*** The Official Microsoft Surface Thread ***

So Ces is on and several Intel M tablets announced.

But anyone any idea on benchmarks for CPU/gfx
Baytrail or what ever the newest atom is.
Cherry trail which is atom about to be released
Intel m (which is lowest watt Broadwell)
I3/i5/i7 broadwell U
And the old i3/i5/i7 in the surface pro 3.

Toshiba and Asus have announced Intel m tablets, which are completely fatness and meant to last around 8hours. Which looks like a significant advantage over surface pro 3. But how does Intel m compare.

my current laptop i3-2357m 1633 17w
intel M 5y70 @ 1.1GHz 2842 (max turbo 2.6Ghz) 4.5w
Intel M 5Y10 @ 0.8Ghz 2617 (max turbo 2.0Ghz max) 4.5w
Atom Z3795 @ 1.6GHz 1658 (which I believe is the current top of the range atom) 2w
i7 4650u @ 1.7GHz 4170 (found in i7 Surface pro 3) 15w
i5 4300u @1.9ghz 3764 (i5 surface Pro 3) 15w
I3 4020y @ 1.5Ghz 2235 (i3 surface Pro 3) 11.5w

They are looking very good indeed, totally fanless. Wonder how good the gfx are, I can't find a direct comparison.
currently running a GT 540M.
I hope it matches or beats that.

Also can't find benchmarks for the U processors. Which are 15w compared to the Ms at 4.5w

Looks like pro tablets are finally where I want them, let alone when the Broadwell U cpus come out in fanned tablets.

For what I use my Pro3 for I would like a newer CPU/GPU setup, something that would run fanless for 90% of the time, but still have a fan for when I was hammering the system, rather have a fan and not need it than not have it and the system overheat.
I would also like 16Gb of RAM.

intel m is slightly disappointing on gfx

surface pro 3 i7 Intel HD 5000 602
Surface Pro 3 i5 Intel HD 4400 537
GT 540m 687 (my curren't laptop)
intel M 5y70 Intel HD 5300 345

will have to wait and see what the Broadwell U delivers, should be far more powerful, although will require fan and will be fair bit worse on battery.

I'm noticing the nib on my Surface pen is rather soft, I don't mind this, but it seems to wear down rather fast, anyone know where I can get replacements?

Given they are removable I would guess so, mines not that bad, a bit flat on one side but then I dont use it that often tbh.

One of my customers whipped out a SP3 in a meeting this week. Very impressed. It was the first time I've felt old-school with my RMBP on the desk.

Since I rarely use my Surface RT for watching videos (typically only on trains/planes), hadn't noticed that Microsoft had added native MKV support.

Fantastic addition! Worked flawlessly on our flight this week. :)

Maybe its just due to boredom but I was looking around for a tablet for uni work. I see a lot of reviewers slating the Surface 2 RT because it isn't full fat 8.1 but is there any better tablet for Office use/web browsing/the occasional film that can also use a keyboard?

I'm aware of the asus T100/200 but is there going to be a noticeable performance decrease on the surface compared to them? The surface still has a higher res screen and better battery life. I already have a 17.3 inch laptop for anything more intensive but the battery isn't amazing and its getting noticeably worse over time so it has stopped becoming useful for when i'm out and about.

Anyone had an issue with a surface pro 1/2 charger?

Mine is intermittent now.

Think its the figure of 8 cable but wondered if anyone had the same?

EDIT: Nevermind realised I had a spare form an old laptop.

All good now

When. are we going to see cherry trail tablets. I can't see any announcements, despite CPUs shipping to manufactures. Would have thought someone would have announced devices and launch dates.

Really want to see benchmarks.

It will swim, bay trail tablets aren't bad and there's loads if them about.

And keep you minis, I still don't understand why people like minis.

Recent Surface Pro 3 i7 convert here!

So far absolutely love it, there were probably cheaper devices to help keep my life organised through one note but, the ability to easily handle lightroom and then inventor/autocad and even showcase if I put up with the fan was a must, saves on a desktop as annoying I just don't have room as currently living in a shared house at the moment!

The only thing that really, really is annoying me which is the only thing I might return it for is for no reason the CPU will hit 30% and the cooling fan will start when it's idling.

Its a process called Windows Installer Module and it for no reason causes load on the CPU, cant seem to find a fix for it.

Has anyone else had this issue, i'm totally up to date with windows updates and about to do the SSD fix mentioned above, it should definitely not just be sitting on my desk whirring away when all that's open is task manager and a hardware monitor!

(still love it though even if i'm paranoid of dropping!)

That's what I had heard about the i7, it was overly sensitive, and went with the i5 opetion, and I only notice the fan when pushing hard on a programme really, though sometimes I think the heat from the battery charging can kick it on as well.

I got the i7 because I could, the noise doesnt bother me.

Oh, and get the dock.
I can also recommend the Snugg case/wallet thing
