need to do in the first place :p

The design and screen are going to be the two 'downsides' on the S3 for me, I much prefer the IPS LCD and it will most likely be SAMOLED+HD which I don't think will be better.

I'm really hoping they design it similarly to the Nexus as the amount of people who moan about that is just unreal. :p

I'm also fully expecting the One X to match the S for smoothness and speed when HTC sort the software out. There's no way you should see a difference in anything other than benchmarks.

S3? Just got a bit confusing lol, or do you mean One S? :p

No, I mean the One S. On the X there are some slight bits of stutter/animation lag in places and the S doesn't have that (so much, apparently). It's only something I notice because I'm extremely fussy, most people wouldn't.

It's going to be down to software optimisation rather than a lack of power though, as both have plenty. HTC have got a few updates and fixes they need to release so it will improve with those.

I love both screen types for their own reasons :D :p

haha indeed! :D It will probably be a mix of the GS 2 and GN.

Yup the hardware on these mobiles (any mobile in the last year tbh) is more than enough for quick lightning quick operation & smoothness etc. it just comes down to software/drivers in the end.

Ohhhh right, okay (Y)

Do you think the X battery is terrible compared to the S?

I'm just wondering if I should choose the S instead of the better battery life, but then I don't think I will lol, as I'll always be saying "I should have gone with the X for the better screen and processor" lol

I think I will stick with the X and just hope that the updates will improve battery life like you say :)

The battery life is pretty poor when compared to the S, I can easily get a min. 4 hours of on screen time at about 50% brightness with medium to heavy usage, the X seems to only get about 2 and a half, 3 at most from what I have seen so far (it should improve with an update apparently but I can't see it being much of an improvement) but that is to be expected considering the screen.

As for "better processor".........the S has the better processor, just because the X has more cores doesn't mean it is better :p

Have you held both of the phones? Do you know how big the One X is? It's quite different to hold than a GS2 / Sensation.

Yeah I held it in the O2 shop yesterday

Hmmmm ... I think I would still rather have a higher spec phone, like the HD screen, NFC etc, rather than better battery life, I'm sure that updates will improve it a bit and changing power settings / backlight settings will help too

When it comes to general usage, the One X should still at least last one day right? Just light usage, as if I was at work or college, so the a few text messages, checking emails, facebook, twitter and maybe a phone call or two??

Can you confirm this Robbo? How long does your One X battery last with the above sort of usage? (I willl post this in the One X thread so you can reply there instead if you want)

Yeah it comes down to personal preference in the end :)

The main advantages the X has over the S is NFC, more internal storage and the screen.

You should get a day out of the mobile with that usage providing you get good signal and don't set the screen to a ridiculous brightness :p (30-50% is perfectly fine for indoors or/and a dull day and 70+% for a bright sunny day)

Updates should improve it, but don't be expecting an additional 1-2 hours or greater for on screen time :p

And also connect to wifi when available instead of staying on the mobile network connection and if you don't need the internet, disable all wifi and mobile network connection completely :)

The One XL seems to be getting 4-5 hours 'screen on' time, that's with LTE too...

Impressive!

What sort of usage? e.g. brightness, internet browsing, wifi etc.

Guess the krait processor is the main thing then that makes the S battery life great then.

Yeah think I'm gonna go with the One X as like you say it is fine as long as you don't have stupid screen brightness and unnecessary apps running 24/7 etc.

I'm sure there must be apps (similar to ones you can get for BB) that automatically turn off wifi when it's not in use and things like that?

The One XL seems to be getting 4-5 hours 'screen on' time, that's with LTE too...

4-5 hours is a reasonable amount like Robbo said considering all the features of the phone

I will also set it so that the backlight goes out quite quickly after I'm done using it so that should help too

I think I'm gonna get the X, like I said, if I don't then I will always regret not getting it just for the battery :p

Just to let you know in advance, you don't need to kill apps now :p

Yup there are, it is also built into the phone stock software where it disables after 10 min of inactivity, however, you are better of doing this yourself as things will be connecting to the internet in the background every now and then e.g. weather to update, emails to "push" etc. etc. and so if the wifi keeps switching on and off, obviously that will use more power than just leaving it on.

This app automatically does things for you:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/...MsIm5ldC5kaW5nbGlzY2guYW5kcm9pZC50YXNrZXJtIl0.

But it only takes a matter of seconds to do this stuff yourself :p and again that will just use resources running in the background.

Also just in case you aren't aware :p

The One XL is not the same as the X, the one XL has pretty much the same internals as the S but in the body of the X with the screen of the X and the same battery as the X.

So it appears that the main difference in battery life could be largely down to the krait processor that is used in the XL and S as it is more power efficient than the quad.

And lastly you can set the screen to turn off after a certain time but you can do this yourself once you are done using the mobile by just hitting the lock/power button and the screen will turn off immediately whilst being locked as well :p

EDIT:

Also, don't use automatic screen brightness, it makes the battery life worse!

And switchpro is a great app/widget.

Thanks for all these tips and links etc :)

I was not actually aware that a One XL exists, I thought it was just sarge joking as the One X is a big phone lol

I never clicked 'show all products' on the HTC website so didn't see it, ooops

I just looked at it but it doesn't have NFC, HD screen, or 1080p HD video recording so I think I will still stick with the One X, thanks for making me aware that it exists though as I genuinely didn't know lol

EDIT: I assume you are talking about the Sensation XL?

I can get roughly 3 hours of screen on time in a 48 hour period. After that, the battery is flat. I think that's fairly reasonable, not awesome, but good. I'd say my average usage is similar to yours.

The One S is a great phone, but since the iPhone 4 was released I'd been waiting for a giant version of that fantastic screen and the One X has it. I think that even after the Galaxy S III release, I'll still be on the One X due to that.

Famous last words though, I'm a bit weak at the knees when it comes to resisting buying a new phone (:p). No doubt the camera will be better, but I don't take many pictures so I should try and avoid getting it.

I love the HDR effect on these phones too, it makes outdoor pictures look absolutely awesome.

Lol :D

I am talking about the One XL :p :D

http://www.gsmarena.com/htc_one_xl-4572.php

It pretty much combines the best of the X and S, however, I am not sure when it is coming out here or if it is even being released here.......
