*** The Official Microsoft Surface Thread ***

I'm thinking of buying a Surface Pro 3 as my main computer. At home, I would like to hook it up to an external monitor (or even two), being able to use both the Surface's screen and the external monitors at the same time. Would this be possible?

Thanks

Yes, SP3 has a mini display port, you can get cheap adaptors to HDMI, DVI or VGA.

If you use the displayport you can daisy chain displayport monitors.

Or buy the MS dock £165 for an extra display port and gigabit Ethernet.

MS have charged me for my Keyboard, on the 25/08/2014.

Hope it arrives on Thursday.

Dark blue for me.

EDIT: Now have shipping confirmation with UPS.

Keyboard arrived :)

It is the new dark blue colour.

Much improved over the old version, the second position really strengthens the desk. Trackpad is now usable.

Anyone else due to get a SP3 today?

Im getting really tempted looking at jsut a lower end or even a mid range one.

I think its pretty amazing value for money in some ways.

Okay could nearly click on it now, looking at the i5 256gb 8gb ram.

Am I right seeing there is no sound digital output?...even with the dock?

Though im in no hurry, but the thought of working on one of these for graphics and music stuff is soo tempting.

Mines here :D

Had it sat whirring away doing updates for a while and it got hot but didnt overheat.
i7, 8gb, 256Gb, dock on order just waiting for that to arrive as well then we're sorted.

I'm already ordered the Snugg case that I had for the Pro 2 but the Pro 3 version.

So far the only thing that I dont like is the fact you cant clip the pen to the side of it anymore, this will lead to lost pens I should imagine..
You also cant twiddle the pen, anyone that has a normal pen will twiddle and click it when your holding it but not actually using it, this, you cant do as it brings up OneNote lol..

Interested in how how it gets if you push it with gaming or encoding or similar.

Trying to justify the increased price but the temperature issues are concerning.

Got mine yesterday (via quidco and student discount). Not done much beyond initial set up, but so far very, very impressed with build quality and (unbelievably) windows 8.1 and even internet explorer! Pen and one note look really promising too.

My second one arrived. :)

I liked the first one so much, I ordered one with 8GB Ram to replace more hardware.

Nothing wrong with the 4GB version, performance is decent but heavier multi-tasking will be easier.

Going to order the dock and make a full switch to Surface for everything.

Before anyone asks, you can't have the old one :D. Selling it to a friend.

Well since yesterday I've pretty much not put it down as I have been dropping all my apps etc on it.
When you push it the fans kick in pretty often, I haven't put Diablo3 on it yet but will do later, maybe even Steam as well lol.

The device is nice, its a bit cumbersome to use as a tablet due to the extra size, I dont think, personally, it matters how light or thin it is, as a tablet it is too big, but I kind of knew it would be anyways as I have had the RT/Pro/Pro 2 and a Samsung 11.6" unit before this and for me the iPad at 9" and the original Surface's at 10.whatever are as large as you would want to go.

The screen, Oh my its lush, I will be getting a non-glare cover for it though as it picks up fingerprints really easily and when angled at the desk it picks up the lights too much.

Pen, people will lose these, yes you get a stick on tab with your keyboard so you can put it with that, with it being stick on you can put it whichever side and wherever suits you, for me though it feels like a bit of an after thought, and if you are using it as a tablet, you'll want the pen, if its only proper storage place is the keyboard, well, that's why its an after thought for me, it really should clip to the device, you can kinda hold it on the side where the power slots magnets are but its not strong enough or secure enough compared to previous versions, imho they could have at least created a small recess but given they have moved the USB from the left side to the right side of the unit there is no longer room.

Speakers, massive improvement now they are actually forward facing.

Home button, they have moved it due to the keyboard having the extra magnetic strip and sitting on the bottom of the device, so they didnt really get much choice but to move it.
However, with the keyboard on its now not as easy to close apps by dragging them to the bottom of the screen because the keyboard is there.

Kickstand, sooo much better than I was expecting.

MicroSD card slot, not so impressed with this, they have moved it from where it say on the Pro/2 which in itself isn't an issue given they have moved all of the connectors to the right side, however, it is now just pushed in, there is no press to release, you can just pull/push it in/out, while the device is new all of the gaps are tight, if you swap cards a lot then I can see this being an issue.

Over all its not a bad bit of kit, if you have a Pro2 then its not much of an upgrade unless you really need the extra power the i7 gives you or really need that extra screen real estate, if I were coming from a laptop or something else then I'd probably be more impressed but having had the previous Surface Pro and Pro 2 there are a few things that have changed I'm not so thrilled about.

Have got a dock on order (as well as another Pro3 i5/8/256 for one of the guys here funnily enough replacing his MBA) as well as the larger version of the Snugg case I have so we'll see how it is after the next batch of updates which apparently target the i7's heating issues...

Anyone have anything specific they want me to run over with it let me know..

Not too hot to touch no.

Going to grab the Intel XTU app and see what the CPU is doing and see if its throttling, its been upto 3.1Ghz so far, not seen any higher, that was yesterday when it was installing updates...

Both the i5 and i7 are 15W TDP chips. Shouldn't really be any difference in heat output.

My Surface Pro original with a 17W CPU gets slightly warm to the touch at the back, but it's no worse than any of my MacBook Pros have been.
