*** The official HTC One S thread ***

Indeed - not a fan of Sony/SE either - they don't quite have the complete package IMO - don't like their skin either.

I have noticed the slight pink tint on whites with this HOS screen - pretty much just like the AMOLED Deisre I had before the S2. The S2 has a very slight off-white tint and the S3 is really white with the slightest hint of blue - but in isolation the s3 is very very bright white.

And its very annoying that the battery stats on the HOS reset after a reboot.

Likewise, no idea why I am not more interested in their phones though  as the hardware/camera etc. is great and there support for updates is very good.

My 1S is very white on white.......Doesn't this vary a lot with every type of AMOLED screen regarding the tints and whites? :( Compared to my bro's amoled desire, the 1S is much whiter. Also can't see any tinting on my screen either, will check again later when it is much darker.

I thought that was standard the stats being reset after a reboot? :p Could it be a bug maybe? Probably is a problem with sense

UK 2012 Xperia S yet to get ICS officially - :p

You have a Dell 2311 right? How does whites look compared to that? Yeah there is a lot of variation on AMOLEDS - but pink tint is a Pentile thing iirc.

My S2 is very well balanced and compared to my sister's S2 - her one has half a side of yellow tint.

On the S2 and S3, the battery stats i.e. the Android graph/stats etc dont reset after a rebbot - only reset after a full charge - handy for me.

I can't seem to disable flash on ICS+ Browser - do you have that problem? flash still loads on the off and on-demand setting!!

And no automatic dedicated screenshot folder - come on HTC :p
All bunched up in DCIM.

True! :p :D

Yeah a U2311H  :) I will compare the 2 later as it is still rather light here and the velux window blind lets some light in still :o

I may notice it then when in pure darkness with a pure white screen, but in real world use I haven't noticed any issues with mine yet.......

Ah right. I thought that was normal as even when I restart my PC, the up time etc. is reset.

Is it the same with other phones?

Never tried turning flash off as I like having flash :p but I will give that a go in a few minutes and post back here :)

Yeah that is rather annoying that! Although again not an issue for me personally, as once I upload the screenshots to my imgur account (straight after I take the SS as well), I delete them from the phone :p

They've been busy updating their entire range to 4.0.4 :) NXT UI looks sweet, miles better than the buggy mess of Sense 4.
Sony and Samsung are miles ahead of the rest for Android implementation tbh, both are very well optimised, get a (high end) Samsung if you want a cartoony iOS rip or (any) Sony for something more grown up ;) If only they designed phones like HTC.
(Sony dropped the CRT lock animation for something smoother a while back btw.)

I can't seem to disable flash on ICS+ Browser - do you have that problem? flash still loads on the off and on-demand setting!!

ICS+ Browser is just a skin for the stock browser engine, which HTC screwed up... :D (I'm using opera mobile, a bit slower but everything works) A custom ROM will probably fix it.

AMOLEDS...

I really hated the pentile effect at first but you get used to it after a few days and the rest is more than good enough. Sure it's not ideal but you can't complain at this price (AMOLED colour variation or those patches you only see in pitch black conditions are pointless worrying about :p)

@Kona

Disabling flash works fine for me on ICS +

AlIHK.png ZYBpU.png

@Sarge

then thumbs down to SE for dropping it! :p what did they replace it with? Any videos?

What doesn't work for you with the sense browser? I personally found it to be very good and better overall than the 3rd party browsers. Only reason I am using ICS + is cause it is quicker at loading and rendering web pages plus the quick controls are much better :)

The only area that is poor for browsing, which I have only noticed is that you can't play 1080/720 youtube videos smoothly.

He means the on demand option.

Flash integration is messed up, text input is messed up (like replying to this thread) and it saps power (probably due to it being a complete buggy mess)

I'd stay clear and use a different engine like chrome beta, opera or firefox until they fix it (the rest are skins and suffer the same problems)

I think he meant both :p

:p

But yeah I just tried the on demand setting as well now and it doesn't work, all the flash stuff still shows.

I too also noticed the text input, when wanting to place the cursor near the start of a line (using my finger) the cursor would go mad and the screen jumps all over the place, however, I remember reading that mrk had this issue with his GS 2 or/and GS 3 as well, so could just be a problem with ICS? I just use swiftkey and the cursor keys now though :p

I also have read about quite a few people complaining about the power being drained a lot when browsing, although I thought this was standard as well on AMOLED screens due to all the whites etc.?

This is what I get with heavy browsing (well heavy for me :p):

I just love the battery life! :D

Similar usage as stated before, but a bit more heavy use for web browsing this time and automatic brightness:

0BEiQ.png MBSVD.png 0iISD.png SSGTH.png

Unfortunately I don't like chrome, few problems with pages not rendering properly and not keen on the UI and opera just doesn't render any web pages properly for me (last time I tried on my spica) and the text looks weird :p and not too keen on the UI either, tried the latest firefox build out but wasn't keen on the UI either :p and it wasn't as fast for me :(

Wow!

Did you have a black background with white text or white background with black text?

Yeah, you should get somewhere near that, as said very hard to tell though as too many factors to consider.

What is your average on screen time with that ROM and roughly how much browsing would you do?

Looks like another reason to root and flash now! :p

I had black background and white text of course.

As for average screen on then it's a case of how long is a piece of string. So many ifs and buts and depends how I use the the phone, that I really don't take much notice. Today I'm down to 45% and 2 hours 15 mins screen usage. All I know that my phone generally comes off charge at 6am and by time for bedfordshire :D at 11pm there is generally plenty of juice left in the battery. Charge it every night - rightly or wrongly.

Yeah a U2311H  :)

U2711 here :cool::)

Ah right. I thought that was normal as even when I restart my PC, the up time etc. is reset.

Yes the uptime resets on the S2 etc but all the battery stats remain in the battery usage screen.

Never tried turning flash off as I like having flash :p but I will give that a go in a few minutes and post back here :)

Yeah put the option to off on both stock and ICS+ but flash still remains on

Thumbs up to HTC for the text reflow though - their implemantation is excellent and works beatuifully on ICS+.

Had a quick go on the Camera - the software/UI is very nice and the shot's seem to come out very well. Will have to wait until I get them on the PC for ultimate judgement. Hopefully 2moro I can do some back to back testing of the camera with the S2.

Performance wise - not noticing any difference really between the HOS and S2. Am using the HOS as my primary at the mo - I'll report back if I notice a performance difference when I switch back to the S2.

I agree with Sarge - you get more used to the Pentile the more you use the HOS. But it's still very noticebale when you concentrate. Not a biggie for many people but I notice it a lot as I've been used to RGB. When I had my Desire there was a lot of fuss kicked up about Pentile - I never noticed it as I was used to it - but I can easliy notice it know.

Ah ok, very hard to tell then as obviously the black backgrounds consume very little to no power at all really.

Haha true, my usage is very much the same every day so I sort of know what to expect and when to start charging it again :p :D

About 4+ hours on screen time (manual control) for me is my average with pretty heavy usage.

U2711 here :cool::)

Nice!

It would be far too big for my desk! I think my eye sight would go after 2 days of usage lol :p

The dell ips monitors are superb

Yes the uptime resets on the S2 etc but all the battery stats remain in the battery usage screen.

I meant on other phones like the nexus, SE etc. :p

Unless you are including those phones as well by using the "etc." :p

Yeah put the option to off on both stock and ICS+ but flash still remains on

Hmm strange that!

You got the latest flash version installed and just to be sure the latest baseband/software for the S?

Thumbs up to HTC for the text reflow though - their implemantation is excellent and works beatuifully on ICS+.

Yeah it is pretty nice, I personally just use double tap to zoom mostly :p

Had a quick go on the Camera - the software/UI is very nice and the shot's seem to come out very well. Will have to wait until I get them on the PC for ultimate judgement. Hopefully 2moro I can do some back to back testing of the camera with the S2.

The effects are cool aren't they!? :D The UI is very good, very minimal and functional and at the same time you really get the full screen instead of borders for the buttons etc.

You tried the stock gallery yet in regards to editing etc.?

Performance wise - not noticing any difference really between the HOS and S2. Am using the HOS as my primary at the mo - I'll report back if I notice a performance difference when I switch back to the S2.

Haven't you rooted and got a custom ROM on your GS 2? Could be why you don't see much of a difference most likely. The difference would be more noticeable if your GS 2 was on the stock ROM I would imagine. I have only been able to compare to the GS 2 on stock ROM and found the s more snappy overall and quicker at carry tasks out etc.

What about browsing speeds regarding rendering and loading web pages of all types i.e. flash/image, gif intensive etc.?

Just in case you weren't aware :), you can enable a max wifi performance setting in the advanced menu in the wifi settings.

Yeah, do you notice it everywhere or just in certain places like the notification icons and desktop icons etc.?

What about text in the browser, which do you think looks sharper/clearer?

BTW I just tried the white test and comparing it to my monitor......my mobile actually looks whiter than my monitor (just a pure white screen)........... I thought the monitor would have been much whiter?

Also I can see no tinting or uneven colours at all on my S. I will try to get a photo showing the difference between my monitor and mobile etc. but I don't think it will come out very well. Tried putting the brightness of my mobile to 50% and then 100%, couldn't see any issues at all.

EDIT:

Here are just a couple of photos of the mobile displaying a white screen in the dark, one at 50% brightness and 100% brightness, photos were taken by the desire. Doesn't look quite the same as what it does with your own eyes but that is the best I could do, sorry :(

DYliP.jpg jGiGs.jpg

Tried getting one of my monitor and mobile as well, but couldn't get a good photo.

The Screen's more good enough, pentile is the only negative. It's not a £700 iPhone or SGS3. :D

opera just doesn't render any web pages properly for me

It's well worth installing Opera Mini Next for those times your limited to 2G or you just want improve battery life on 3G/WiFi. It's got huge data/battery saving potential.
Opera Mobile 12 is rock solid too and probably has the best flash integration and text reflow around. Presto needs an update to match the latest ICS webkit engine for speed but it's still fast and smooth.
These mobile browser wars are great, we've come so far in a short space of time. Major software updates give you a bigger speed boost than moving to faster new hardware. My 1Ghz single core Arc gets 2500 in sunspider in OM12!

The camera effects are cool aren't they!? :D

If anyone hasn't tried it yet... Group portrait mode is awesome! You can get some well funny shots :D Shame you cant edit them like that Scalado Rewind demo app but the auto edit does a great job.

Haven't you rooted and got a custom ROM on your GS 2? Could be why you don't see much of a difference most likely.

The only real area I've noticed a speed boost is with apps like viewranger (i.e. rendering lots of locally stored OS tiles, ironic the One S has no storage space? :D) and that snappy thang only faster hardware seems to bring. Like Johnnytoxic's video of him zipping between the UI and apps. From what I remember the One S is zippier than the stock GN/SGS2.

Nice!

The dell ips monitors are superb .

Definitly superb. I came from a 2007wfp - so was quite a huge but delightful shock to the senses :D. A month later I was used to it.

I meant on other phones like the nexus, SE etc. :p

Unless you are including those phones as well by using the "etc." :p.

I've just seen it on the recent samsung phones and tabs - S2, S3, Note, Tab7.7. Will check my mates Gnex when I see him. Can't remember on the LG 2X though, but I'm quite sure that had it.

Hmm strange that!

You got the latest flash version installed and just to be sure the latest baseband/software for the S?

Not sure if I have the lastest flash - will check. But I did notice that on a page that flash did not load - may have to clear the cache and maybe reboot.
Annoying.

Camera UI looks just right - the shutter sound is nice too. Haven't tried the stock gallery effects yet or the effects on the camera.

My S2 is rooted and ICS themed - but still on the stock ROM with no performance tweaks at all.

What I did notice is that the HOS is smoother on pinch to zoom in the browser and is very fast at loading new images in Quickpic - i.e. caching for the first time. Still on ongoing observation on the rest.

What about browsing speeds regarding rendering and loading web pages of all types i.e. flash/image, gif intensive etc.?

Just in case you weren't aware :), you can enable a max wifi performance setting in the advanced menu in the wifi settings..

Not tested fully yet as I always browse flash on-demand and having trouble disabling the flash. Will test with flash and heavy sites though. Stay tuned. :)

Will test the wifi range compared to the S2 too.

Yeah, do you notice it everywhere or just in certain places like the notification icons and desktop icons etc.?

What about text in the browser, which do you think looks sharper/clearer?

At 30cm distance - pentile on the HOS is pretty much un-noticeable for me. But when I have it closer; 10-15cm, when browsing in portrait, the Pentile effect is noticeable on stuff like text, images/widgets etc.

BTW I just tried the white test and comparing it to my monitor......my mobile actually looks whiter than my monitor (just a pure white screen)........... I thought the monitor would have been much whiter?

Maybe your monitor is not the best reference as it's florecent backlit so gives more of a yellowy-white. Shame you don't live close by - would be soo much easier that way comparing it to an S3. In isolation though the pink tinge is pretty negligable.

The HOS side by side with my S2 really pronounces the yellownes on my S2 screen - otherise unnoticeable on it's own.

Since you guys are talking about the pentile screen, will I notice any difference from my desire? From what Ive read part of me expects to see really blocky aliased/jagged text but I'm sure that's not the case. No?

Indeed! :D

I will give opera another shot, but I can't see myself sticking with it due to the lack of quick ics control etc. :p

Opera mini was a life saver for me on spica when on 3's xxxxxx network.

If anyone hasn't tried it yet... Group portrait mode is awesome! You can get some well funny shots :D Shame you cant edit them like that Scalado Rewind demo app but the auto edit does a great job.

Actually haven't tried that yet as I got no one to be in a group with..........:o

:p

Just joking........... ¬_¬

Will have to give it a go soon :)

Yeah that is mainly what I noticed as well, just a more "snappier" feel overall.

Definitly superb. I came from a 2007wfp - so was quite a huge but delightful shock to the senses :D. A month later I was used to it.

Nice upgrade then! :D

I came from a Samsung 19" LCD display (sync master 930BF) :o

Needless to say the difference was huge lol.

I've just seen it on the recent samsung phones and tabs - S2, S3, Note, Tab7.7. Will check my mates Gnex when I see him. Can't remember on the LG 2X though, but I'm quite sure that had it.

Ah ok, probably a bug of sense then  :p

Not sure if I have the lastest flash - will check. But I did notice that on a page that flash did not load - may have to clear the cache and maybe reboot.
Annoying.

Yeah iirc flash wasn't listed on my apps on the play store yet it was installed, however, it wasn't the latest version so once I went to the market and installed it, it was then shown in the market on my installed apps list.

Camera UI looks just right - the shutter sound is nice too. Haven't tried the stock gallery effects yet or the effects on the camera.

Yeah the shutter sound is nice and subtle and it is nice to have the option of turning it off as well ¬_¬

:p

You're missing out on the best part!!!!! :p

What I did notice is that the HOS is smoother on pinch to zoom in the browser and is very fast at loading new images in Quickpic - i.e. caching for the first time. Still on ongoing observation on the rest.

I actually thought the GS 2 and 1s were the same for that tbh :p, just as smooth as each other really (using samsungs stock browser)

Will test the wifi range compared to the S2 too.

Yeah be good to hear about that as well :)

Also a few speed tests as well (with the wifi max performance enabled and disabled) if possible :p :)

At 30cm distance - pentile on the HOS is pretty much un-noticeable for me. But when I have it closer; 10-15cm, when browsing in portrait, the Pentile effect is noticeable on stuff like text, images/widgets etc.

Yeah, I notice it on the notification icons easily when about 10cm from the screen or so (but I have to concentrate on the area in order to notice it) but the rest looks fine to me really.

So do you find the GS 2 screen to be sharper for text etc. then as well?

Maybe your monitor is not the best reference as it's florecent backlit so gives more of a yellowy-white. Shame you don't live close by - would be soo much easier that way comparing it to an S3. In isolation though the pink tinge is pretty negligable.

I can't see any signs of yellowy white at all on my monitor either or any tint issues, it just didn't seem to be as "bright white" as my mobile.

Haha it certainly would be :D

I will try to get better photos tomorrow including my monitor and mobile side by side, can't promise good quality photos though :p

Since you guys are talking about the pentile screen, will I notice any difference from my desire? From what Ive read part of me expects to see really blocky aliased/jagged text but I'm sure that's not the case. No?

My brother has the desire AMOLED version and I can easily say that the screen looks MUCH better for everything, colours, sharpness, screen real estate, brightness and of course size :p

It really is a much better screen, I find the desire to be incredibly dull as well compared to the S.

Although best thing as always, is to go and see for yourself what you think compared to your desire :)

I will be very surprised if you're disappointed with it compared to your desire :p :)

Cheers nexus. I have had a quick look and thought the screen was nice. I'm not a pixel peeper but certainly didn't see anything wrong with it! I had the girlfriend looking over ny shoulder though so I only really had time to compare sizes between my desire, the one s/x and sg2/3 before I was dragged away :p

No problem :)

Yeah the screen is a lot better than what a lot of the "expert" reviewers say IMO (and everyone that has seen my S have been very impressed with the screen, one of the first things that they comment on). As Sarge said, it isn't a £450+ mobile like the GS 3 and 4/4s. And the rest of the phone i.e. speed, battery life, etc. more than makes up for the pentile matrix (which I personally only notice on a few items and only when I am very close to the screen concentrating on the areas :p).

lol :D

i've rooted so cant install OTA update. Anyone know of a htc one s sense rom thats updated? I really want stock (i like htc sense)

Been ages since I updated :p so can't remember if signal strength got worse/better or remained the same, I think it stayed more or less the same though.

One thing, which I did notice though was that wifi related tasks were carried out much quicker and I was getting better speeds as well.

I too have that problem every now and again. It is rather annoying but I just close the browser and kill it and relaunch it and that solves everything then :)
