*** The official HTC One S thread ***

Been spending last hour or so setting mine back up so here are my impressions quickly:

- definitely smoother throughout especially in the menus and sense stuff, it does feel more snappy too without a doubt
- haven't noticed any difference in wifi performance or cell reception yet
- only a couple of extra bloat stuff added, however, you can't disable some of the stuff that you could originally like HTC sense stock stuff, notes and task apps but as sarge pointed out can at least disable their location stuff
- new keyboard sucks so back to swiftkey 3
- overall the UI is better for sense stuff apart from the battery section and the power saver notification is annoying
- we can now add widgets from the app drawer using nova/apex without having to root
- not used camera yet so can't judge quality improvements if any
- can't judge battery life cause someone at HTC thought it would be a good idea to remove screen on time...........

You haven't quite got full control of themes for the message app, only preset sense themes so no black background :(

sense browser is even better now, really like what they have done with the quick controls and I don't see any reason to use quick ics etc. for now.........

Just had a quick go on google now, don't need it and will just drain battery so it is disabled! :p

Also don't like what they have done with the default text size for the SMS app, too big now, you can resize it but it resets once you exit and go back into the thread, time to look for a SMS replacement app *sigh* as I feel like a old man with text that size :p

Going to have a look later for a micro USB OTG cable so I can plug some flash drives in!

Also android OS is using a lot more battery than what it should so I am guessing battery life won't be as good, iirc wasn't this a problem with 4.1.1 and fixed in 4.1.2? Hope HTC gets that update out soon!

Noticing wee micro lags every now and then too with nova, but not much of an issue as on the whole the phone is running very smooth.

I presume that this OTG cable should work just fine?

EDIT:

Auto brightness seems to work much better now, doesn't go over the top brightness in every light condition so far.....

EDIT:

Also don't like what they have done with the default text size for the SMS app, too big now, you can resize it but it resets once you exit and go back into the thread, time to look for a SMS replacement app *sigh* as I feel like a old man with text that size :p

Hmm that is weird!

I did try pinch to zoom before and it still reset to the normal/default size when I exited it and went back in, now when I try it again, it doesn't, maybe a reboot or the factory reset that I did fixed the problem

EDIT:

Only seen your post now fluttershy, try a different network SIM card in your phone, if it doesn't work then you are network locked

Also dial this number:

*#*#2432546#*#*

And then search for updates.

I was having problems with Asphalt 7 since the last update, i have to say that with JB ive just tried it and ots unbelievably snappy now. Super fast through menus and no slowdown when it gets busy mid race. Totally awesome!

Hmm, might have to reinstall the spiderman game to see if it is any smoother then!

Have you noticed any battery drain scam (and sarge etc.)?

My battery does seem to be draining a bit quicker now :( Although still early days........

BTW quick ics browser is crap now, the auto reflow text doesn't work that well and it seems a bit laggy too. Sense browser is super smooth and quick.

EDIT:

This is a good app for battery usage, on screen time etc.!

I can't really comment on battery usage as I seem to have spent most of today in front of the telly and messing around on my phone. Hence its now plugged in and charging :p

I do really like the HTC browser now I realised there are secondary controls when you hover over the main row, doh! But I'd love to change the order of the quick controls, the main 'tabs' are completely in the wrong order and should be flipped upside down argh! Why would you put settings at the top!?

That Gsam battery app looks good but it appears to run in the background? Certainly sits in the task bar right?

Yeah that hover thing is one of the new features in JB/sense :) Love it too!

I think it does run in the background, not 100% sure yet, only had a quick look at it, you can disable the stuff that sits in the notification bar and tray if you want though.

I havent properly looked but it doesnt seem like it :(

Im wondering if its actually worth *gasp* trying it out? All the screen brightness stuff i have quick controls for (widgetsoid) but im thinking surely underclocking the cpu, for wxample could only help?

Whats the consensus on this then guys,

I stopped half way through update download yesterday because I wasn't sure whether its worth it or not with the extra bloat.

Are any settings lost btw? or messages?

Disadvantages I have noticed so far are:

- gallery you have one extra click to get into your album
- keyboard is worse (but then I always use swiftkey 3 as it is the best keyboard there is)
- battery draining quicker (still gets me through the day)
- with nova (latest beta), the homescreen and app drawer are a wee bit laggy, like micro stutter, rest of the phone for menus etc. is super smooth and quick though, using 0.5x animation times in the developer options
- not being able to remove the power saver notification
- battery usage chart isn't as good and no on screen time
- only 2 extra bloat apps have been added from what I can see, however, you can't disable some of the stuff you could originally i.e. sense note and tasks etc. and if you disabled it before the update you won't be able to enable it again lol...... I did a factory reset so anything I can't disable, I have just hidden them with nova, although you can at least disable their location stuff....

Advantages:

- USB OTG so can plug in flash drives, mouse etc.
- google now and the improved search (was using it yesterday, it is pretty cool, but is a gimmick like siri, s-voice etc. imo)
- better notifications
- snappier and smoother throughout
- browser is even better with the tweak to the quick thumb controls (not noticed much difference in speed)
- overall the UI is better throughout especially the camera app, still haven't properly used the camera yet so not sure if any improvement in quality but there is suppose to be
- playstation mobile app now works and you can get lemmings for free :p

And no, messages aren't lost etc. although iirc a few of my settings reset, can't really exactly remember as I did a factory reset after 30 minutes or so :p

Personally I wouldn't bother. One step forward (Google Now), two steps back (everything else)

Most 'features' are 'baked in' now so you can't disable them, SenseUI is back with a bang! (the promise of light surface changes from Android 4 onwards didn't last long eh :D)

Im wondering if its actually worth *gasp* trying it out? All the screen brightness stuff i have quick controls for (widgetsoid) but im thinking surely underclocking the cpu, for wxample could only help?

You'll use more battery life turning it on. (not joking... the CPU has fully dynamic power profiles and rarely goes above 1Ghz> Displaying that large white icon will use more leccy than the rest would save)
This feature is directed at people who leave the screen brightness on at 100% all the time, nothing more. It's poor, very poor.

Fair enough sarge. I tried it briefly but once I realised it put the dirty great icon on the top left, I turned it off immediately :p

I'm liking the 'dim on page loading' on the HTC browser, but again I'm wondering if it will actually save battery or not!

Oh, does anyone else use a pin lock on their phone? I hate the new keyboard /number layout argh!
