*** The Official Microsoft Surface Thread ***

Would seem right, they raised a ton of money to get it on WP/ RT etc, and they have taken years on it, personally find them a bit of a joke how they have taken this long.

I like them, it really does depend on what you want though, and for the cost do you really need the 512Gb of space?
I find myself using the device itself for working and then a 64Gb mSD card for storing my ISO images and other bits on...

Its a good compromise

Depends what you're looking to use it for

Document writing
Writing MatLab programs
Setting up CFD simulations (perhaps not running them)
Remote desktop to my work machine
Internet and e-mails
Sitting on the sofa and surfing the web, and writing documents (I hope the kick stand is good)
Gaming if it can handle it

I have the i5 256gb

For your usage you would need the keyboard to go with it , its a decent enough keyboard although I'm not sure how you'd get on if typing for expended periods , but it does me for occasional use

I love surfing on it and I've not used my iPad since getting it, I find some tablets limited due to the OS but this runs windows 8.1 pro so gives you tons of control

I don't play many games but I've tried halflife2 which ran ok at high settings but some of the newer games will struggle

Battery life is decent but will drain quickly when doing intensive tasks, but that's pretty much the same for most laptops, for general browsing and lite work it should last most of the day

I'd much rather use a surface than a full laptop as its smaller, lighter and can be nearly as powerfull

I want to get a basic surface for my wife. RT as she is a very light user and has an offcast alienware laptop of mine for heavier uese. The 32gb surface 2 is out of stock with MS, is that because a Surface 3 RT is inbound?

I am a bit out of the loop and my Surface 1 pro is still treating me well(ish)

No rumors of a Surface 3 RT as far as i'm aware. If a new RT version does come out i would think it would be next year although i'm wondering if there will ever be one.

Given there are now tablets running full windows 8.1 for under £200 I can't see much market for the RT anymore.

I would imagine it would be more likely that when the Surface Pro 4 comes out they will also announce a Surface 4 Lite or Mini which runs full windows but at a lower spec.

That's just my guess though.

Thanks if you were looking for a basic tablet for media and simple office tasks would you go Surface 2 or somewhere else? Any of the 8.1 offerings good? My wife isn't a microsoft fanboy but I can't be bothered to support android and don't let apple in the house!

I've used a few of the Atom based 8/1 devices and they suck balls, an RT device is much nicer but is app limited, especially if you want to use it for media as there is STILL no VLC although I wouldnt expect to have to wait much longer for it if they can get it through QC..

I would guess that there will be some sort of annoucement re Surface stuff end of Jan.

If I was to get another one, I would go Chinese the specs are so much better, you can even get 2048*1536 screens and they're 150-200. Still not totally sold on current atom. Hoping that cherry trail next year will be the one.
I like the look of the telecast x98, just two issues 4:3 screen and no home button.
