***The Official LG Nexus 4 Thread***

I don't think the other guy really had his bashed though, it was in his pocket and he turned in his chair, it seemed like there must have been a fault with it to go this easily.

Used it for a few days now.

Fast, very fast. Silky smooth in operation.
Great build quality.
Screen resolution is fantastic, nice big upgrade from the SGS2 in that regard.

Unfortunately I was right earlier in the thread, the black levels are shocking and it is very washed out. If you still haven't decided on which phone to upgrade too I'd seriously recommend going into a shop and having a long play around with a Nexus 4 and the SGS3 or similar before deciding.

If it hadn't been for the fact the handset was so cheap to buy out right and that I've done this to get off contract based phone upgrades to save some cash then I think I'd have sent it back and swapped for an SGS3.

This black levels thing is always going to be down to preference.

Coming from an SG3, I can kind of see what everyone is talking about, but in all honesty, it hasn’t made the slightest bit of difference to me.

For me personally, using it as a reason NOT to get this phone or a reason to send it back, when it has so much else going on for it, I just can’t understand.

I disagree here. My phone for the past 2 years has been a Nexus S with a SuperAMOLED screen. Recently my girlfriend's phone packed up, so I gave her my Nexus S and borrowed another Nexus S from a friend at work.

The Nexus S I have currently has a SLCD panel, and at first I was like you - moaning about blacks and it looking washed out and bla bla bla.

After using it for a week or so, I'm fine with it. The AMOLED screen looks weird and over saturated - bit green at times. An AMOLED screen jumps out at you as "OMG BRIGHT AND SATURATED AND OMG LOOK AT ME!!!!1" but the LCD screens are very good, just they don't 'shout about it' as much.

Other than price and the fact it runs stock Android...what else does it have over an SGS3 for example? Day to day operation they will both feel very similar performance wise.

If they were both the same price it would be difficult for the Nexus 4 to stand out from the crowd in my opinion.

Sorry black should be black...not grey.

Any way, just providing honest feedback for those still not sure and if they believe they will be effected by poor contrast on the Nexus...

Looks! :p

The SGS3 is ugly as sin! :D

horses for courses. The screen on the Nexus 4 is disappointing if what you prefer are the strengths of SAMOLED.

I'd have over-saturated colours over grey blacks and huge contrast shift all day long.

Lol talk yourself out of it with a load of BS. The s2 is a million miles apart on every area to the n4.

Not in every area and you know that. In fact the S2 is a million times better when it comes to replaceable batteries, but thats exaggerating like you are.
It's not a load of BS when, as good as the Nexus is, it would be useless after the battery had run out 3 hours into my walk using Google Tracks. I dont use my phone much for talking, not bothered about the latest spangly OS and would be over protective of the glass back. I really would regret spending £160 to upgrade my S2. If the battery was replaceable it would have swung it.

I love how so many people are talking themselves out of it, just because they've had to wait a week!

Im glad I was waiting. In fact I would have preferred to wait 4 weeks from order so it would give me time to peruse my options. I came down to staying as I am then going for something more suitable to my needs in a few months time. The Nexus 4 will be superseded soon by something that suits me more. It has too many negative points FOR ME to be the next 2 years phone. I don't want to compromise on anything with a new purchase. I want all my old model had, but more or better.

I guess all these people moaning about black levels either have CRT's or Plasma TV's at home so they don't have to deal with the horrible black levels on every LCD ;)

well u do know you can buy 5 x charge battery packs, anyway its fine not to upgrade the fisher price plastic over saturated s2. but shooting down the n4 which is far superior in every way is lame.

im sick of all this black level talk, its an adjustment. and give it 7 days and you will find looking back at the S2 or the Galaxy Nexus for example that you will prefer the N4. that's what i found and same with my mate. I agree at first i thought the same.

I think you'll find when it comes to storage option the S2 spanks the N4 viciously.
Also, arguably, the S2 is less prone to damage from a drop than the N4 with it's glass back.
My S2 which was bought the first day it became available is still working flawlessly, the longevity of the N4 is unknown at this point.

Back to the screen discussion again I see :D :p :o

Lol at the people who are saying that you are wrong for preferring SAMOLED over LCD or vice versa

It is personal preference:

pure whites, natural colours, sharper/clearer, more power efficient on bright colours

VS

true blacks, saturated colours and better viewing angles overall, more power efficient on dark colours

I much prefer the saturated colours of SAMOLED and the way everything just pops out more especially when viewing from an angle.

As for what does the nexus 4 have over the GS 3:

- much better CPU chipset, will there be a huge difference in real world usage though, no idea as I haven't used a nexus 4 yet.... but with my one S S4 version, the device all round feels faster/snappier than a GS 3/note II, gallery thumbnails are loader quicker, some apps and games load quicker as well as game levels, just feels like a more responsive device on the whole and this is with the S running ICS and the GS 3/note II running JB....

Of course that could be due to the software optimisation or just due to having more performance per core, which is more important than an additional 2 cores.

- build and perceived quality

- nexus device so will get updates faster and be guaranteed to get them

- 2GB RAM (GS 3 LTE has 2GB)

Software skin and design is personal preference too, I think the GS 3 is extremely ugly and is the main reason why I haven't got one.

I would consider the nexus 4 to be a massive upgrade from the GS 2:

- better hardware and it is noticeable in real world usage

- I would say the camera is better, certainly no worse (the 1080P recording on the GS 2 is still superb though and better)

- much better build and perceived quality

- better battery life (need to disable a few things though, but once google sort the problems out, the nexus 4 will be one of the best phones for battery life)

- NLED

- much better audio

- nexus device so will get updates faster and be guaranteed to get them

etc.

Essentially the only advantages of the GS 2 are:

- removable battery
- SD slot

And for some:

- screen
- software skin
- design

All comes down to what people value more.

Buying a monitor/TV for some of you must be an absolute nightmare if you worry this much about a phone screen.

They all look pretty good and you can easily get used to any of them, I doubt in reality there is anyone who finds themselves upset that the black levels of their phone screen aren't quite as good as they could be. If you have this problem then you've got some serious issues. :p

Im not shooting it down. I know the N4 is a great phone but not for my needs. My last post said "as good as the Nexus is, it would be useless after the battery had run out 3 hours into my walk". That is probably when I rely on my phone being awake. The N4 would not be suitable in that situation. I have also lost count of the number of times my S2 ran out of battery, usually when I really needed it, before I started carrying a spare battery in my wallet.

Did you have an S2? What did you think of it when you first bought it? It was the best thing ever and had a good feel to it. Nothing anyone could say would put you off it and you would defend and insult everyone who had an older phone would be my guess. Jump forward 18 months. What will you be saying about your N4.

What's that got to do with this thread? Screen choice is down to preference.

It just seems like you're trying to justify not buying the Nexus, when it should be the other way around!

For what its worth, both have their advantages and disadvantages, so just choose whichever.
