***The Official LG Nexus 4 Thread***

Its extremely simple you just have to unlock the bootloader (which is also very easy) and that wipes everything on your phone. If you wish to unlock and flash a kernel here are some links to watch a video.

First you need to unlock the bootloader/root/install clockwork, lucky all done in 1 easy step. Unlock Tool, just watch the youtube video should explain everything.

After that all you need to do is download the Zip file for the kernel, place it in your phone, restart in recovery mode, then select flash zip, sd card, and locate the file. That is all there is too it.

I have found Franco Kernel to offer great battery life and he is really trying to control how the CPU works for gaming and non gaming tasks to optimize for performance, battery life and heat.

All the best and if anything comes up their are many kind people here to help :D.

Thanks for the detailed reply, I'll get on it. Does putting on a new kernel void the warranty ?.

Its relativity easy but if your phone is not already rooted. It will wipe all the data when you root. Head over to XDA to find out how to root.

My drain on idle is about 1% per hour on 3G, less on Wi-Fi. But the culprit could be an app draining your battery.

Yeah my phone isn't rooted so I'll backup my apps first and transfer them to my PC.

The first tool well allow you to re lock the bootloader and you can just flash the stock kernel if you ever need to return the device, but technical it does void the warranty when you unlock the bootloader.

I know its a matter of preference but would anyone recommend a decent case/bumper/sleeve? I've been looking online but its hard to tell how much bulk things add to the phone

My Poetic bumper arrived today and its very nice and doesn't add much bulk, not as much as the official bumper. I don't know if I have received the Rev 1 or 2 as the Rev 1's have been known to come apart. You get a 3 year guarantee anyway.

I'm getting sick of the poor battery return on my phone, 11hrs after unplugging and it was at 79% and I hadn't touched the phone at all. Is putting a custom kernel a relatively easy process ?.

You have logged into all the Google apps on the phone yes?

There's a bug, that if you don't it causes battery drain.

Thanks for the reply, I was thinking I might go for that one too. Does it raise the phone off of a table enough to stop the back getting scratched?

Woot, I ordered on the 10th of December and went on the play store to check my orders, estimated delivery 23rd Januray

Due to your post, I just checked mine (ordered on 5th Dec and recently changed to 2nd Jan and "pre-ordered") and it now shows Shipping estimate: January 16, 2013

Can anyone else with an outstanding order from 4th or 5th please check here , before I get my hopes up too much ;) It appears, on the face of it, the guy who called them up a few posts ago was right when they said there would be shipping e-mails this week.

11hrs and 79% that sounds pretty damn good... you do know the signal is what uses the battery right?

i think they just changed the pre-ordered status to whatever is ur estimated shipping. It is prbbly the same date as the automated shipping question reply. makes it look like something is happening i guess :p

ordered on the 11th and status is now "shipping estimate 30th Jan"
google wallet status still stuck at Dec13 google has received ur order

What do you mean kitch9? Link be great if possible?

ps3ud0

Even if you don't use the log into all the the pre-installed google apps on the phone, by opening them at least once.

Stuff like, Play Music / Movies / Books, Youtube, Maps, ETC ETC. Otherwise they can keep polling the OS.

AMAZEBALLS.

Ordered mine at 8pm on the day the orders started again.... The 4th Dec? It was soo long ago I've forgotten.

Anyway, mine is estimated to ship on January 5th on google play........ Strange as the status was still 'pre-ordered' when I checked this Sunday gone (13th):p:D

No change in Wallet though, last update was them receiving my order on the 6th.

Do you mean January 15th... or possibly February 5th?

Hopefully the former! ;)

Great, I cant log into Youtube at all due to a Google issue regards having a channel assigned to my account (which now already exists). I presume it has to be the app rather than youtube itself as unfortunately its the only platform that doesnt let me sign in :/

Ill make sure to log into everything in the Google folder though as the battery life as you said is atricious so far...

Nope, it's January 5th. So they shipped it before updating the status and it still hasn't arrived at my office :p

I wouldn't mind the former, fingers crossed it arrives in a few days, but no trackng e-mail yet in my gmail inbox.

Still need to sort out a Three SIM and port my number over, but cannot do that until I know for certain the phone is on the way as my old HTC Desire is Orange locked.... Bah!!!!

I ordered same day as you and I've got the same shipping estimate on Google Play store.

I've noticed a few people using a circle battery indicator with the percentage in the middle as in the pic below:

Is that only available in custom ROMs or can I add it to my stock (rooted) phone?

Also are there any ways to replace the signal strength bar with dBm numbers?

Now that the rom scene is maturing nicely for the N4, what is the preferred rom of choice for most people (and why)

I always used to use either Omega or WannamLite on the S3, but towards the end of ownership moved to SuperNexus (as i disliked the bloat and samsungness (!) of the other two)

Xlyon or Codefire, both AOKP based so better than the buggy CM10 roms. Both are fast, feature rich and returns good battery life.

If its battery life your after then its Paranoidandroid, but lacks the features of the above.
