***The Official LG Nexus 4 Thread***

Tbh it's this attitude that's held Android back for some people. Some times you have to do this because it looks nice, even if it might slow a process or serve no real purpose. Android designers seem to be realising this now.

Having a CRT off animation for switching the screen off is hardly time wasting or slowing down a process, it's the one time when using your phone that you can afford to play around with animations. It's akin to complaining about a boot up logo or shutting down animation.

If anything android has been trying to save time with minimum inputs. From the lock screen you can; swype to use the camera, pull down notifications and act on them, control media, and from 4.2 swype to widget screens and use the two finger notification pull down menu.

Then there's the dedicated multi-tasking button, quick access LAB thumb controls for the browser which are also coming to the new camera app in 4.2.

Is there not an option an option in stock android to turn off fancy animations like CRT off? With my current phone(Droid Razr) there used to be an option to turn off the animations but when it was updated to ICS the option disappeared?

Not that I'm aware of, it needs to be done with flashable zips.

i know, but sounds like a naff selling routine, having it live on the web site the same day it goes live off the shelve, surely most *die hard fans* would want it on the 13th and not to order it on the 13th and wait a week

I agree. No idea why we can't preorder, and have them deliver it for the 13th! Fingers crossed shops will be selling it SIM free, then we can avoid the inevitable delays :)

Think you might be able to do it in developer options and animation speed.

I didn't actually say it was.

Ah apologies, misinterpreted what you meant there.

Its in developer options somewhere, The one where you can change animation speeds. One of those settings disables CRT.

I'm sure I've read somewhere that the shops may well be selling them SIM free, but at around £100 more than directly from the Play store. I could be wrong though

I believe that the CRT effect is used to mask the fact that when you turn your display on the image buffer has not been refreshed and shows the last frame displayed. For example, if the display turned off at 12:09 and you turned it on at 12:31 it would show 12:09 for a second before redrawing the clock to show 12:31.

With the addition of the CRT effect the last frame shown on the display is the fade to black and hence when you turn it on you do not notice that momentarily the previous frame is displayed (largely because it's an all black frame and your display is, when unlit, black).

It may be that this issue has been worked around in newer Android releases and the CRT effect is kept for the legacy reasons but it was, I am led to believe, originally added for this reason.

Daft question but will this be available sim only or on contracts as well? If so how much monthly is it likely to be? Bearing in the mind the handset seems to be quite a bit cheaper than the current crop of handsets?

Both and you'll get robbed on contract considering how little it can be bought for.
