***The Official LG Nexus 4 Thread***

I really don't have an issue with the camera. In low level light it is awful but for everything else I have taken some good pics, however I am not a camera buff so won't know if the photo is good or not. I have a Powershot G10 for real photos. For a phone it serves it's purpose, quick random photos.

as i said above it's probably on par with the GS2, but i have came from a N8 which was the best camera phone ever made until pureview came about and then a HOX, which is supposedly around or better than the GS3 camera wise.

therefore he isn't going to be getting an upgraded camera, it will be similar to his current one, but everything else in the phone is better.

i have found focusing to be the biggest issue of the camera, i hope the nexus 5 has a much better camera tbh, at least on par with the other tech they put in it.

How much of the problems with the camera is down to software and how much down to hardware? Is it possible that afuture update could fix a lot of the issues people are experiencing with focussing, poor low light level performanec etc?

i think it's hardware, as there was some mods on xda, which modified the software and it had zero effect on PQ

Now on Paranoid Rom with Franco Kernel. After trying both, the Nexus Toolkit IMHO is good for the big bang approach and making sure you have backups etc. However for the flashing of ROM's and Kernels I found ROM Manager a much easier and more controlled process. Just install ROM Manager (on a rooted phone). Place the relevant ROM/Kernels etc in the phone.

Install clockwork mod from within the app. Then in the app boot to boot loader, wipe drive, then cache. Install the ROM then Gapps. I then booted up. Then down to boot loader again for the Kernel (but probably didn't need todo that).

Anyway all up and good. Trying to find how in PA I can have the status bar but not the menu buttons....

If you want pie controls and to keep the status bar I think you can do it by going to settings>hyrbid properties>*swipe right to bring up the menu*>interface. In there if you set the nav bar size to zero it should do what you want. There may be a better way but that's the way that I found

For those wondering about the camera, this is a shot I got that I'm pretty pleased with. On the phone its pretty much crystal clear however if you zoom in a large amount it begins to loose its crispness (about when the little guys head fills the phone screen). I'd say its not an awful camera by any means and for my needs its absolutely fine.

Yes this works, took me a while to figure that I needed to be out of full screen mode(which was obvious I know). After I had it on for a while I decide I actually prefer pa 's screen so keeping on full screen.

I think it must be Franco kernel but battery went down as expected to 10 percent and it's now absolutely crawling to :-)

It is such a pity about the camera. For £20 extra for a better unit I would be all over this. As it is, the choice is between this, which my gf has, or the Oppo find 5.

i dont think they intended the camera to work as it does, they must have overlooked something or made something too small, etc.

imo for the money you are paying your getting a phone worth a lot more.

i mean take a look at £100-£200 (brand new) phones and none of them have as good a camera.

the only bad point is the camera is more mid end than high end, everything else is high end, but it is available for mid end pricing.

so your basically getting a phone rated 9/10 for 5/10 money. if you want a 10/10 phone then be prepared to spend £400+

The software is a large reason as to why the camera isn't "great", stock android software optimisation when it comes to the camera has always been poor on nexus devices :(

It doesn't have the best camera hardware anyway but certainly not terrible :p

I don't think the camera is as bad as what a lot of people make it out to be either, some shots that I have seen over at XDA etc. look fantastic.

The main complaint does seem to be the focus and needing to have a steady hand.

Personally for me, not only is picture and video quality important but the UI and features/options to choose from plus how it all works/functions together is just as important and this is where stock android fails big time imo, at first I thought the new UI was very nice but it just isn't easy/practical nor as quick to use as the likes of sense and touchwiz camera apps.

So my phones at the moment are a GS2 as my personal phone and an iphone 5 as a work phone.

To answer a previous question about value for money I completely agree the Nexus 4 is excellent and Google should be heartily applauded for what they have done. However in my case, money is not a prime concern. If there was a £600 that ticked the boxes I would get it as I place an incredibly high value on being able to snap pictures of important moments without necessarily carrying around a standalone camera with me.

I really dont like the iphone 5 (I really really dislike the tiny screen and OS). If only we could get stock android with an iphone 5 camera... The GS4 google edition would be an option but they are not selling it in the UK. I also dont reckon that the GS4 will actually get software updates at the same time as the nexus devices (I think Samsung will be the cause of delays)

i am sure my nexus is possessed, i put it down on the desk and in a few seconds i end up having to catch it from falling, the back must be so smooth it just slides lol

My Nexus 4 just crashed on me for the first time ever. Was playing GolfStar and closed the app as normal, put it to one side (charger in btw) and the screen went darker like it was about to sleep and then screen went dark but could still see backlight. Couldn't turn it on or wake it up.

Had to hard reset it. Weird !

edit: well it's definitely GolfStar as I played it again and as soon as I quit it, the phone crashed again. Uninstall !!

the GS 4 camera on the nexus edition probably won't be as good as the GS 4 running touchwiz since you don't have any of the software processing optimisation from touchwiz, which is largely what makes their camera really good (and same goes for HTC, nokia etc. devices and their software)

IIRC google said that the updates will be provided by themselves and some guy at HTC has said that the updates/software are handled by google for their htc one nexus device.

Sony just announced an Xperia Z Google Edition!... That has an Xmore R 13mp camera and the Bravia Engine. all with a nice big 5" 1080p screen...

But I still like my Nexus 4 :)

The bravia engine won't work with stock android, it is a sony software thing that only works with Sony's gallery/media app, just like the way zoe etc. won't work for the htc one nexus nor will any of the smart stuff, air gestures for the GS 4 nexus edition.

Camera might not be as good as the normal XZ either since Sony rely largely on software processing too. Software optimisation is just as important as the hardware.

Plus personally I think the nexus screen is better "overall" than the xperia Z, nexus 4 has better viewing angles and doesn't look as washed out (supposedly an update has improved those two things somewhat, however, again that update/fix might not be present on the XZ nexus edition), the 1080P res. is only noticeable for browsing/text based stuff.
