The Official Microsoft Flight Thread

FSX is a simulator, Flight is a game. Simple, couldn't have felt more let down when I first saw that gorish trailer.

I 100% agree.

MS are not even marketing MS Flight as a simulator.

In there Q&A they call it a game.

Q: What is "Microsoft Flight?"

A: "Microsoft Flight" is a new PC game from Microsoft Game Studios.

There is not even the word simulator in the games name.

The hardcore FSX fans seem to have been under a huge misunderstanding that this was going to be a new simulator for them.

It's a GAME a simple non hardcore flying GAME.
For people who don't want to have to learn what 50+ swiches & dials do before they can takeoff.

The hardcore FSX fans seem to find this so very hard to understand that there are people out there that don't want to learn all of those things & don't want to fly a 747 how ever many 10,000's of feet in the air.

And they feel the need to call such people Kids ect ect.

Never mind the fact that MS Flight could be the steping stone for many new user moving then on to FSX, just as they don't mind the shock of dropping to 30fps or even 20fps if they want to get anywhere close to how MS Flight looks.

But one thing that has come from the beta forums from real pilots is that MS Flight planes model as in they way they behave in the sky is far for realistic then what FSX offers.
The wind & turbulence effects on the planes are also much more realistic.

Anyone here with access to the beta forums can confirm this.
The big uproar on forums is from FSX hardcore fans as the GAME is not for them.

But again it's free so anyone can try it.

I am not saying anyone is going to like it nor am I trying to make anyone like it.

Never seen a game that so many people don't like before they have even played it.

I think FSX flight modelling is ok - but never has felt like you are really flying an aircraft

only game I've played that gives that feeling of real flight is DCS A10

Due to NDA can't say but there are some clues in the youtube video.

@ 3.05 - 3.30 when the chap says about flight giving you the experience of flying & not the act of flying.

The experience of flying is the flight modelling to give you the real life feeling.
The act of flying that it does not give you is the 50+ switchs ect you need to do to take off.

With a smaller plane you don't have 50+ swiches you don't need to do much (the act) to get it off the ground.

But if you want to know what a real plane feels like to fly in real life (the experience of flying) then Flight will give you this.

At the start of the 3.05 - 3.20 the chap from Icon tells you that they worked closely with MS to get the Icon to behave the same in game as it does in real life.

Yep, there are just a few: DCS A10, DCS Ka50, Lockon Flaming Cliffs (But only the SU25 plane) and last but not least - Rise of Flight.
All four have been designed using some "solid body dynamics" approach.

To be honest, the same marketing fluff is printed on all flight sims ' boxes ;) One can not such descriptions any more. It's like "100% quality" printed on apple juice carton to make people confuse it with "100% pure juice" :D

But this juice carton does not cost you anything to see for yourself.
On the 29th of feb so no risk, if the juice leaves a bad taste in your mouth you have lost nothing.

True. Keep forgetting that its free to play :p
Hope its not 15gb download or something silly like that though:)

I just wanted to say a few things as I've been browsing this forum for years and never really posted:

We don't live in a one-size-fits-all society which unfortunately is what the gaming market is turning into. I have watched over the past 10 years some of the biggest and best sand-box simulation games turn into pew-pew games for all the kiddies at home on their Xbox to play on filled with mass consolitise. There is absolutely no replay value, linear paths/storylines, and the game telling you exactly where to go and what to do holding your hand.

Microsoft Flight Simulator is only one of...half a dozen true sandbox that are even left in the PC industry and now it looks like that’s gone for good and they may as well just included an Xbox controller with the game. I realize MS Flight was not made for the hardcore simulation enthusiasts but there are DOZENS of alternatives for every type of simulation game that come out EVERY year unlike TRUE simulations which only come out every 5-10 years if we're lucky. Taking away one of the last few "true hardcore PC games" and turning it into a console game makes people like myself a really sad panda for having a $5000 computer system when these games are designed for $250 Xbox.

Here's an example incase you don't follow:

True PC Hardcore Sandbox Game:

Arma 2: Dropped onto an island with hundreds of square miles of terrain and can go anywhere on it. Can do any means possible to acquire hundreds of different types of tanks, planes, guns, cars, etc all realistically modeled and simulated and can accomplish your mission in any means you chose fit. Oh and you die in a few hits so you actually have consequences for your actions.

CoD: pew pew pew go do this one path pew pew pew. *get shot 100 times, health regenerates back to full in 10 seconds* pew pew pew. Get in a car and drive one path. mission accomplished.

Ok, lets get back on topic with Flight then:

Flight Simulator X:
Fly to 22,000 airports in a world that is on a 1:1 scale. See every single city in the world. Fly dozens of aircraft or better yet, downloads thousands more online. Everything is realistic and REAL pilots can actually truly play the game and enjoy it. You also have consequences for your actions. Can fly anywhere, can do anything. Can see anything, can download anything. Can make anything for FSX.

Microsoft Flight:
Flying car simulator on the island of Hawaii. 1/10000000000 of what FSX was. Oh, pay $50000 worth of DLC's and maybe it will be 1/10000000 of what FSX is. No more things to download anymore for free or make yourself.

Another good game bites the dust. If you're wondering garsands why everyone in this forum is against you and you're a 1 man army, it's because of what I said above. I can make a list of over 50 flying games that have come out since FSX was released (2006 I believe?) which kiddie 10 year olds can play (and probably enjoy a lot more than Flight) and we're told to bend over and take it when the ONLY true sandbox flight simulation we had that we could turn to when we didn't want to shoot down Migs with 1000000 missiles turned into yet again a kiddie console game.

I'd rather (far far rather) have one "very high quality" area to fly around in than a huge expanse of "dullness"

and I'm not just talking photorealistic scenery - yes I'vegot loads of that for FSX - but its only fine at certain heights/angles - as soon as you get low,or near an airport it tends to look dreadful:(

Seyumi,
You will still have FSX they are taking it away from you. It's not gone for good.
You can still play it on your $5000 computer.

MS Flight is not a console game it would not work on the xbox.

We couldn't be doing half the things we do here on a console - this is not a console game that just happens to sit on a PC. This is really a PC game and we're proud of that.

You sill need a high end PC to play flight at Max settings so a $5000 PC is still not wasted.

On a nice high-end machine, you set all the settings to high, and it becomes really, really beautiful.

And as for my one man army I think you will find the poster above me is looking forward to MS Flight.
So you can take away your 'everyone in this forum is against you'

I am just clearing up the lies that posters seem to feel the need to say about MS Flight.

I am not trying to make anyone like MS flight, I am just fixing the lies that the ones who are trying to make people hate MS flight before it's even been released.

By your post you are making it sound like that on the 29th of feb FSX is going to stop working. With your 'Another good game bites the dust.' well I have good news for you on the 1st of March FSX wil still work fine for you.

I am not wondering at all why some on this forum is against MS Flight, you are against it because it was not the new replacement FSX.

The only thing I was wondering is why lots of people feel the need to put new players off flight.

But it seems MS already knew that the hardcore FSX fans where going to try & do this,
what a nice ace card MS have played there by making the basic content FREE, that's a nice, no time limit, play as much as you like & see for yourself content, that even teaches the user how to fly all for free.

That must be a extra pain for the ones who are telling new users things like you are put in a plane with no cockpit to learn how to fly.

Sorry for sounding so harsh garsands it's just that it was hard to read through the 50 pages of wall-o-text through everyone bashing each other and it looks like everyone else had the same views as I did against you. Anyway...

Yes FSX isn't going away but it would be nice to have an updated and improved system. The game runs like garbage (even on a $5000 computer) and seeing as this might be the last true flight simulator game it going to be a hard pill to swallow. It’s not fair we have to play an old game and will only get older as time goes on. Just because I liked the original Duke Nukem on MS DOS, doesn’t mean I should be forced to still play it because the new one was complete garbage.

Also don't forget, NOTHING in this world is free (at least not in America, probably the same in the UK) if you think you're getting a good deal with a coupon or some buy one get one free deal, it's because they have already factored in the % of people who actually use coupons and raise the prices accordingly so it all evens out.

I wouldn't be surprised if pretty soon you will have to sit through 30 second advertisements just to play flight and even have in-game advertisements. (Youtube anyone?) Even the flying car is nothing but a marketing gimmick. They are hoping that a few people who play MS Flight and like that plane will go out and buy one whenever it gets released (obviously if they had the $) it's already begun and it's only going to get worse trust me.

Only 2 days away now from launch.

Looking around the flight sim community over the last few days, I have noticed somewhat of a shift in simmers attitude to Flight.

It seems as though people are warming to it after initial scepticism. I wasn't lucky to enough to get in on the beta, but those that did are reacting quite positively. I am now definitely looking forward to it more than I was.

Got a feeling we could be pleasantly surprised come Wednesday.

Its free to download and play. I'll be doing that. I'm not losing anything in doing so.

I'm approaching this with an open attitude. I don't judge a book by its cover without first reading it.

What is free to play? :D

Love Flight sims, had FS2004 and loved it, but cba to spend money on FSX and have it run crap :/
