***The Official LG Nexus 4 Thread***

Just ordered a nexus4 from google. My knowledge of android is severely limited, I'm just wondering what I can do with it. What's the deal with these ROMs?

Edit: Also what are the best deals in terms of data, I'm currently with O2 pay as you go and would like to keep my number.

they add more functionality.

my advice to you is unlock the bootloader and root it as soon as you get it using the toolkit over on xda, it literally takes one click and a few seconds to do.

after that do not touch a custom ROM until you are familiar with android and custom ROM's.

the reason why you need to unlock it straight away is it wipes the phone, therefore if you decide to do it 2 months down the line you will lose everything on the phone.

so unlock the bootloader as soon as you open the box and charge it up.

giffgaff is the best, please use my referral if you do order it which is psychosonny

people do this in the sports part of the forum for myprotein and tpw, so im assuming it is allowed here too, as i am not spamming and he asked for info.

Does unlocking the bootloader also void your warranty ?

I'd personally suggest a SIMO from o2, 21 quid a month for unlimited calls /texts/1gb data

pac man ROM as i thought has issues, a certain app which i use daily has no menu bars, they disappear randomly. i guess this is why the developer just basically mods ROM's instead of creating them. with no menu bars i cannot close or get out of the app, i am basically stuck in it forever until i have to reboot.

PA imo is still the best ROM to have by a mile, unless something else offers smaller menu bars?

i bought nova prime as well yesterday, although i am unsure of the best way to use it. has a lot of stuff to tweak but tbh, i have always thought the simpler the better.

anyone know of a decent guide for nova prime? i mean i just want my phone running slick and smooth and just been fiddling with options to try them out so far and tbh i feel like i wasted money tbh, it doesn't really do anything better over stock/custom rom i feel, unless i am missing something.

looks like i will need to move over to PA sooner than i had thought, the app issue is a killer on pacman.

The Nexus phone was born to run PA imo.

And Nova is my launcher of choice. What is has over stock launcher is:

Grid size
scroll animation - love card stack
app animation - I use ICS
Swipe gestures - awesome
overlappable widgets

and so many little tweaks like custom home button action, change app/folder icon, scrollable dock etc

stock launcher is way too limited for me.

Using nova I ended up with not only romming my phone but fully customising now

Using nova I changed grid sizes, and got rid of the app drawer, now I just swipe up on my chrome icon to go into the app drawer

Try xenonHD it's what I tend to use. I try every other room and keep coming back to this one, even from my gnex days.

@oL, thank you, haha yes that was the inspiration

going to stick with PA, the smaller menu bars are the main thing i find useful (phablet mode).

plus there must be a reason why it is the most popular one over all the rest? (it's the best)

Is there a show your mods and how you did it thread here? Its the screenshots above that made me have to try andriod but two things stop me. Im kinda worried Ill kill my phone tickering and once tinkered with new Kernal/ROM etc updates how to maintain it without it being a significant chore

Don't get me wrong PA is a great ROM but that's a bit of a silly way of thinking. Just because something is the most popular doesn't mean it's the best.

Are the top10 best selling albums the best? No

Is Call of Duty the best PC game because it's the most popular? No

Try http://mycolorscreen.com/

There are guides on some of the screens, there is also a youtube channel with some tutorials etc.

Other than that, you need to read up on how to root the phone and install a ROM, once you've done that there is nothing you need to do to maintain it.

I have rooted my phone, installed a ROM and customized it how I like, then left it alone for at least 3 months because I'm happy with how it is. Soon I will fancy a change and I might get a different ROM and tweak it a bit, then leave it for ages again.
