***The Official Manly Shaving Thread***

What did you order George?

Best tip I can give is don't expect the best on the first few times. It's likely you'll approach this the same way you would a mach 3 but the best thing you can do is forget everything you know about that. You don't need to scrape away repeatedly like you do with a mach 3. Just one pass with grain, one pass across grain and maybe one final pass against grain (observe the direction of grain, it won't be the same across your face!) . Absolutely no pressure either, let the weight of the razor do the work, and just go slow or you will cut yourself.

Enjoy

Thanks very much for that, I am grateful. I decided to go for the 'Luxury' items you listed (with a few extras), so I ordered:

Does that all look OK? Anything I forgot?

I am really looking forward to it all arriving. I'm 41 and have been wet shaving since I was 16 (so hopefully I know the way my hair grows by now), but I shall be taking my time for sure.

Thanks to you all for the support and advice. I'll post back after my first shave to let you know how I get on :D

If you can afford it then why not!? I'm very jealous (how sad is that!). I hope you get on alright with it all having spent so much! Would be awful if you didn't agree with it.

Report back on the feather razor, I've heard it's awesome.

With the great advice in this thread and the YT videos I've watched I should be OK. As you say, I am not expecting it to be instantly perfect.

I only ordered that cream because I read someone else post about how nice it was; was that you? Did you have an early evening shave just to try it? :)

It was my first time this evening. You don't need much as its like mousse rather than a block of soap. Missus reckons if I get some of that chocolate shower gel she'll feast on chocolate limes :D

Let us know how the new kit goes, my previous post was surprise on how much you spent for your first time ;) Get a larger selection of blades too, you'll get to know the ones you prefer as there is some trial and error (the bleeding will stop eventually) .

Might treat myself to a new handle next month, currently using Bluebeards Scimitar (centre image of OP) (which is really a rebranded Jagger DE89)

Anyone recommend me a decent straight razor? With brush etc? Standard razers are to hard to cut a neckline with and my electric razor doesn't cut close enough. Thought I'd give the good old straight razor a try. Wanna try and keep the money down then later I'll buy something better if I get on with a straight.

Anybody?

You could try a shavette. They are significantly cheaper than a regular straight razor and would give you the feel for using one and getting the technique right. Dovo are one of the best companies for straight razors. Try this shavette:

Then if you like it, have a look at this straight razor:

Yeah I have my eye on a blue beards revenge starter kit. It's only £34 has everything but some oil. But not to sure about getting a shavette now. Apparently full size straight razors are much better.

So, first DE shave today!

Feather AS-D2 with Feather blade
TOBS Peppermint lathered on the face with Kent silvertip

No cuts! A tentative initial shave. A few learning points. I used too much cream. Having to consider the angle was strange after decades of just getting on with it. I suspect that's a practice thing though. Used the Alum block after, followed by Bluebeard's Revenge.

I loved it :)

What's the best method for cleaning the brush after? Does water temperature matter?

I normally rinse my brush under the tap, give it a shake out to get rid of most of the water then hang it up to dry.

Fantastic kit there by the way.

Ok so I jumped in and took delivery of a few bits and bobs mentioned in the OP. Thought I'd give it a whirl last night as a practise run.
I've gone with a 34c and 10 Astra blades to get me started (waiting on a delivery from Creightons for a cream upgrade)

The good news is that for a 1st effort, I avoided any kind of nicks. I think I was being a little over cautious if anything, my 1st pass didn't really take anything off. I Changed the angle by a few degrees and that made an improvement.

I Only did 2 passes as I didn't want to push my luck but the main thing I noticed was that I didn't get any irritation compared to the usual Fusion jobby I use. Looking forward to improving my skills over time.
