It is an insane amount of money but the amount you use smartphones nowadays it's worth it imo. Years ago I wouldn't have flinched spending money upgrading my pc every 2/3 years and this is just the same, hours and hours of use everyday and is essential to pretty much everything we do day to day.

My one annoyance is the storage tiers, they purposefully make the entry level just too small and the next one too big. I had a 64gb 6+ when I wanted 32, now have a 128 7+ when I want 64!

I don't think this really holds water. You upgrade a pc so that you can run the latest games/software else you are limited by your machine. It's a necessary upgrade and so you can justify the price. What do you use your phone for all day that a cheaper phone can't do for you, or an older iPhone if you are stuck on that eco system?

They will keep ramping up the price because people are willing to pay it, not because they have done any changes to justify it.

There are other factors such as:

Samsung's OLED Display Monopoly May Explain iPhone 8's Rumored $1,000 Price

Samsung is one of the only companies able to reliably mass produce OLED displays suitable for Apple's smartphone needs, giving Samsung a monopoly over OLED panel display and allowing the South Korean company to charge high prices.

In a new research note shared with investors this morning, KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says OLED iPhone panel supply is "controlled wholly by Samsung," with Samsung likely charging Apple $120 to $130 per OLED panel module, which is approximately $75 more than the 5.5-inch LCD module price of $45 to $55 for "Plus" sized iPhones.

The high price Apple is currently shelling out for OLED displays explain in part why we're hearing rumors suggesting pricing on the upcoming OLED-equipped "iPhone 8" could start at somewhere right around $1,000 for the entry-level model. Along with an OLED panel, it also uses 3D sensor camera components for facial recognition and many other advanced components that could also add a premium to the price.

OLED displays being provided by a single manufacturer may also explains some of the rumors we've heard about manufacturing difficulties and supply constraints. We're still expecting the new OLED iPhone to be available in limited quantities for several months after its launch.

Kuo says Apple urgently needs to find another company that can supply OLED displays, and Apple is making an effort to do so. Apple is said to be investing billions in LG's OLED smartphone production with the goal of eventually securing 45,000 panels per month for future iPhones starting in 2019.

Apple is also rumored to have purchased OLED display production machinery from a company in Taiwan to research OLED technology in order to cut down on its reliance on Samsung, and there have been rumors pointing towards a partnership with Japan Display.

Until Apple is able to diversify its OLED supply chain, it will be difficult for the company to secure enough inventory at a reasonable enough price to build a full iPhone lineup with OLED panels, which is its ultimate goal for 2018 or 2019. This year, Apple will introduce one OLED iPhone and two iPhones that use standard LCD panels.

Well, had they changed to OLED a few years ago, then capacity and competition would have made alternatives. Also in true apple style, rather then hit their margins for a generation or two they pass it on to the customer. You can buy an S8 for £500, and S8+ for just over £615, so the is no reason it needs to be a grand.

I dont agree with the pricing but come on Samsung Mobile are getting their OLED screens at a much cheaper rate than Apple would be.

And why compare the S8 price now? Rather than at launch it'd make more sense to compare launch prices imo.

I for one hope its not as expensive as the rumours are leading us to believe!

I disagree, you can compare the 7 vs the S8 at the S8 launch but not the 8 to the S8 at launch. It is about what you can buy right now, no what the price was a few months ago. Does anyone actually pay RRP for a Samsung Phone?

Ok, we'll wait until the new Apple phone is released, then compare, not sure how much difference a week will make tbh.

This IMO.

I will quickly don my tin foil hat for a moment, I can not help but think that quite a lot of 'rumours' these days are nothing more than controlled releases from the manufacturer themselves to build hype and get the social media going before the big launch. This used to just be an Apple thing but its just rife now in so many 'tech' products, cars and there are even rumour sites that follow Lego! It's just very clever marketing IMO. The hat is now off.

Saw that last night, just goes to show what a crock of **** Apple are saying that there was less room, they just want to sell proprietary headphones, and extension cables. Legacy ports like 3.5mm jacks need to stay, especially when there is not a unified standard for a digital replacement, had they been using USB Type C connector then it would be more forgivable, but with Lightning connectors it's just a cash grab, pure and simple.

Didn't he remove a component to make it fit? I'm sure he said at the beginning of the video.

Personally I am glad its gone, I use wireless headphones for running and don't think I have ever needed the port, apart from once when I used my free adapter to use it :)

In a word... No! That's a silly price really! Especially considering its rivals on the market. When you can get a Samsung Galaxy J5 for £150 which is a superbly capable smartphone will I get an additional £800 worth of use out of a new IPhone?

I haven't missed my 3.5m jack once and I've had it since release. They gave me a dongle for my wired headphones but I rather just stay wireless.

We all need to move on eventually.

This isn't the thread to discuss it further TBH, but I don't want headphone with batteries (yet another thing to charge and then replace when they degrade) using a proprietary standard is worst thing they could have done, except to line their own pockets. Go buy a set or wireless headphones for £1, not possible, and whether you spend £1000 or that £1 pair, you can plug it into almost any piece of audio equipment with out needing yet another adapter.

If you truly think that they did it to move technology forward, then you are deluded. How much extra waste have Apple generated producing all of those adapters? Fitting the jack would have been more environmentally friendly, very unethical of Apple. Change for the sake of change, is not always the best way forward, but a collaborative effort from the worlds best audio equipment engineers, and other device manufacturers would have been the true way forward. Lighting port will be gone in within 2/2.5 years, I'll eat my hat if it's not, lots of Apple earphones then get binned.

Back on topic, I see that one of the tech sites posted the fact that the high end phone might only have a shipping date towards the beginning of October, due to build difficulties/shortage of supply.

My work phones a J5 its bloody terrible

I will upgrade my 5s (will be 3 years old) to a 6s when this hits the stores. Will be my last iphone unless they put the jack back in. I'd change to another OS now but I'm too lazy to look. There's no way on earth I'd spend more than £600-650 on a phone even for 3 years use, but I am low use with a phone.

£949 is nowhere near worth it. What's a 64GB 7 worth? £599.

What's that extra £350 get you!? Guess we'll find out.

Well it don't get you touch ID! :p

The more I think about it the more I think this release is worth skipping. Seems like they could not get it quite right and it all seems rushed mainly as they are using samsung oled.

Next years (hopefully if the new plant is finished in time) will have LG oled which Apple have invested a lot in and fingers crossed will bring back touch ID.

That alone for me is worth waiting for and my 7+ will do me fine for another year.

I don't want to scan my face every time just pay for something or open an app!

I've heard from a company that gets the dimensions and pricing iPhone 8 64GB starts at £949 256GB £1049 512GB £1149...

Like people are saying the amount of time you actually spend on you're phone it's kinda worth it and if you think iPhone's actually hold there resale value quite well, so you can sell it before the next version is out..

Good Lord!

I wonder what sort of upfront prices and monthly costs the networks are going to offer too, mega money either way. Thinking I'll stick with my iP7+ for now...

I don't think any element is rushed, it's probably been locked in for 12 months.
