*** The official HTC One S thread ***

The one with a 2 star average review? :o

Just checked and yup 5 reviews, average rating of 2! :D

And it is actually the 4th result, thought it was the first :o

As I said in my mini review, I wasn't expecting good things either, but it turned out to be pretty good in the end

- My screen protectors weren't dirty, if they are dirty then get a bit of tape and stick it onto the protector were the dust is etc. to remove it

- You don't really need a "special" card, cleaner etc. for preparation and application of the screen protector :p Your finger nails or a credit card and any soft cloth etc. will do the job just as well :p

- Mine was a perfect fit pretty much

Important things to do, is to apply it after someone has had a hot shower in the en-suite and to make sure the screen is nice and clean before application.

Only disadvantage is that if your fingers are slightly grubby/sticky/sweaty, the marks will show up easily and won't get away by themselves unless you wipe the screen.

Btw when i tried launchers out i also lost my highscores, is that meant to happen?

Nope that shouldn't happen at all, the launcher has nothing to do with the games, all have their own files/folders for config files etc.

I started of with a couple of those HTC screen protectors. First one I applied badly having to lift it a couple of times through miss aligning and ended up with dust trapped under. Binned it and applied the 2nd. This went a lot better and in honesty was very good. Lost that when I exchanged my One S. Since then the Martin Fields turned up and although OK were no better than the HTC. If anything there is a slight lifting at either side as the MF looked a fraction too wide. Between the 2 then the HTC would get my nod as it's quite a bit cheaper and does fit well. Take care to line it up first time.

I'm not overly worried about the 'chipping' issue. Of more concern is the poor mobile reception. Typically I dispatched my phone back to HTC and then read later in the day that Three UK were releasing the software update the same day  May have solved my issue though bad to tell from reports on t'interenet.

What's a good game for the One S - for when I get my phone back.

My One S just switched off in the middle of a call!

If the 1.78 update doesn't sort it then it'll have to go in for repair methinks, although support did tell me if I take my phone into my nearest TMobile store then they can run some diagnostics on the phone to see if there is something wrong with it. If there is, they'll send it off for repair/replacement. Handy to know...think I'll do that. At least I'll know for sure if it's hardware or software then.

For those of you who have a sim free unbranded One S there's a software update available in the UK
Its 57meg in size. Gonna download it when I get home

Just checked and got the update as well. All installed now (took a while with a few reboots and the orange notification LED light turned on a few times, that had me worried for a bit :p :o)

Haven't noticed any improvements so far..........signal strength and speeds are still the same for me.

@Richy

Only games that are worthwhile IMO is angry birds (gets a bit boring after about 5 minutes though), BMX boy, N64 and genesis ROM emulators and game dev story (very addictive).

EDIT:

Just noticed the evil 3 dot menu button on the bottom is gone now for the youtube app! :D But still there for the other apps :(

EDIT 2:

Is there a change log of the changes for this update?

@Nexus18 I've been searching for a changelog but can't find anything. Apparently the update supposed to fix wifi issues that apparently drain the battery and other minor fixes.

I haven't experienced any battery drain whilst using Wifi so far the One S has been a joy to use.

I downloaded the update but haven't seen any improvements the phone was quick prior to the update anyway!

Just noticed that the Agenda calendar widget works now and doesn't crash Sense.

Ah ok, hopefully will get one soon then :)

Can't say I have noticed any battery drain with wifi on either. I have wifi on pretty much 24/7, maybe will see even better battery life then :p :D Charging mine up now.

WIFI related stuff seems to be much quicker now and loading web pages is even quicker as well! Feels like I am using my desktop PC for browsing now :p

Just done some speed tests and I never got near these dll speeds before the update, not even my PC gets over 29MB dll, 2.9MB ul and the wireless adapter that I have is pretty good (think it is related to the virgin superhub, but don't get why my mobile is getting better speeds and my PC isn't and my brothers PC gets exactly the same speeds as my PC.......)

I've received a copy of some communications between a member on the xda forums who has had the chipping problem and HTC:

----

14/5 Last email to let them know that my 3d handset is now on its way to the retailer for a refund as they do not seem to accept that the MAO is vulnerable not just from falls and knocks, but from everyday use, much more than a simple plastic phone, and also letting them know of my decision to leave HTC as a valued customer for more than 10 years due to HTCs responses

HTC said:
Dear VP,

Thank you for your reply.

This is considered cosmetic damage, and is not covered by warranty as it is user damage, I apologise but there is nothing more that can be done about this. I am able to arrange a chargeable comsetic repair for you but this will not be repaired in warranty.

Sincerely,
Luke

14/5 I replied telling them that HTC themselves had advertised the phone as NOT needing a case!

HTC said:
Dear VP,

Thank you for your reply.
I am certain that at no point we have advertised that this device does not require a case. Can you please provide me with the link you read this on.

I am afraid that this is our policy regarding wear and tear, there is nothing more that I can personally do for you regarding this issue.

I apologise I am unable to help you resolve this.
Luke

Just logged in to HTC to make they had received my phone Tuesday and it's logged as under repair today and has moved to 'dispatched' too. I hope they've not just loaded the latest software on it and sent it on its way. I've not read that anyone has found mobile network reception has improved with the new update?

Not a fan of Angry Birds as it get repetitive very quickly.

3 dot menu is a right mix up. Hopefully as apps get developed for ICS then we can lose the waste of space 3 dot 'settings' menu at bottom of screen. As has been said a lot of apps have a 3 dot menu top and bottom of screen

I've not come across a changelog yet?

They probably have done just that :p

Don't know about signal strength but I have read quite a few comments that the data connection no longer switches constantly.

At first I thought it was just the apps that were the problem and that developers had to change/update them but after this update and the 3 dots at the bottom being removed from the youtube app, I think it is a problem with sense/HTC so HTC are the only ones that can remove it :( unless you root and flash a tweak so that the 3 dots menu gets removed and when holding home button down then the menu is brought up.

I've not come across a changelog yet?

I still can't find anything either yet :(

Most definately the phone is quicker since the update not that it was slow in the first place anyway. I've noticed that the phone holds the signal much better as well both in GSM and 3G mode too...web browsing is incredibly fast as Nexus18 mentions above.

The One S is an awesome phone I'm really pleased with it.

Haven't had any problems with restarts/crashes/freezes for quite a while now even before the update *touch wood*
