12gb ram would be nice for AI stuff, smaller dynamic island would be cool too.

As usual though, year on year upgrades look to be very minor

Ai stuff in the 16 pro is pretty mid if we're being honest.

My guess is better stuff comes with the 17 pro, and only runs on the 17 pro due to it having more ram

I'd forgotten about the pre order so ended up doing it at 13:45. Delivery for pro 256 black is 25-30th Sept. Could have had pickup on the 20th but I'm away at the weekend so wouldn't be able to get to an apple store.

The hype hasn’t been there.

I think the days of just these slight upgrades are starting to end the hype for the masses.

Having said that I’m not sure what they could legit upgrade at this stage? What could be ground breaking.

It’s not just with the iPhone that update to the max pro was a joke.

For AI again, I'm not sure how Apple can significantly improve the AI features, though I'm sure they will do something but for now Apple seems to want to do the AI locally for the most part and that massively restricts what you can do - AI models, good ones anyway, need an enormous amount of processing and memory to run, so the AI features are directly proportional to the hardware on the phone and will struggle to match what online models like ChatGPT can do. Apple will probably have to do online server integration and then the question becomes how they monetise it because it's damn expensive to do and Apple may need to charge a subscription for more advanced features and how will iPhone owners respond to needing to pay a subscription to unlock more phone features

The fact Apple haven’t increased the price of these it seems they will likely be making less per device plus AI costs on top when that is available. I guess it won’t be a “good” result for Apple.

They won’t be doing any significant AI locally. That’s not even a thing on more powerful desktop computers. It’s a cloud thing unless you fancy buying a load of A100s just to run ChatGPT

If we boil it down; what did iPhone originally do? Apple did what others were starting to do - they took already existing electronics that used to be large, but now could be miniaturised thanks to technology breakthroughs - i.e TV screen is now 3 inches, camera is now half an inch, high capacity lion batteries, your modem is now half an inch, your phone reception is now quarter inch, your keyboard is now 2 inches, your music player is now half an inch etc - you take all these devices and miniaturise them and then Apple did what others couldn't and paired all those electronics with a great operating system that made it so easy for users to be able to make use of all the features.

Now why do we not have any further innovation these days - it's the same reason why the iPhone existed but now it's the opposite- what further consumer electronic devices can be miniaturised and put into a phone, and 1) have we not already miniaturised everything already and 2) do consumers even want it?

16 pro series yes but 16 normal is up

iPhone 16 sales up 10% over last year, 16 Plus sales up 48% over last year. The sales of the non pro models are up due to transfer of pro features down and Pro lacking new features to replace them, making the non pro models better value evidently

I can't go back to 60hz but other than that, the 16 Plus would meet my requirements perfectly, I only need the pro for 120hz, there is no other features worth paying for imo

To be fair those figures aren't exactly accurate. They're based on shipping estimates on the online Apple Store and a supply chain survey, whatever that is.

But it's no surprise to me that there's low demand. Tiny incremental upgrades year-on-year is obviously not exciting people any more and these small changes don't really change how people use their phone for normal tasks every day. Apple Intelligence may change that, but probably not. The reality is that people with even a fairly recent iPhone are still good to go after a battery replacement.

I'm somewhat of a hypocrite though because I'm upgrading my 15 Pro Max to a 16 Pro Max, but only because my phone contract allows me to do it for 'free' (yes I realise that in the long run it obviously isn't free). Fresh battery and a fresh year of warranty will be the biggest reason for me.
