***The Official Manly Shaving Thread***

Blades are personal choice, but favorites for starters are Derby and Astra Platinum, among many others. Proraso shaving cream is very popular and affordable, along with Palmolive shaving sticks (tesco 50p).

DOVO shavettes have a good reputation, parker not so much, and bluebeards revenge is a good affordable option.

Thanks mate!

I'm tempted to buy a dovo bismarck straight razor. Anyone have any experience with one or any other recommendations?

Lack of demand and cost, I suspect.

A bit of both.
Normally when the blade is clamped, it's curved so the sharp edge bends toward the feather.
An adjustable changes the amount the blade is curved. On a low (mild) setting the blade is bent more and the edge is nearer the feather. On a high (aggresive) setting, the blade is flatter and the gap between the edge and the feather is greater.
There is a youtube video that shows this, but I can't remember which.

Found it, from about 4:30 on.

Very interesting, good video. Thanks!

Had a great shave last night, was 3rd or 4th use with my first Derby blade and it performed really well, very happy.

A new thing I tried which seemed to help so thought I'd share, before each pass I made sure my last few lather brushes on each section of face were in the direction that I'd be shaving for that pass e.g. South to North on the cheek when going ATG, to really get the remaining bristles raised. Sounds obvious, but I think it has helped get a really close shave.

Why do you feel you need an adjustable razor? Even the entry level fixed DE razors are fine.

Adjustable is the perfect razor for me ,
slim adjustable:
5 for 1st pass and 2nd pass.
9 for the final pass on my cheeks.
1 for my top lip.
Don't bother with a 3rd pass on my neck.
Anything else and my top lip gets a rash and my swirly haired neck gets weepers and spots
Even though my neck feels bristly to the touch it looks fine in the mirror.so wouldn't go chasing a bbs neck no one can tell.

So I found this site tonight, that mentioned this company. Proper old school by all accounts; anyone tried their products? The pre-shave oil and the shaving cream looks interesting.

I use D R Harris shaving soaps they are top notch, the creams are supposed to be very good as well.

Almond soap is my favourite over all soap (i must have tried 20+ now), i only use D R Harris and Proraso Green now.

I also use the Windsor EDT often, i've seen online people say it smells similar to terre d'hermes.

So, after 2.5 years I've had to buy a new set of blades (just over a tenner). I can't imagine how much more money I would have spent on modern razors.

How often do you guys change blades? I just read a piece on a website where the writer said that he changed his razor blade after every use. That seems a bit excessive to me.
