*** The official HTC One S thread ***

Tempted! :p

Can I flash themes and some tweaks i.e. your camera mod and the 3 dot menu button tweak without having to flash a custom ROM?

EDIT:

With Samsung devices, you have to flash deodexed ROMs in order to flash themes etc. no idea if it is the same for HTC devices.

EDIT:

I don't think I am network locked as I have no o2 branding on the boot up screen or o2 apps etc.?

Doesn't matter if you are network locked.

Yeh the 3dot Menu, MHL mod and Camera just alter files on your current rom. Doesn't change it at all.

If you screw the rom up somehow you just restore the Nandroid backup exactly how it was. It's easy, I can walk you through if need be.

Ah, nice! :)

I tell you what, if there is no update or word about us getting an update/jellybean etc. by the 1st August, I shall root on that very day! :p

Thanks :) I will hold you to that as I will no doubt need some help and someone to keep me calm during the process :o :p

ya sissy. not sure why your waiting for your carrier to release an update. You would get JellyBean months earlier by flashing it yourself.

If you have MSN or somet I bet I could have you rooted within half an hour on your current rom. Probably less than that.

EDIT: Ahh you would need to use Mybackuppro before doing it as unlocking the bootloader will wipe all apps, contacts etc. No issue though as it would all go back on.

@kona

Thanks for that :)

My SH is in a different room, got 2 walls in between my room and the room that it is in and it is on the same floor.

Will try FTP again sometime with my phone in the same room as the SH and see what speeds are like.

NP.

I think that's why your getting low FTP speeds - due to the router being so far away - but then again 45Mbps internet speed kind of goes against that theory :(.

The local Test should clear things up to see what's what.

Not true! :p

I'm on a factory Samsung ROM (Odex) and have flashed the ICS Domination Theme :p

ya sissy.

I know :( :o

I know I know............I am silly to be waiting :o

:p

I mean it though, if nothing is announced/released by August 1st you can be sure that I'll be rooting :p

I think if the performance and battery life of the phone wasn't as good as it currently is, I would have rooted the device long ago.

If you have MSN or somet I bet I could have you rooted within half an hour on your current rom. Probably less than that.

Yeah probably would be :p

I don't have msn etc. only google talk.

Yeah, not too bothered about apps etc. being wiped and having to reinstall them (only be bothered if I was flashing a new ROM like every 3 days or something :p) and google contacts will be synced back anyway :)

Only would need to transfer my photos and app data for the likes of OI safe etc. which is backed up frequently anyway.

Yeah, not too sure what is going on :( Signal strength varies a wee bit depending on how many devices are connected etc. as well.

Will give it a test when it is just me connected to the SH and then another test later on when all 5 devices are connected and post screenshots etc. so probably in the next few days.

Not true! :p

Oh

Must be slightly different to the galaxy spica procedure then as I had to root and flash a deodexed ROM in order to flash themes :(

Zagg screen protectors are awful! Awful feel to them, best to just get the standard HTC ones or some other from ebay for a couple of pounds or the ones you linked there.

I got a pack of 10 made by Kolay on rainforest site for £2.28. They look OK and yet to fit one.

The TPU gel cases would be the best for that then as they cover all edges whilst adding very little bulk or if you don't mind the top and bottom being exposed then the rock quicksand case. Also you don't have to worry about the chipping issue any more now :D

Also i got a TPU Gel case off same site for £3.99 including P&P. Fits nicely but pushes the edge of the Invisible Shield screen protector up slightly. Doesn't bulk the phone very much and gives it some protection. Also looks good :D I see the Kolay screen protectors are slightly narrow which will overcome that prob and as the edge of the glass curves slightly, will stop the unsightly edge lifting.

Glad you're happy with it Richy!

Reasonably  Only one issue in that it keeps dropping connection as described on this forum and elsewhere. It, the One X has better reception than the S. 14 hours since came off charge and only used 50% of battery which is slightly better than I was getting with the One S! 1 hour screen time but quite a few calls today, some browsing etc. Only 1% of time without signal which is very good. One S would average 30% and more. Like I say it keeps dropping signal but signal is 2 bars minimum in house and once away from buildings 4 or 5 bars. Usually connects again within a minute but very occasionally needs a reboot. Damned HTC, always a little issue with them. Other than that I like the phone.

Much better by the sounds of it then, glad you are finally sorted out in some ways now :)

Time to sell the defy :p

Hopefully my diztronic case will be here tomorrow.....

Depart USPS Sort Facility July 04, 2012

Looking forward to your thoughts on the Diztronic.

Bought me and the missus a couple of cheap gel cases to get us going. they should be here tomorrow. If they are pap, then the Diz is next in line.
Fitted some HTC protectors tonight. I hate fitting those things. It seems no matter what you do, its tough to get them perfect. I dont know what experience you had with yours, but IMO they are a fraction too big width wise. It is only a fraction, but, and this could be HTC quality control again, the screen is slightly recessed down the sides, which means you have to line it up absolutely bang on, otherwise the sides wont smooth out.

Or maybe i`m just rubbish :D

Yeah, hopefully it will show up tomorrow or the day after, hope it doesn't take any longer than that............

The best way to apply screen protectors is after you or someone else has had a nice long hot shower and kept the door closed as the steam works wonders with dust :D :p

I did a mini review of the ones that I got (also the official HTC screen protectors):

Case arrived!

Taking photos now etc. for a mini review, so be up soon :)

Only thing, which I don't like so far is that it doesn't have any grip apart from the glossy part areas on the front edges :(

Mini review is done :)

Mini Review of the Diztronic Matte Black TPU Case:

You receive a screen protector and cleaning cloth with the case. The screen protector doesn't appear to be a great fit, no idea about the quality and how it affects the screen overall. The cleaning cloth seems pretty good :p

0WX9P.jpg

This case is very thin, it is slightly thinner than the TPU gel case, about 1mm is added to the S.

Diztronic case on the left, TPU gel case in the middle and the Tough case on the right:

Diztronic case on the left and the One S "naked" on the right:

GznE1.jpg KwBXs.jpg

The case looks great, in some ways the glossy front half of the case looks rather good with the back half a charcoal matte back (it is the exact same colour as the black S). Personally I would have preferred the front to have been the same colour/finish, however, the back is very smooth and not grippy at all, it has the least amount of grip compared to the other cases I own, I would say it has a more "slippy" feel than the ceramic back of the Black One S as well, where as the glossy black front half of the case is grippy, so you will have no problems picking the mobile up and when holding it firmly around the edges you should be safe enough, so in some ways the black glossy part is a requirement.

You have cut outs for the following:

- 3.5mm audio jack and the mic on the top of the S
- Mic on the bottom
- Power/Lock button
- USB port
- Speaker and Camera on the back

The edges of the cut outs have a nice rounded finish and look "smooth".

zR11p.jpg mSObz.jpg iXepu.jpg drbuo.jpg

In terms of the "fit", overall it is excellent, however, at the bottom of the front it is just a mm too short. It is pretty much the same as the TPU gel case for "tightness", although I found the Diztronic case slightly easier to fit.

BDFjL.jpg i5ipT.jpg

You can see (only when you look closely though) and feel some rough seam edges where the matte and glossy black parts meet, more so on the volume buttons (although the volume buttons have only the matte finish), but compared to the £3 TPU gel case, it is much better! There is one spot, which is particularly bad though, on the bottom left of the case:

Eg9en.jpg

The great thing about this case is that you have a cut out for the power/lock button :D The TPU gel case was too tight around that area and also the volume buttons are much better, easier to press and have good feedback when pressed, still not as good as the Tough Case though and obviously when the S is "naked". It is easy to identify the volume buttons without looking compared to the TPU gel case.

ZyL3p.jpg

The camera lens is below the surface and the case covers the edges on the front and adds a very tiny amount to the front so that there is a a raised edge for when the mobile is placed flat down on a surface to stop the screen touching the desk surface, it is slightly less than what the TPU gel case added.

Fdey9.jpg bro2X.jpg

Regarding finger prints, sticky patches and greasy looking marks, I don't think this is going to be a problem at all with this case due to the matte back and just how smooth it is. So far I have yet to see any finger prints etc. And if there is, you will only notice them under extreme lighting conditions and when looking at the case from certain angles.

xEfwv.jpg

It is more "comfortable" to hold the S with the Diztronic case rather than the S "naked", however, it doesn't "feel" as nice to touch/hold as the ceramic back on the S.

The case feels and looks much better than the TPU gel case, overall it has a higher quality feel and look to it.

The minimal/clean design for the front of the S is still hidden/ruined slightly, as expected, unfortunately as I said before this will be the same for every case that covers all the edges, only the rock/nillkin/case mate barely there cases would keep the front looking pretty minimal/clean, but they don't offer any protection around the top or bottom.

As for protection/durability, I would say that the case would do a good job protecting the mobile from normal drops and the standard scratches etc. however, a drop onto solid concrete etc. from a good height could damage the mobile i.e. crack the screen as their isn't enough thickness to the case like there is with the Tough case and there would be no shock absorption either. But for daily use, I would say it is perfectly fine. However, this case would show scruff marks on the corners/back when dropped onto concrete etc.

All in all, the case is very good especially considering the price (£8), highly recommend it to everyone especially if you are looking for a case to cover all edges but with little bulk.

IMO there isn't a better case out for the One S that covers all edges whilst adding little bulk and looking as nice overall, especially the lovely smooth matte back even though it isn't grippy :p

Pros:

- protection for all edges
- nice cut out for the power/lock button
- good feedback for the volume buttons, easy to identify and to activate the buttons
- nice finish/looks overall
- comfortable to hold
- Also receive a cleaning cloth and screen protector
- resistant to finger prints, greasy marks and sticky patches etc.
- price

Disadvantage:

- no grip at all on the matte back

Thanks for reading and I hope this review has been helpful and as always any questions, ask away :)

Great review Nexus - very thorough! :D

It's a smart case isn't it; much nicer than any other TPU case I've seen. It didn't feel slippery to me though. I have that same rough edge/bit too - part of the manufacturing process no doubt - still should have been smoothed off though. All in all a super case for £8 as you said. :)

Mine also turned up! lol

I must say though its exactly the same as another one i got off the auction site for £2.49 inc delivery (BLACK ProGel TPU Soft Skin Case Cover For HTC One S) except the Diztronic back half is matte and the other is gloss but the gloss version isnt as slippy as the Diztronic.

Both are good cases being pretty much identical!

What's the latest facts on the S4 chip being phased out by the S3 chip? I feel very under pressure to dive in and buy this phone before it happens, but is it actually happening?

I wouldn't rush out and buy one unless there's a cracking deal, the S4 should become very common towards the end of the year. Plus the new high end One S (720p screen + S4) shouldn't be that much more expensive and maybe it'll get a get a revised antenna design too :D
