*** The official HTC One S thread ***

Regarding battery life since last update.

About the same usage as previous tests; few texts, few phone calls, a lot of web browsing, installing/uninstalling apps, about 10-15 min of youtube videos, about 10-15 photos taken, about 10-15 min of games, about 15 minutes of TV catchup, a lot of speed tests (both wifi and 3G/H, turning into mrk now! :o :p), mostly wifi connection and H/3G connection for a bit, snowstorm syncing every 2 hours (refreshed about 6 times manually throughout the day as well) and sense weather refreshing every 12 hours, general messing around in apps etc. and automatic brightness this time.

I love the automatic brightness but it is pretty **** :p, always makes the screen far brighter than what it really needs to be and seems to adjust even when the lighting condition hasn't changed at all :p If I had just stuck to 40% brightness the entire time for that test, I would have got about another 20-30 minutes for on screen time probably.

EDIT:

@Johno please?

Nice deal there :)

Just browsing xda "post your camera shots" and seen this photo that some guy took with his S, looks stunning

They probably have done just that :p

Well you know what, you're right  Done the software update and sent it back.

So, I reset my phone prior to sending. They have removed and slung the Martin Fields screen protector. Best of all they sent back in a box about 8x5x2 ..... loose inside  They emphasize packing the phone well which I did by wrapping in bubble wrap and placing in a box. They merely chuck it in a box and send it on it's way free to rattle about to its heart content. Now there is a small chip on the coating on the top edge which wasn't there before. All this to do something I could have done myself. Is mobile reception any better? Slightly in that I now have 2 bars in our house and sometimes three where I used to have 1 or none at all. Not actually lost connection though early days. Hopefully things will stay as they are.

Pleased to get it back. Been using my older Moto defy+. What a POS it really is. Only rebooted 5 times today - 3 times I was mid call. Does have strong mobile network reception though  I'll see how the One S goes out and about tomorrow.

Google Play Shop restores all apps but settings and sign-ins all has to be done again. One thing, after the Defy it does feel very brisk. I'm surprised the One S thread here is slow as it really is a cracking phone. Early days perhaps.

Wow  Shocking that! I personally would complain to them about that.

At least the signal seems to be improved somewhat now though, lets hope it stays like that :)

Yeah it really is a shame that the device isn't more popular not just here but at XDA, android forums (virtually dead over there) etc. :( It is largely down to the lack of storage and then to top it all of the chipping issues, which is putting a lot of people off and mainly because many people (average joes mostly :p) will probably be going for the X purely because it's "quad core" :p

The screen too, I imagine a lot of people on XDA and Android forums will consider no 720p to be a deal breaker ultimately?

And that :p, as you said though more so the people at XDA etc. but it doesn't seem to be as much of a deal breaker as the storage and chipping issues, many people at XDA have returned the mobile solely due to the chipping issues and gone for the X instead or another alternative :(

EDIT:

Not just because it isn't 720P but also cause it is based on pentile matrix.

I could live with a pentile screen and chipping but the lack of storage is a killer.

No kidding... Only 2 microarchitecture advances, a die shrink and an extra core between then :D
Mind you, I had my defy up to 1.3GHz on CM and it was very nippy indeed. Cracking little phone that, you've got a duff one if it keeps rebooting (what are you running, CyanogenMod 7.2 or 9?)

It did cross my mind at one time to return it and go for the One X but in honesty there seemed to be more probs with it? Storage of around 10gigs is a little on the low side these days. Easy enough to restrict music to what you actually listen too rather than loading everything. I'm currently not finding it a problem. Got an email today from a retailer announcing Moto Razr Maxx in stock tomorrow - after the last couple of days with the Defy+ that particular email has been ignored.

Yeah it crossed my mind aswell but at the end of the day i don't think i would be happy with the one X it just didn't sit right in my hand. That rather small size difference is noticeable. One X seems to have its fair share of problems anyway...

Maybe it's because i came from such a pos previous phone but there is nothing more i want from the One S, it's perfect for me bar the chipping. On the subject of chipping, this one has no marks around the USB at all which is odd. Just the top edge

e: That is a cracking photo above

Well I've had two duff ones. Seem to only have bad luck with phones. Still on stock by the way as never got past the rebooting. I was looking into 7.2 to see if it would cure the rebooting issue but the One S came along so no progress was made. When the Defy+ was good, it was very good but when it was bad it was a PITA. It'd go days without issue then I would have days like today. Yes, you would expect the One S to be faster.

As to storage well you either live with it and it's not a problem or look elsewhere. Does seem daft these days though.

I couldn't say whether there are more problems with the X or not, but there are more problems than you'd generally expect.

However, some of them are good, mine for example is perfect, try as I might to find a fault with it after reading all of the issues people have had! :p

We'll I replied to my ticket to complain about that the phone wasn't a lot better, that I could have loaded the latest software myself and the return packaging was less than acceptable. The annoying part is the phone was returned with a chip off the coating which may have happened rattling about in the box? What pee'd me off was their instructions for returning a phone to them:

"Package the device as you would like to receive it. In a good strong box with plenty of padding."

Read - find a box and chuck it in

Strangely, they have not got back to me

Since the software update it does seem a little better. At home signal reception is still poor on the HOS when it shouldn't be though marginally better. On the up side it doesn't seem to lose signal as much and to be honest I don't think I've pulled the phone out my pocket and found it disconnected. According to battery stats it does go without signal a little - 10% today though have been working in and out an old building that does have poor signal reception anyway.

Did look at a One X at the weekend. Overall it's not that much bigger than the One S. Dunno what to do as kind of got used to the great battery life of the One S :D

Not much to say in here lately huh? :p

Mine hasn't chipped any worse so far. Seems so long as i put the phone in my pocket bottom end first it protects the sharp top edge somewhat.
Need to get out and play with the camera some more but haven't really been anywhere nice.

Snagged this just before it ran out yesterday pretty happy.

Also was watching a film and some tv shows on it last night for a bit over 3 hours which took it down to ~35% from full charge

It has been a bit quiet. Mine's been going OK really. I grumbled on when I got it back but not noticed much signal loss since the software update. Other than that battery life is great. I don't seem to use more than 50% of the battery in any single day, with light use a whole lot less. Going to root mine at some point. Other than that nothing to report.

two people in my works department also had One X's and replaced them with the One S. Same reason is that it was too big.

Must be happening quite a lot.

I doubt it's all that common really, otherwise Samsung are in for a world of trouble with just one device of this size.

Shall I tell Samsung or will you :D

I doubt it too? Put the two phones side by side or the S on top of the X and there really is little in it? Granted the X takes up more room on the front with it's larger screen but personally can't think the difference is enough?

I got fed up with the Case Mate Defender case and ordered an Otterbox Commuter for my One S. Ordered direct from them in the US and with delivery made it a little expensive but arrived yesterday and quite pleased with it. Fits very well and looks (IMO) a lot better. Probs with the Defender - the rubber outer case made it difficult to slide phone in and out of trouser pocket, more so with hot humid weather we've just had. Also the inner lining of the Defender seemed like a magnet to dust? Both are similar in dimensions and bulk the phone a little. Otterbox has little flaps over usb and phono socket which is a plus to me. Otterbox does have little cut outs for bottom and top mike holes too where defender covered bottom mike. Not that it seemed an issue as you could make your own hole and even covered seemed to make little difference. Otterbox Commuter for One S not available in UK yet - that I have found though did see one firm give an ETA of 15th June. Otterbox was dispatched Thursday from the US and was here for 9am Monday morning which I classed as pretty speedy. Overall I like a lot better :)
