*** The official HTC One S thread ***

To be honest I wouldn't be fussed at all about the speed of OTA rollout if HTC would just make generic update ROMs available on their website - I can understand the need for a gradual rollout to prevent swamping a network, but surely allowing users to download the ROM themselves would only help the situation?

They use to be the best in the desire range days. The sensation got ICS before the GS 2, iirc kona said by a month. They just keep going down hill now :( When they released the one series, I actually thought that would be their chance to get back to the top, but as usual they have just ****ed up in sooooo many areas, I just don't get how these companies don't see/get what the customers want, why is it so hard to understand  :o

Yeah Samsung have definitely improved, although they are still pretty poor for all their other phones apart from the flagship devices i.e. GS 3, note II, GS 2 and note I, the Gs 1 days were pretty poor and definitely put me of their future devices (especially after having used the galaxy spica, which was a very capable smartphone but let down by Samsung badly and like many of their other phones back then it was dead as soon as it was on the market, the spica was a very popular handset in Europe too so no reason why they couldn't have kept supporting it) But with the quick and very nice updates for the GS 3 and note II recently, they have definitely proved themselves in the update/support field and do seem to be the best now.

TBF though, apart from the GS 3 normal and LTE model, note II, HTC one X+, motorola razr devices and some of the one X devices, no other phones have the jellybean update officially afaik and it does look like HTC have put a lot of work into the new sense version, it is just the fact that they have been lying since October about the update and being able to release a phone, which is exactly the same apart from storage with JB and they don't bother with the update for the S, likewise for the X and X+, granted it was the same for the GS 3 LTE model and the normal GS 3, but it took 3-4 weeks for the update to happen where as it is much longer for the X+/X and SE/S now and I just know that the S will not see this update till January at the very earliest going by all the stuff that the HTC chat team are saying, the majority of UK X devices still haven't received the update (with the last update, iirc it was a 4-5 week gap between the X and S UK devices) etc.

Still very tempted by the nexus 4 purely for the support.

I agree with you especially when they released the "One" series I thought that HTC had got their game together and were going to make strides in the Android industry but that failed miserably.

They should read the forums as a good indicator as to where as a company they are going wrong and how they can improve on their own products.

Although Samsung have improved I am getting worried with the sudden death syndrome and Exynos security loophole issue which has left me feeling very uncomfortable about the whole thing. I keep saying this, if it was Apple everyone would be jumping on them and screaming blue murder but for some reason the press haven't picked up this, or Samsung are paying them to keep quiet.

I chucked to myself when HTC said that the reason that the UK hasn't got JB for the HOX yet because it's being released in alphabetical order, I thought that is such a diabolical reason to delay JB. When will these companies stop lying and give a solid and straight answer in regards to the delay?

There aren't many phones with JB experience and it's with great reluctance that I have now turned towards the Nexus 4 and have ordered one from CPW this afternoon and that's for the reason you cited....purely for the support.

Lol also chuckled at that when I read about it :D

It is funny also because it is technically wrong (I think) as the updates are rolled out depending on the CID number of your device, with Samsung etc. you don't have to worry about what CID number you have etc. Probably got that answer from some on line chat guy, they don't have a clue what goes on, just say whatever they are told to from the higher up people, always state different things, that is another problem with HTC, there seems to be no communication in their company at all.....

It sounds better to the average joes than the real reason :p, "marketing purposes, we want our new devices to have 1 more advantage over our older devices so more people will move to the newer devices, which means we make more money"

Nice, be sure to let me know what you think of it overall, especially the screen, and camera overall :) Just wish it had a SAMOLED screen as I would really miss the blacks, saturated colours, viewing angles etc. :(

It was really a lame arsed excuse Mate

You're right the updates are rolled via the CID number not by region which is pathetic on HTC's behalf if the latter was true.

HTC seem to roll out new devices just for the hell of it, so much for reducing the number of devices and keeping them under the one umbrella moniker. What's the bet that if and when the HTC Butterfly is released that 6 months down the line there will be a HTC Butterfly+ ?

They really need to concentrate on the devices that they have released and ensure those who have invested in their phones are rewarded with timely updates and not fed bullsh!t

At this rate I think HTC are competing with Sony with regards to releasing phones under each letter of the alphabet! The market's going to get saturated with all these phones and the poor consumer who isn't as hot on phones unlike the people who frequent this forum are going to get confused!

I feel sorry for them :(

I'll let you know my thoughts on the Nexus 4 Mate, I'm worried about the LCD screen as I've heard all sorts about it and I'm more of an SAMOLED Man myself.

The N4 was bought out of desperation because of the S3 situation....

There most definitely will be a BF + or whatever within 5 months, typical HTC strategy now

They said that they won't do that with the butterfly, however, they said that about the one series, yet they did the exact same but much worse! 6 models of the S.....

According to Tong, HTC will also be changing its marketing strategy in two key ways. The first involves having less flagship reboots (like the One X+), letting their high end models stay on the market longer.

Thanks, look forward to hearing what you think :)

Exactly! I take whatever HTC with a pinch of salt!

If I could've I would have bought a HTC One XL (32Gb) over the N4 but HTC's update strategy pushed me away from them to the N4, doesn't that in itself speak volumes??

Will let you know as soon as I get phone Mate :)

HTC one X UK unbranded devices have just started getting the JB update, CID number: HTC_001

They received a small update before, iirc 27MB and then got the JB one after.

So going by the last update for the UK S and X devices (4.0.4 and sense 4.1), that means in 5-6 weeks time the unbranded UK one S devices will get the update..... yay! Looks like my original guess as to when we would get the update will be right after all, January at the very earliest (same time as the GS 2 and note 1 supposedly)

Well done HTC, you have lost yourself a loyal customer until you get your act together, could have delivered this months ago.

Too little, too late eh Nexus? You were indeed a loyal customer who really loved your HOS and I'm not surprised because it's an excellent phone.

Shame HTC blew it with their updates..there's one way to look at it though at least HTC aren't as bad as Sony!

Indeed stoosh!

Lol true, I actually felt sorry for people that own a Sony device when reading this:

http://www.gsmarena.com/sony_gives_an_update_on_the_jelly_bean_update_schedule-news-5227.php

If I owned a Sony device, it would be going straight into the trash! Not even worthy of selling lol.

Also had to laugh, I read that some htc guy said the rollout for the s wouldn't begin till every unbranded and branded one x had received the update, what is the point of that....

Is anyone as bad as Sony for updates :D

No there isn't! Sony could make a phone that transformed into a Buggati Veyron and I still wouldn't even buy it! :D

I know Mate, I was laughing to myself when I read about Sony's update schedule. It was as if they were proud that their flagship devices would be getting JB in Feb/Mar! C'mon Sony get a grip!

I feel sorry for anyone who has a Sony phone....I'd throw mine into the trash too if I owned one!

What on earth are HTC playing at? Surely their servers can handle the JB rollout for the HOS? I guess they haven't even started developing it hence buying time until every HOX and HOX+ has the update.

Shame on them...and they wonder why they've lost market share and fallen behind Samsung. :o

They most certainly could, although they use that as an excuse for the slow rollout as well, servers can't handle the load, well for starters I doubt many people still have their one X, S etc. after all the problems and crap support so it shouldn't be an issue any more....

They have had it ready for like the last 2 months now :p The one SE (only available in Taiwan), which is the exact same as the normal S, except 64GB internal storage and is white instead, ships with JB/sense V4+, hence my frustration :p XDA guys cracked the encryption and finally got it ported to the normal S a week or two ago.

Sony have just moved from Sweden to Japan and from London to Sweden a few months before, poor sods. They'll be slacking behind for a another year or two.

Right now I wouldn't buy anything other than a Google Nexus, iPhone, Microsoft phone (hurry up and buy Nokia MS) or the upcoming Amazon phone. :D

debating if i should unlock the bootloader and install a custom rom

anyone else done this on the one s?

can you get it back to stock later if i need too

i have installed cutom roms on all my other android devices

Looking good!

Hmm, now do I decide to buy them..... :p

Although don't we have a built in sense effect that gives us the fish eye appearance? And iirc we can adjust the amount/depth of the effect too.

I've got to praise HTC UK support. My sister has the One S which had the micro oxidation failure, finally managed her to send it in, she opened a request on Saturday, phone was collected on Tuesday and returned this morning with a new coating and they even threw in a screen protector. That's a very quick turn around we were not expecting it back until after Christmas. Well done HTC. :D

Wow, another quick turnaround, well done HTC! At least it seems like they have improved their repair/service centre, now they just need to work on their update/software support! :p
