*** The official HTC One S thread ***

My Wifi signal is still strong after 1.78.401.2.

Have you removed the sim cover since then? Makes a huge difference if it's not on correctly. If that's not the issue then maybe a full reset could improve things?

i've rooted so cant install OTA update. Anyone know of a htc one s sense rom thats updated? I really want stock (i like htc sense)

Have a look at TrickDroid 4.3 on XDA. It's based on the latest software update and can be as stock as you like. Been using it myself for a few weeks with no issues.

My wifi remained the same after the software update with no signal reception issues. Phone was updated before I rooted and then flashed TrickDroid.

Mobile network reception is still poor at times with my phone both after the update and after flashing TrickDroid rom which I would have expected with the latter anyway? As updates become available then I presume they will be incorporated into the ROM.

At 30cm distance - pentile on the HOS is pretty much un-noticeable for me. But when I have it closer; 10-15cm, when browsing in portrait, the Pentile effect is noticeable on stuff like text, images/widgets etc.

Hell, at 10-15cm I can't focus on the screen anyway  At 30cm all is fine. Now I know why I can't see the pentile effect

Took some nice camera shots this morning while the sun was out in the Garden - frantically going in and out swapping phones to take comparison shots between the HOS and S2 - I gripped the phones so hard so they didn't fall - boy would I have been distraught if they did fall - no cases. Will post them up later tonight. Again the camera software on the HOS is excellent - really shows up the lower shutter speed and lack of extra features on the S2.

I'm getting flickers in the top left hand quarter of my screen - only on Apex launcher desktop - never happened in any other app. Still, not a good sign.

Signal has been decent on TalkMobile - In London I'm getting upto 6.5dl/1.5ul Mbps. Pretty impressed with that compared to my T-Mob signal - 3.75/0.5.

The design has really grown on me - a very smart looking phone - from the nicely drilled earpieces to the not overly lit capacitive buttons (like the O2X), hidden LED notification (no extremely bright/visible but better than having no led), overall front and rear design is nice and simple and elegant - side profile is stylish too - not just straight.

I still think I would have liked the Grey model better though - but the black is not far behind.

@ Nexus - still got a few more tests to carry out today/2moro.

Be clear man - have no idea what your point is :p

Another question.. am I right in thinking that the S has 1gb of 'internal' storage for apps? Or is the whole 10-16gb defined as internal storage? Basically I've suffered enough with the pathetic Desire storage and I wanna make sure the same wont happen with the S! I know there is no SD/removable storage though..

It is 2.21GB for apps and 9.93GB for photos, videos etc.

I have over 600 photos (that includes 1080P videos etc.) and about 65 apps installed (a few games), along with some emulator files for N64, sega etc. wallpapers etc. and this is what I have left regarding storage for both:

T4CDH.png

Basically if you plan on throwing all your music, a few tv episodes etc. on to the phone then storage will be a problem but if you try to organize your music, tv episodes etc. for what you want to watch the next day etc. it shouldn't be a problem :)

EDIT:

Sorry missed the main part of your question :p :o

I think you can use the full 10GB of storage, which is for photos etc. as well.

Just checked in the app settings (in the android manager) and you have the option of moving to phone storage or SD card :)

^ Just don't get addicted to burst/best shot mode. :p

I ended up disabling over 50 bloat apps this morning  and finally had a play with a few games.
3D performance is excellent! The phone stays cool, battery life is great and Adreno 225 owns everything you throw at it. 28nm rocks!
Also watching video has very little impact on battery life. The S4 must have a full decoder now? It definitely feels more than a die shrink/AMOLED doing that. A huge leap from the S2/3 snapdragon and probably almost matches Exynos 4412 for power/efficiency!

Anyway here's my battery life stats. :)

(also includes about 10 mins of battery killing flash playback in the browser and no calls, still got my old contract for that)

Oh and completely forgot how awesome AMOLED is for reading in bed  (A RGB matrix would make it even better! *checks Galaxy Tab 7.7 prices*)

Yup, it's easily the best design around. The matt black ceramic finish is perfect for everyday use too, I wouldn't swap it for the grey. :p

Nice, look forward to seeing them :)

That would not have been good if you did drop them particularly the one S!!!! :p You would have had a black phone with silver edges then :D :p

The camera truly is a joy to use on the one series mobiles, makes taking photos etc. a lot more enjoyable I find :p I sometimes even just take photos of random things every now and again just so that I can use the camera :o :p Personally for me it is the one of the best features of the phone.

I haven't noticed any flickers on my screen yet.....*touch wood*

Using the stable free version.

Good speed that :) Better than what I get with o2 in my area (about 2MB dll or something)

The design/looks certainly is something that you really do appreciate, even more once you get over the main software of a new phone and tweaking everything etc.

Something that really does last in the long run of things :)

Pffffft :p

Nice, look forward to seeing the rest :)

50!?!?!

What the xxxx did you disable? :p lol

Probably a bit of both AMOLED/S4  It is great for videos!

Could you have made the red text any smaller? :p :D

Very nice battery life there though  Also did you have a mobile data connection when the wifi was disabled?

What was the screen brightness?

Thanks nexus that does answer my question. The problem with the desire is apps that you can't move to 'external' storage. I think its if they need to sync or update or something in the background? Anyway I have a huge list of apps I want to use but can't because of it! If there's 2gb+ internal on the S then I'm sure that's fine! As for filling up the rest.. its a shame you can't chuck in a 64gb SD card but I use an ipod for all my music anyway. If that ever dies I'd probably move on to using spotify or something!

The screen was set to low in the morning, auto for the rest.
My talkmobile 2g signal is a fairly decent here but it's still constantly jumping around towers, you dont notice if they're all strong signals though. There's only one gmail account and a weather widget (met office) synced btw.

No problem :)

Yeah, you can't move apps that have widgets on the homescreen or are needed on the phone memory etc.

Yup, 2GB+ will be more than enough unless you plan on installing a xxxx load of games etc. :p

Indeed! It is the main downfall of the S IMO :( If it had the same amount of the X or/and SD slot, the mobile would have been a lot more popular, stupid HTC........ :( :p

Just in case you aren't aware :) You also get 25GB of dropbox storage for the next 2 years :)

Ah nice then, thanks :) If you manually controlled the brightness, you would have probably got about another 20 minutes on screen time :)

Unfortunately I don't like chrome, few problems with pages not rendering properly and not keen on the UI and opera just doesn't render any web pages properly for me (last time I tried on my spica) and the text looks weird :p and not too keen on the UI either, tried the latest firefox build out but wasn't keen on the UI either :p and it wasn't as fast for me :(

Nexus - tried both Chrome and Firefox and neither appealed against ICS+. I did install Opera Mobile and have been pleasantly surprised. Have you tried it of late? I have come upon a small niggle with ICS+. If I was to scroll down through a page of posts on this forum say, and then double tap on the text I want to read to zoom in then it always jumps back a way up the page as it re-formats the text? Then have to scroll back down to where I want to read again. Don't know if it's a setting I've messed up? Anyhow, I'm finding Opera faster. Loading fast and scrolls faster if anything. Double tap to scroll in works very well and re-formats text very fast. I'm going to try it for a few days and see if it becomes my default browser. It's a whole lot better than the last time I tried it a long time ago on an old Nokia I think!

Thxs for the headsup Sarge :D

Hell, what did you dump? There is (was) a lot of stuff on mine I'd never use.

Though I've done no gaming on my phone I did use Sygic for a 280mile trip up to Scotland with CameraAlert running in the background. Now with same setup on previous Motorola it would get quite warm and often as not, crash. On One S it remained cold and never missed a beat. Even though plugged in to a 2amp charger so charging as if plugged into mains (1amp) as opposed to usb charge mode, could not keep pace and slowly depleted the battery. You'd have to go a long way though run battery flat.

I haven't tried it for quite a while and not on my S yet, will give it a go soon and report back :)

Yeah I have that as well except it doesn't jump all the way back to the top, just a bit further up. I thought it was normal enough that? As the text is being reformatted to fit the screen.

Sounds pretty good from what you said there :)

My biggest gripe with it (when I tried it) was that it just wasn't rendering pages properly and then some colours just seemed of with it.

Just tried opera mobile out:

first problem :p  the evil 3 dot menu button (so this instantly rules it out completely :p)

- rendering problem still there i.e. this forum just doesn't look right at all in terms of layout and colours along side google etc.
- found it a bit slower than ICS + and sense browser, plus the rendering isn't instant like the others, much like chrome (desktop version) it renders whilst it loads, which I am not a fan off
- when pinch to zoom in, it isn't as smooth, a bit jerky I found
- the text reflow does work very well though and is quick
- Not keen on the UI still
- Prefer the style of ICS+ and sense when selecting text etc.

So as you can see, still not a fan :(

ICS+ still my default browser for now, although going to give quick ICS browser another go as I found it to be just as good as ICS+ but more feature rich overall.

Root! Getting rid of that 3 dot menu has made my phone a lot nicer to use.

And you can fiddle with roms and other things I know you'll find interesting.

I keep reading how others One S's stay cool...my battery temp was up to 40 degrees at one point today and the top of the phone felt quite hot to the touch.

I was in the car, browsing the net and it was sunny too so maybe the sun toasted things up a little.

Not yet :p Going to give it a couple more updates to see what HTC improve/tweak first and if they don't sort a few things out then I will :)

How easy is it to root and flash custom ROMs on HTC mobiles? Easier than Samsung's?

Oh there is no doubt that I would be fiddling every day regarding kernels etc. :p :o (which is partly why I am trying to hold of as well :p)

Yeah if it was warm/sunny in your area then that could be why it got hot, cars are like ovens on a hot day  :p

Did you have it connected to the car charger at the same time as well?

Not quite as easy (unless it's changed for the S3) but there's not much in it. I'm sure you'll find it to be simple.

Once the custom recovery is installed you can do as you please very easily.
