Just ring Apple and ask to buy Tiger using Education discount; they rarely check so you'll only end up paying £58, if you can prove it then it's a bonus.

Also, it depends on the level of education for the discount you receive.. the further along you are (School.. College... University) then the discount increases respectively.

For Higher Education (Uni) then you can usually work out the price of hardware by looking at the regular retail price, and subtracting the VAT from it.. obviously, the price without VAT is clearly displayed on the site so it's easy to spot.

Not sure about the family pack price, but you could always ring Apple.

HE discount = £58 for single user.

It could well be that you pay £89.. but get the 5x "Family Pack" for the same price as the single user on HE discount.

Covering letter, NUS card, anything that can prove you attend a university of some sorts.

It's just easier to call up and pretend tbh.
 
Thinksecret is reporting 26th October as Leopard release.

I'm betting 6pm (Apple Time) for the official release :D

You release that so long as your within 14 days of the new OS coming out they'll just send you a free upgrade :)

I'm guessing if you ordered on the 25th they'd ship it with Leopard though.


If this is true though, I'll be a happy chappy!! ZFS!!!!
 
Thanks EVH, I've been reading that link and some of the following links from that thread and ZFS seems brilliant!

However, I can't work out if you can boot from a ZFS partition. Would you have to have a boot partition in say HFS then a storage partition in ZFS (and then if you were dual booting with Vista/XP you would need an NTFS aswell) Seems like a lot of partitions all with different file formats and could cause some serious compatibility issues.

Or am I way off the mark?

Very close.. CURRENTLY you cannot boot from ZFS, but it is being worked on.

Some people are saying it would be easy to boot from a bit flash memory then once it's booted switch to ZFS automatically; it's all very untested so I can't see Apple implementing ZFS until 10.5.3 at the least.

The idea behind ZFS is that you have 1 drive (or more), and that drive makes up part of a pool.. once you've created a pool you can add drives willy nilly and the overall size will just increase without actually seeing another drive icon. Think "hot swappable" hard drives.

Other advantages include pool "self-healing", so you won't have to worry about any drives dying because all the data is checksum'd and entirely secure. It would be a case of put a new drive back in and within a few clicks your back to where you started :)

Also, (there are many more advantages) you can have a crazy amount of storage before you run in to any physical limits.
