***The Official Manly Shaving Thread***

I started with the Feather blades, then tried the Astras which I found to be noticbly less sharp. Feather razor with a Feather blade for me for the rest of time. Or until I die, whichever comes first.

Bought a Wilkinson Classic on a whim this weekend.
It's not a bad shaver.
Not as 'aggressive' as my Futur and the light weight makes it easy to move the head to get a good angle.
The head is plastic and the handle has some metal in it for balance.
I'm no expert but I would certainly recommend the Wilkinson to anyone just starting out with DE shaving.

The D R Harris soap is better than the Wilkinson stuff I've been using. The lavender smell is barely noticeable and it lathers up nicely.
My new brush (Muhle Synthetic Silvertip Fibre Travel Brush) is nice and soft too compared to the Wilkinson brush.
:D

Somebody can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that Astras are halfway between Derbys and Feathers.

Oh right, perfect

So apparently the missus was a bit stuck on what to get me for our anniversary and went a bit overboard on the shaving gear.

Good Lord!

More pics!

Was back at my parents over the weekend and dug out an old synthetic brush I got as part of a set (with a stand and a mach3 compatible handle) for my 21st a few years ago.

Compared to my best badger brush it's a lot stiffer, smaller and very scratchy. I was expecting the experience to be less pleasurable but the results much the same. It definitely was less pleasurable, requiring me to work harder to get the brush to 'flare' on my face and get a lather going, and the resulting lather was definitely thinner and generated less than my other brush too.

It'll probably remain as an ornamental piece from now on, doesn't even look that nice though

So whilst down in the smoke this weekend decided to call down Jermyn Street where I visited Geo F Trumper's and also Taylor's (also had a hot towel shave in Taylors whilst there).

Found the staff in Trumpers very aloof and stuck up, one of them was talking to the other saying he wasn't a pro in shaving which sort of put me off asking any questions!!!

Bought myself this set from Taylors as well although I opted for the Eton College cream instead as I have the Sandelwood:-

After a couple of weeks in the shower

Varnish is flaking off and wood is discoloured, even through the varnish.
Lid is warping.
I can't be bothered chasing for a refund. It's not worth my time.

Soap is still great though and I will be transferring it to a plastic container with a more secure lid for easier travelling.

I recommend the soap to anyone, but save your pennies and don't bother with the wooden bowl (unless it's a gift for someone)

My D R Harris Almond bowl still looks like it did when i bought it months ago.

I wouldn't have thought a wooden bowl is a good idea in the shower, unless you put some waterproof outdoor varnish on it or something.

I would have thought that the wooden bowl should have been protected against water. It would be in a bathroom, handled by wet hands and subject to water splashes anyway.
I might do something to waterproof it later, if I can be bothered.
As I've already said, I'll be transferring the soap to a plastic container with a more secure lid, for travelling.

Been using Proraso pre-shave for the past 6 months I think (possibly longer). Still half a pot left.
Forgot to pack it when we went away and the shave was nowhere near as good

I have an Edwin Jagger DE89 but after about 2 years the thread on the handle is ruined and takes forever to align and screw back together when changing blades. Bit disappointing.

I bought a cheap Jagen David E01 for £7.99 this week and to be honest its not bad at all.

For the price if anyone needs a cheap starter razor its spot on.

Thanks for all the advice posted here chaps. Going to give DE a try and have just ordered the starter pack suggested. Used MVC10 for 10% off at Shaving Shack. :)

Scorchisio if you're about, are you still using the Shave Secret oil?
