How do you sideload? :p

Never done it before.

You need to boot into the stock recovery by:

  • Holding vol down + power
  • Cycle through the options using vol down until recovery is displayed
  • Press the power key
  • Press vol up and power together to bring up the recovery menu
  • Select install via adb
  • Use ADB command given to you by the phone, within a command prompt window on a computer with adb setup

Yup, gifts are usually tax free. I've sent stuff to my friends in Singapore before and the label that you stick on the package will ask you if it's a gift etc. Will be easy at this time of year as well I'm sure.

Had a quick play with an N4 today in the O2 store, couldn't do much with it as it was fixed to a stand so couldn't hold it or see the back.

The screen is nice, on my wallpaper below the screen is a lot less vibrant and saturated compared to my S3, but in normal use the colours are good and balanced. Couldn't check viewing angles though, and the unit was under a bright light.

The phone was fast and smooth, screen seemed responsive enough in my brief usage, no noticeable lack of sensitivity.

Yeah, probably going to ask him to keep the packaging and just send the phone and accessories. Save some shipping cost. Marking it as a gift usually covers you, it's just when ordering from companies that you can run into trouble because they don't like doing it.

They don't mind you doing it, they just want to pay the tax (that legally you should be doing!)
