Oops. I really hope it's not glued together, that'd be awful for cleaning and maintenance.
Take it outside and give it a good puff through or squirt a can of compressed air through it to blow out the dust.

I'd expect the ifixit teardown to appear sometime today, that'll be interesting.

SSD is not soldered and might be user-upgradable.

It's a propitiatory connector and size, so don't get your hopes up for just inserting your typical M.2 in there. But there will be third party upgrade kits that will cost nowhere near as Apple's. There's is a chance that there will also be adapters for M.2->Apple, but they'll have to be angular otherwise the M.2 wouldn't fit inside, so the old iMac adapters wouldn't work.

Or there's enough ports, just get a thunderbolt/usb-c enclosure and use an M2 as external SSD :D

I'm going to bet that the T2 Chip might block something as nice as popping a new SSD in there. But i may be wrong, but it's a very Apple thing to do.

The Studio Display has been released just in time for my Thunderbolt Display to die. The long wait to the 30th begins.

You seen LLT's rant on the Wan Show? lol. The cable is "stuck" on. Well, you can pull it out with extreme force, enough to bend the display before it comes out the first time.

After the new Samsung OLED display with quantum dot, although only 4k, I think that's the one to get.

Max Tech has opened the Studio up, it doesn't look too difficult to access the SSD slot either, although not standard size.

There are two storage slots. From my understanding of Apple's security designs, as long as you keep one Apple SSD in, you can change/add another even if it's third party and it will work. We'll have to wait until someone tries it to confirm though.

Fixed cable is annoying but is a minor point.

There are no other 27" 5K options in the UK (the $1300 LG Ultrafine 5K was discontinued in the UK a while ago). And the only displays at 220ppi or more cost considerably more (Apple XDR or Dell UP3218K), really no competition so it's either this or nothing else. Samsung QD-OLEDs are not comparable, different sizes, resolutions, and much more expensive.

This is why I’m content with my 24” iMac. 4.5K is really quite good on 24”. It’s an interesting thought that you can buy a 24” iMac for £1249 from Apple which is £250 less than the Studio Display.

I know it's not comparable as I already noted it is 4k, I also know the spec of them before you point out specific features, but the Samsung is a newer panel tech, cheaper, arguably a better, more accurate colour screen too. The only thing one would be losing is the resolution which honestly, personally, I rather live with that. I like Apple stuff but I think they missed the mark with this screen. It's the same panel from an old iMac which started at £1799 before, how they took away the computer and charge £1499. Just not good value on many levels.

p.s the Samsung panel I am referring to is $1299. It's in the latest LTT video. By Alienware.

It's this panel I am referring to.

I think even take away the price, the Samsung is a better screen, despite being lower resolution. The fact that it's cheaper, bigger, new tech, makes it even better, not just better value, it is simply better. The Apple screen is not comparable, I mean the Studio Display is nice, but it's not in the same league, the Studio Display can't even do HDR.

Definitely not good value, but if you care about pixel density this is it for you. I work with text all day and I care about text sharpness. So this is what I care about more than anything else. I would take a reasonably priced 6K/8K 32" with even a TN panel in a heartbeat.

No doubt it's an old panel, but it's also very mature with very known advantages and limitations, and very few unknowns. So you know exactly what you're getting. We all know it's reasonably bright, i'a colour accurate, we know the contrast is average, we know it has high response time so awful for gaming.

Do I want Dell, Samsung, LG or ASUS come up with OLED or MiniLED 200+ ppi screens with HDR1000 at 120Hz and more modern panels? Hell yes! But they don't and we're stuck with Apple's overpriced Studio display.

Well this isn't a 4K screen. It's a 34" 3440x1440. So 109ppi. Not just lower resolution, but half the pixel density. This is akin to a 27" 1440p. At $1300 for me this is an immediate no. I know some don't mind 109ppi, I do because I look at text all day. I can only stomach 109ppi if I'm gaming.

And looking outside gamer YouTubers, the reviews aren't glowing at all. It uses a PenTile-like pixel arrangement (so actual perceived resolution is even lower than 109ppi) and there's no subpixel rendering on Windows. People are already complaining about text looking awful on Reddit. Lots of pictures of green quantum dots being visible when looking at white text on dark backgrounds. Question marks exist on longevity, especially with regards to burn-in.

I do see the positive as well. It's amazing in some aspects, it seems like an exciting first-gen product that is going to be massively improved in future revisions. I wouldn't pay $1300 for first gen tech with major issues that I consider deal breakers. In a couple of years these could be awesome though.

I am not going to get this gen's Studio so I can wait for a revision of the Samsung panel but I just can't bare to bring myself to pay £1500 for am Apple monitor that I know they are recycling very old panel tech at THAT price. Knowing the outgoing 17" iMac has it with it for £300 more.

I can't do it, just can't.

Yeah. Painful for me to press the purchase button too :D I like my 27" iMac's screen but needed a faster computer so for me was either pay £1350 (with discount) to stagnate or downgrade my experience.

Only if Apple allowed iMacs to be used as standalone displays like they used to. I wouldn't have needed bought this at all. I could become creative, keep the iMac shell, buy a 5K screen controller and DIY me a monitor out of the iMac but that's too much effort. But if you have an iMac with a working screen this can be arranged for about £200.

This, for me is one of the most frustrating decisions of Apple's in the last however many years - I would have a 24" iMac as my main computer if I could use it as a display for my work Macbook Pro, but I can't.

I can't afford one of the Apple displays, but I still want two 4k monitors, which are cheapish. I'm mainly programming and watching streaming services, so the colour isn't really that important for me. I want three 4k monitors to fit my workflow all in. Does anyone have any recommendations? I will get a Thunderbolt 4 dock, so DisplayPort would be better, but HDMI is an option if I get a dock with two HDMI ports.

Well you can use Airplay to Mac, which isn't as good as a native wired connection, but that still allows you to use the mac as screen for another mac.

There's a good deal on the Huawei Mateview right now (£500 with £100 cashback). It's 28" 3:2 4K (168ppi), has HDMI and USB-C, plays relatively well with macOS, charges the laptop as well. I don't have one personally but we have a few at work and they're pretty decent for programming and the extra height helps too.

How about the Dell S2722QC for £299.98 with code UKS2722QCJAN. USB-C and HDMI and is reviewed well.
