***The Official Manly Shaving Thread***

Would you get more life out of a blade if you flipped it upside down?

Just noticed on the Derby blades, the edges are number 1 through 4.
Maybe they are meant to be reversed.

edit
After a little google, flipping the blade is a generally considered a flippin' waste of time :D

While I doubt the edge will be better after flipping the blade, the non stick coating probably will be.

After shaving with my new fatip this week, I much prefer it to my Edwin jagger. The fatip doesn't clog up with soap and hair, and it's far more efficient.

If you're cutting then either the angle or the force is wrong. Try gliding up with the handle at a right angle to your skin, so the blade isn't touching, and then find the closest angle that shaves.

I find ATG on the neck a very tricky bit, as ATG for me is diagonally left and upwards. Because of the curvature of the neck, it's very tricky to get the angle of the blade as well as the amount of force just right.

I'm still getting to grips with it really, but sometimes I prefer just doing N-S then S-N on the neck rather than WTG then ATG

I was toying with the idea of buying a straight edge razor to use every now and then along with my regular Edwin Jagger DE razor.

However I've ended up buying an adjustable merkur futur and got a free shavette thrown in with it. I'm hoping the shavette should let me experience a straight edge shave without the cost and hassle.

Some of you lot must have very thick or fast growing stubble, one or two passes WTG is enough for me to be clean shaven, particularly with something as sharp as the feather blades.

Talking of the feather blades, I tried a Derby blade today out of curiosity and it's nowhere near as good as the feather. Now that I've got used to the reduced pressure that a feather requires, I find them far easier to shave with. The derby blades definitely tug a little bit and I actually cut myself worse with it than I ever did with the feather.

Agreed. I find I can effortlessly glide feathers over my face with no tugging and a baby smooth finish. As with anything shave related though, YMMV, so it's always suggested to try out a selection of blades.

I can't wait to try some feathers, but I feel like I should give the Derbys a good run. Got 2 packs of them and 2 packs of Astra platinums with my first order, I'd rather get to grips with these then try feathers.

Is there anything that is a halfway between say Derbys and Feathers?

Somebody can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that Astras are halfway between Derbys and Feathers.

I'd say the Astra's are not far off the feathers. I use Astra's now as my main blade. The Derby's I threw in the bin as they did nothing but cause me pain.

I mainly use Astra SP's too, they are very smooth.

The only others I use now and again are Polsilver SI's and 7 O'clock Black or Yellow.

Astra are my main blade and always my fallback no matter how many others I try, I do really like the Sputnik blades though.

I'm going to give med preps and Feathers a spin again, maybe in two years I'm better at shaving now.
