***The Official Manly Shaving Thread***

Anyone done laser hair removal on the neck? I hate having to shave every day for work so I'm going to get it done to keep my neck and upper cheek areas free

Heh, just noticed this thread. Been DE shaving since forever. Grandad was a Turkish barber. Since i had acne he taught me to shave .

Current set is a muhle badger brush merkur 34 with Derby blades. I'm mainly an Arko man, but some mix with sandalwood ( Taylor of bond) and Proraso.

Tried the whole triple blade stuff, good but really hard on my face.

Enjoy your shaves people.

The Derby blades feel really dull and unresponsive in my shaves imo. I take it as you have Turkish heritage and the Derby blades are Turkish made that this is the reason you use them? I find Astra Platinum and/or the PolSilver Super Iridium are best in my DE89 or Fine Super Slant. Both a fair bit sharper and more aggressive but work well with the milder razor. They require less passes for the same shave than the Derby gave. The Derby just made things uncomfortable having to do multiple passes to achieve the same shave as the Astra or PolSilver.

I tend to shave in the shower so personally found the derby suited. They were my first introduction to DE. (Rip Grandad)
I have Astras and feathers too, but I have a skin complaint so switch accordingly.

Two for the price of one! :D. I still haven't brought myself to plunge at the supposedly scarily sharp DE Feathers the PolSilver are sharp enough!

I have to use an SE Feather for my ONEBlade Core and truth be told you can't feel the blade until it goes dull normally 3 to 4 shaves and it starts to tug badly and is quite unpleasant. Given these blades are expensive I usually reserve shaving with the ONEBlade for when I have 20 or 30 minutes available to Hot Towel my face, whip up a bowl lather with Razorock XXX or Fine American Blend and really take my time to get a zen like experience as a famous YouTube shaver anecdotally states.

Recently I have found myself using a Gilette Mach 3 with the "Start" variant cartridge and Gilette goop from a can for a change of pace and I have to say I have had some mightily impressive shaves. I've had circa 10 shaves out of the head so far and not noticed any tugging or irritation unlike any of the Gilette/Wikinson Sword 5 blade offerings. That is WTG, XTG and ATG. The cartridge just seems to refuse to dull!

The reason to switching to DE shaving was to get away from such bad experiences but now my face seems happy with either method.

I've tried them since my last posts in here, and couldn't really notice much difference from the blade I have "settled" on (Personna Platinum)

I've noticed that since DE shaving, on the odd occasion when I have gone back to cartridge razors, I still get a lot better shave than I ever used to.
I think a lot of it is down to I put a more thought into it (Hadn't got a clue with regards to beard grain before DE), and better prep (e.g. I've still used hot flannel, lots of water and shaving oil prior to "normal" shaving gel) with a cartridge razor.

Was running out my Bluebeards' Revenge shaving cream so have ordered some Proraso Red at the same time as a load more Personnas - will feed back if it's any good.

I agree! Maybe it is the technique that DE gave me whereas before it was kind of the thing to press as hard as you could not letting the cartridge glide and pivot. The actual pre-prep is always done now too! I recently picked up some L'Oreal Men Expert Hydra Sensitive Face Wash with Birch Sap and for an off the shelf - non-artisan product it gives really good pre-wash hydration to the skin - only need an almond sized amount for good coverage.

I have Proraso Green Soap tub and while some may not like the explosion of Eucalyptus and Menthol it certainly has a 'nice' kick in the morning shave for me! :D. The only thing I find with it is the texture of the soap gets little clumps. It may be something to do with the swirling of the wet brush on it and then when drying out clumps up a bit but doesn't affect the performance. For me the Proraso needs water to get the slickness and it is quite tolerant unlike artisan soaps like the Razorock XXX.

Guys who use feathers: where do you buy them from? Eager to find some at a good price, but read a few things about potential counterfeit blades. I can see them for sale in lots of reputable places for £3.50 for 10, but that's quite a step up over the Astras I can get for £11.57 for 100. Is there anywhere that's definitely legit for closer t 20p per blade?

Grabbed a merkur 34c and when I got it i realised they sent me the short version by mistake.

Sending it back and now ordered a Merkur Progress.

Also have ordered a Qshave (futur clone) from far east for £7. Thought I’d give that a try too.

There's mountains of comment on the cheap Futur Clone

I have one. I quite like it, but even opened right up it's not aggressive enough for my wiry white whiskers.

I routinely use an R41 with a Feather Blade

And I have a sturdy stainless handle.

Good luck with the Merkur Progress - lots of folk like it.

I buy my Feathers from Connaught

I too find the feathers the sharpest, give a really nice shave, albeit i do get minor cuts.

I'm trying the Astra SP blades right now,, they seem OK for me.

If you want a step between the Astra SP and the Feathers, try the PolSilver Super Iridium blades. They're very good! Such a shame Gillette have shut the brand down, although they're still plentiful in supply.

Just bought a few tester packs of the Polsilver off the back of this recommendation as really like the Astras but would like to try something even sharper.

They're a superb blade imo. I've managed 8 to 10 shaves out of the PolSilver before it started to feel like it was going dull - flipped the blade each time to make sure the bevel on the blade was kept as even as possible.

FWIW I have quite a heavy and wiry beard growth too.

Let me know how you get on with them.

Have you got a link for the Qshave please?

Have you got a link for the Qshave please?

sent you a trust mate, sorry, it was £9 when converted into Pounds.

Would've thought people would be more inclined at looking at the Parker Variant or the Rockwell 6s/c.

Both razors I'd love to add to the collection.

Shawrey

i was looking at the Variant and the the Progress, reason why i choice the Progress was the price really.
