***The Official Manly Shaving Thread***

Was in Rome at the weekend and bought a huge can of Proraso Green foam (couldn't find any soap in any of the pharmacies which is a shame as I'd have got a few tubs) for 2 euros, it's actually really good and better than I remember canned foam to be (been using a brush and creams for 6+ years).

Today's vintage shave. Any guesses on the Razor?

Liked the sound of what I read in here and fancied a change from my Merkur 33C so got a Qshave for my birthday so gave it a go the other night. Feels extremely well made for the price, I hope that means it lasts.

A very different shave from the merkur, had to play about with angle of approach and finding where the blade is in relation to the edge of the shield. Tried adjusting the aggressiveness and could definitely notice a big difference, will take a few shave to work out what works best.

I got one couple of years ago. I used it about 3 times and haven't since. Was quite fun but it is a bit of a novelty, if anything it just convinced me I really don't need a straight razor. Unless I want to splash out on an even bigger novelty.

I think it's seen as the hardest way to shave, even more challenging than a straight. It's more convenient obvs when it comes to blades, but is completely and utterly unforgiving with even the tiniest mistake. Damn now I want to give it a go again.

I'm fancying adding a Shavette to my collection and keep finding myself looking at the Dovo Shavette.

Anyone on here with one?

I got the Bluebeards revenge one, used it 3 or 4 times and gave up, looks like Freddy Krueger had a go at me everytime I used it.

My missus uses it to shave the back of my neck everytime I cut my hair so it does get a bit of use.

Someone did say to me though that they're usually better for someone else to use on you rather than use yourself.

Second go with the Qshave last night, really liked it. First shave was somewhere between a SAS and CCS, this was well into DFS territory, only drawback being a couple of small nicks. On setting 4, seemed a nice step up in aggression to the Merkur.

Yeah absolutely - I've got one but rarely use it on myself - can actually get a phenomenal shave from it but its way too awkward and time consuming to do so other than for incidental tidying up, etc.

I use the yellow Proraso shaving foam in a can and I love it. In fact, I haven't lathered using a brush and cream/soap for some considerable time.

Got my Futur clone today... Too eager to try it, didn't even take a photo. Jumped right into a shower and shave. Started on mildest setting.

Found it much easier going than my usual disposables, but ended up with a lot more shredded face. Guess that happens when blades are actually sharp! I'd say 6.5/10 for quality of end result, 7/10 for shave comfort. Versus 7 for both with my usual razors.

Kinda scary getting used to a new razor, I've been using cheap disposable single or double blades for years now. Looking forward to getting more practise!

Pre-shave prep is the key to reducing the Freddy Krueger look!

1) I find a wash with a hot towel and a good hydrating wash such as L'Oreal Men Expert Barber Club cleans and hydrates the skin as a good start.

2) 'Map' your face out by running the palms of your hands with, across and against the grain to see which direction the hair grows in each area of your face. This is important for insuring you are shaving the hair down in stages which will reduce the chance of irritation and nicks.

3) Take your time to find the angle for your face which is typically its around a 30 degrees angle. Try holding the razor at the base with your finger tips and using no pressure - just the weight of the razor and let it glide slowly on your face.

4) Keep a styptic pencil close by to seal up any minor nicks or cuts. When you've finished shaving, shock the pours on your face shut with cold water and gently pass an alum block over your face. You'll feel a slight sting where you've shaved too close or had a minor abrasion.

The whole shaving process should take around 15 - 20 minutes to get each stage down although I can do the whole thing in under 10 minutes now.

I often like shaving with my Merkur DE in the shower, but I didn't think about doing it in the shower without at least 30 shaves with a mirror first. My first one with my future clone the other day was hard enough at the sink in front of the mirror, I won't be taking it into the shower for a few months, it's just too important to get to know the razor and the angles you need to use first, which can only be done looking in a mirror. Not surprised you cut yourself!

Paha, I’ve had my DE for what feels like the best part of a year and I’m not taking it into the shower. Sod that. I no longer catch myself anymore but I don’t fancy risking it.

What does everyone use preshave? I had a sample of something from Edwin Jagger that I liked but open to try stuff, anything with aloe is a win in my books as my skin loves that.
