*** The official HTC One S thread ***

Not quite as easy (unless it's changed for the S3) but there's not much in it. I'm sure you'll find it to be simple.

Once the custom recovery is installed you can do as you please very easily.

Yeah, with my Spica, it was incredibly simple, at first when you read through all the guides (like a hundred times :p :o) it seemed so complicated and like rocket science :p :o but once it is carried out, my god it was so simple and easy, will probably be the same for HTC devices (I hope :p) in the end as well but it does seem like there is more to do with HTC phones regarding unlocking, s-off etc. from quickly skimming through one guide at XDA :(

Have you noticed any other improvements on your X after putting a custom ROM on?

It's a bit smoother and faster, but other than that, not really.

The battery life may be a little bit better, but there's not much in it.

Yeah just the usual stuff really then, personally not too bothered by those areas as speed and smoothness for me is great currently along with the battery life, unless you really could get a xxxx load more battery life :p

Main things for me would just be the tweaks really:

- MHL TV refresh rate being tweaked
- adfree app
- USB OTG
- 3 dots menu removed (should be sorted by HTC at some point though.....)
- improved auto brightness
- pitch black status bar with ICS notification icons
- ICS theme

Among a few other things probably :p

Bah! After listing all the stuff I would do, now I am really tempted to root!!!!! :p

Sounds like it's worth it to me. :p

I've done it for the removal of the 3 dot menu and nothing else, any minor things are a bonus but they aren't really noticeable most of the time.

Yup :p Will have a read through guides etc. tomorrow and decide what to do :p :o

Likewise, however, after reading that HTC will allow you to remap the menu button to the multi-tasking button, it isn't too much of a problem for me now (unless they take months to introduce that tweak :p)

The next big/main thing is getting rid of ads, they ruin the majority of apps for me

And as you said, anything else would be a bonus, not necessary really i.e. the stuff I mentioned above but still nice/useful to have anyway.

Don't forget HTC haven't added power output to the micro USB port, the phone can't physically power anything. (If I remember correctly) Major hassle if you planned on using a memory stick.
I hate HTC at times :p

Damn them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

:p

Was hoping to do that, but I have a spare hard drive lying around and external enclosure (own power source) so better than nothing, just not as portable :p :o

Resized?!?!?! :p

I have to say I honestly think the HTC one S photos look better in every one there by a quite a large amount as well, wasn't expecting there to be much of a difference.

The main area where the main difference is the colours obviously :p, the 1S is more vibrant in everyone, which I personally prefer, I know that some aren't keen on that though :)

The GS 2 actually looks pretty washed out and lacks depth of colour when you compare it to the 1s IMO.

Still good photos though.

Sharpness too hard to tell really, doesn't seem to be much difference between them at all, will notice this with further shots later i.e. macro

What do you think kona?

EDIT:

Although, hard to say, which is better here:

The GS 2 lights the back of the garden up a lot more (and the other shadowed areas), but the front part where the bags are, aren't as colourful or detailed and the same goes for the tiles part.

resized for easier comparison!:p - full size looked the same to me, just bigger :p

What do you think kona? - I think they're both flawed TBH.

HOS is very saturated - but has great contrast - exposure mostly great but some times too low - makes shady areas look really dark.
S2 has truer colours but lacks the HOS's contrast - exposure is sometimes a bit too high too - loses detail in bright scenes.

Sharpness maybe a tad higher on the HOS - the S2 has to go down to 6.5MP in widescreen mode.

I agree with you Nexus that the HOS is definitely the better camera. :)

I keep reading how others One S's stay cool...my battery temp was up to 40 degrees at one point today and the top of the phone felt quite hot to the touch.

I was in the car, browsing the net and it was sunny too so maybe the sun toasted things up a little.

I also noticed the battery temp was higher on the HOS side by side with the S2 doing the same tasks on comparison tests.

edit - still can't turn flash off on this damn HOS - HOW CRAZY!

Lol :D

Yeah it is better for when looking on the forum/thread comparing, but nicer when you open them in a new tab or view them full screen, get all the detail then :) :p

Yeah, that is another niggle I find with the 1S camera myself, always have to point the camera in a bright area or just the darker area (only an issue though when it is the extreme brightness and darkness I find), not both as things just don't look right then as shown by the ones I linked of yours in my previous post.

You can try to manually focus on certain points to try and balance things out though, which helps a bit.

Ah yeah forgot about that!

Thanks for all these photos/comparisons! :) Look forward to reading/seeing more :)

Also a 1080P video comparison would be good to, if possible :) :p

That is very weird, I wonder why you can't yet I can

Ok - seems things have progressed a bit.

Got them both setup up evenly in the browser regarding flash - got thrown by the fact I have ad-blocker from rooting my s2 - didn't know it took away adds from the browser - just thought it did in-app adds. :o:D

What I have noticed that on lightly loaded pages like text pages on this forum with minimal pictures the speed is about the same - using ICS+.

When the page gets heavier with adverts etc, like Engadget, the HOS is just a tad ahead on page load times - nothing major.

loading this page with GIFs: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showpost.php?p=14085074&postcount=5 - the HOS has much higher framerates on the gifs - S2 is like a slideshow.

The HOS's screen is also more responsive to the touch in extreme conditions like the flick test on long web pages - S2 needs 2 flicks to get going but scrolls for longer than the HOS. In normal use both screen are just as responsive - though the HOS may have the edge.

lol, some classic gifs there :D

Makes sense, the HOS has an extra third party ISP chip to power and it's doing full res time stamp processing for zero shutter lag. Maybe a video battery test is needed? (although you'd probably run out of space on the HOS first :p)

Nice garden btw!

Image quality hasn't changed that much from last year tbh. For me the biggest difference is all those extra usable features!

Zero shutter lag = Awesome!
Burst mode/best shot = Awesome!
Group shot = Awesome!
Full 8MP recording = Great! (well, if you could turn it off and have much better 1080p and no full res still output. HX-Camera-mod please :D)
HDR = Cool! (but the 8MP sensor can be pushed quite a bit in the shadows without gaining much grain too, Stock HOS vs quick Lightroom edit)

Yeah the new camera software/features are excellent.

Would be great if I had the S3 on hand for comparison's - but that's mega effort :D.

How's your HOS Sarge - Do you get any flicker on the screen? Have you sorted the sim cover issue?

My HOS seems to be the older model without the bevelled egde on the usb port :(.

Batterylife on this thing is mega-epic - 4hrs+ screen on time is easy (deffo better than the S2 with ext. battery). Am currently on 3hrs with 50% battery left. RAZR-HD MAXX should be a monster!

I think the HOS pictures look quite a bit better too.

They seem to capture the scene better despite being over saturated, but in most cases that just makes things look better anyway. :p

No screen flickering here, well maybe once on older firmware? (Haven't had time to sort the sim cover out yet, too busy playing around it )

Quick question, where the hell are the power buttons on the Notification bar (WiFi, Rotate, GPS etc)? Do you need to activate/customize them or will i have to put on a Custom ROM?

Stupid question, but i just don't understand why they've gone!
