The Official Microsoft Flight Thread

I feel sad, I actually enjoyed the video game aspect of it and it was light on the sim side but as a video game, it wasn't as bad as it's been made out to be.

And runs rather well all on max.

lol don't feel sad. Good that you posted enjoying the game side.
And for trying it :)
There are a lot of hardcore simmers on the AVSIM forum saying they like it for what it is & can see good things comming from it.

Unlike the ones that saying I am not even going to try it.

It is a grower the more you play the more you get to enjoy it.

The joys of Games for Windows Marketplace.

Here is a post from a Dev on the beta forums, so here I am passing on the love :p

Hi everyone! We've been hearing that people are getting asked for a product key when they try to log into LIVE and use Flight.

Here's a workaround -- if you run across other people having this problem, please pass it on. Thanks! :-)

Because Microsoft Flight is Free-to-Play when you sign-into LIVE for the first time through Flight a product key should be auto assigned to you. However we have noticed that some users are not getting their key auto assigned and are seeing a message asking them to enter a valid product key for the game. Here are some steps to take if you run into this issue:

Close down Flight
Re-launch the game
Attempt to sign-in again
If there is a 5x5 key already entered into the product key window just click ‘I accept’ and then the ‘Submit’ button. This should log you in. If that still does not give you a valid product key do the following to manually retrieve a key:

Go to http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/Product/Microsoft-Flight/66acd000-77fe-1000-9115-d8044d5308d2
Click the ‘Buy Game FREE’ button
Select ‘Confirm Purchase’ (this is a free transaction and won’t cost anything)
Open up the Games for Windows Marketplace Client on your PC (found under Start->All programs->Games for Windows Marketplace)
Sign into the Marketplace Client with your GFWL / Xbox LIVE account
Click the ‘Downloads’ tab
Click ‘Microsoft Flight’ from the list
Click ‘View Game Keys’
Copy the ‘LIVE Access Code’
Open Flight
Sign-in again
If still asked for a Product Code, enter the LIVE Access Code you copied in step 9
Click ‘I accept’ and ‘Submit’

Some interesting comments on facebook. Not too many happy bunnies!

LOTS of unhappy bunnies.
But I can't blame them, I am so lucky as in I never got into FSX as I only started playing it last year.
But if I was like a lot of simmers & had been playing for the last 10-20 years I am sure I would feel the same way.

Someone even posted a 'dislikes' on my youtube videos :D

Had a short go on this today, seems ok for free but I wouldn't pay what they want for the dlc. Graphics were unimpressive running at max quality, although I only have a 1280x768 screen atm since my 24" dell went byebye.

If this platform is a good base for MS to develop into a full simulator then I'm happy enough. I am not even going to bother installing it. Maybe some day!

Here are screen shots to show why there are neat rows & rows of little trees.
And why the Cook pines look so tall next to them.

In game image and then a real life image of the same part.

trees2.jpg

trees3.jpg

In the above image you can see all of the small trees in neat rows that are the plantations to the right of the town.
Same as the in game image.

Next is a image of the same part but as the neat rows of trees end & meet up with forset of tress that are not in rows.
Below the right wing you can see a row of Cook pines. In game the trees sway in the wind.
In the first two images at the bottom you can see that the little ditch/cutting.... has been modeled aswell.
All very life like & all for free.

The big sticking point for you at the moment is the no 3PD input.
When it comes to the advanced systems of the planes you enjoy flying, I can't see MS making planes like that not without 3PD doing it for them.

In the flight.CFG file there are some hints of whats to come.

Code:
[Traffic]
AirlineDensity=0
GADensity=0
RoadDensity=0
ShipsAndFerriesDensity=0
BoatDensity=0
IFROnly=False
AirportDensity=0

Had ten minutes on this. Was quite good for free, to be honest though I only really downloaded it as something to play with my kids using a controller.

@ garsands - thanks for those screenshots :)

I dunno, I cant judge this until Ive got it but the problem (in a good way!) that I have is that my FSX is so extremely blinged up with REX 2, Orbx etc. that it makes Flight look like Just Cause 2!

So Im in no rush to download this ATM. Interesting to see peoples reactions to it though. One things for sure. FSXs future is safe!

For me FSX with REX 2, Orbx etc looks better & feels much more at home feeling.
But then I get the 20-35 fps & I just can't live with that.

With FSX I was a low & slow flyer & I was just flying around a small part of australian & to make it look nice I paid over £150.

If you can live with FSX then don't think about Flight as FSX does more.
But I just can't live with the 20-35FPS so for me it's only flight.

Then now & again Flight will look just like orbx nice bright & crisp.
With flight I find the planes get hit harder with the wind sometime your jumping all over the place FSX never did that when I used it.

@ garsands - what rez are you running FSX at? As long as FSX is running smooth with very few stutters then it should be playable. The only stutters I get appear during replays...which is annoying.

I heard Aerosoft are working on a sim but havent been checking to see how far along they are.

In the meantime Flight can do no harm. Hey if it sparks interest in aviation who can fault it!

Downloaded it, played it but can't make up my mind with it yet.
Now for 3D vision though it does look the part and those runway lights are just hunky dory in 3d, no strange effects like in FSX.

Well, I was starting to have some fun, but then the game decided I should be stuck in fly-by camera view (no matter what plane/mission/etc), and the lack of verify files option means I'm reinstalling to try and fix it. Hmmm

EDIT: had to delete the flight.cfg file to let it rebuild in the end, which meant reflying all the missions I had completed :/

Samething happend to my strange how it never happend in the beta to anyone, but it happens now in the release.
I dont like having to do the first two missions first time round let alone a second time.

Here is a fix that keeps your profile.

Instead of deleting the .cfg file, remove everything except:

[GFWL]
ProfileMode=1

@ garsands - what rez are you running FSX at?.....

I was running FSX at 2560x1440.

My monitor is a Dell U2711 it does not down scale well at 1920x1080 it looks all dull.

To power this rez my system is-
CPU i7920 @4.1 GHz
6GB Ram
2 x EVGA classified GTX580 3MB < not O/C no need to at the moment.
Harddrives are SSD

This system plays all my games maxed out at that rez with added settings using nvidiaInspector without any problems. I think a bench mark game at the moment is Metro2033 I have finshed it maxed out without any slow down in FPS.
FSX is the only game that it does not run well with.
The weak part for FSX is my CPU but the next best on air would be 5GHz but I would need something more like 7GHz CPU before I would even think about upgrading just for FSX.
For the £500+ it would cost I could buy lots of new DLC for Flight & still play all the other new games maxed out.

I like to play my games at max settings all the time. So if a game offers me the option to have 30 AI planes in the air then I want 30 planes in the air.
As I used REX 2, Orbx I have to have all setting on high to get the full detail out of it.
If I need to buy better gear then I will, I will get the best that money can buy but at the moment there is not a 7GHz min CPU for me to buy.

The last staw for me with FSX was at xmas I bought Orbx Melbourne loaded it up with AI Traffic & all the works & every time it would crash my PC, if I dropped the detail settings if would be fine, but I know I am missing lots of extra detail that's there but I can't run it & I have paid for it.
I had already run this program before hand
http://www.venetubo.com/fsx.html

I had also used these settings http://http://forum.avsim.net/topic/324786-nvidia-configuration-guide-inspector-2xxxx-drivers-version-20-explanations-of-all-settings/

I fully understand that the nvidiaInspector settings was the big killer of FPS but I was using the RealAir Turbine duke payware plane, without the extra settings the HD cockpt would have shimmering around the dials all the time.

I really liked FSX I have nothing against it as a program it's just the low stop & go FPS that I can't live with. I have a good powerful system that runs other new games maxed out fine.

I think it's a good game, love the graphics, but I'd rather pay £40 and have loads of planes and all the world on it, very disappointed in Microsoft for going down the "free" route...

OK.
Gave it try, and, much like an Essex girl, very pretty, but absolutley nothing beneath the surface.

FSX may be a bloated fat old girl, but shes much more interesting to spend time with, and when you make her do her makeup right, shes not that bad looking.

More seriously. Scenery was gorgeous. Why the hell didn't they just re-release FSX with these looks, we all would have bought it again. Aircraft I thought werent much better than some freeware aircraft for FSX. 1 or 2 little things I liked, the mouse control for looking and clicking switches in the virtual cockpit seemed a lot nicer than it works in FSX. Didn't like the flight model at all, put the weather to its nastiest, and it still felt like flying on a clear day. Just felt very uninvolving and to easy.

I think I can see what MS was thinking when they went down this route, but I think they've made a massive mistake. Surely the casual sort of flyer to who Flight appeals to isnt the type whos going to want to pay £1000's for payware over the years. The sort of person who will pay that and more for quality payware is surely going to want a deeper sim than this?

All in all. Meh.
