*** The Official Microsoft Surface Thread ***

The Sony looks interesting, sort of in between the BayTrail tablets and Surface Pro. However it's more expensive, slower, and by the looks of that kickstand can't replace an ultrabook in the way Surface Pro can.

Still nice to see a lot more choice then this time last year.

True. However, id rather the Surface but the lack of LTE / 3G is a PITA.

So Dell can release Android tablets for circa £130, but the practically the same Windows RT variant is £100+ more with almost exactly the same innards. :/

It's worth noting at this point that RT is represented purely by the Surface 2 - there are no other OEMs seemingly interested in making ARM-based Windows tablets. It will be interesting what this does for the platform.

The Nokia tablet will be RT. But I guess you could count Nokia as MS now.

The platform is WinRT, not Windows RT. And we already know what's scheduled to happen with Windows RT. The only thing of interest is whether this is going to be the last ~10 inch Surface running Windows RT.

You could even speculate that they've telegraphed their intentions for the Surface by dropping the RT branding early. There is a really good chance that the Surface 3 will be x86 in my opinion.

Rt isnt going anywhere. Also Nokia is 99% going to announce an rt tablet.

As well as it looks like rt and wp will be combined, before the total integration of all windows os into one single os.

I don't suppose any one knows if you are able to get student discount on the Surface Pro 2 in the UK?

I've seen a few posts in America claiming they are able to, but in the UK I can only see student discount for the original Surface and surface Pro.

Does anyone know if the skydrive/Skype deals are only if you buy directly from Microsoft? This thread suggests they are, but its about the US

Has to be when you buy it anywhere. MS would not have announced it so publicly if they were going to be funny about it.

The person on the forum went into Best Buy, which is like asking a random employee in Currys if they know anything.

Really hope you do get the SkyDrive / Skype when buying from elsewhere, because I'll be buying from John Lewis as they offer an extra years warranty.

Would be a tough choice between the extra warranty and the free Skydrive/Skype!

i would get the pro 2 over a surface/RT.

RT lacks apps still and cant run full windows x86 apps

Costs twice as much, less battery time.
Its not like people are buying it expecting it to run desktop apps, we know what it can and cant do and the state of the store.
Lots of people simply don't need traditional desktop support.
The only reason i would like but cant afford a pro, is due to computer games (sky go would be nice as well, but i don't use it often) .
Other than that RT runs everything I need. Office, audible, Netflix, youtube, mail, weather, news & several different types of maps.
Exactly what i have on iPad except you can use office, sd cards and a whole host of other benefits like split screen, keyboard cover etc.

Why not get a nexus 7 that's even more cheaper and has better support for apps?

Because android don't have all the cool OS support, or integration with other platforms etc. windows is by far the best os imo.
And other than sky go, windows has all the apps i use anyway.
Plus it would be nexus 10 not nexus 7

Pro battery life is good, but its still not upto arm/atom life.
Again it depends what you use it for, why pay twice as much for less battery life, if you don't use desktop apps. What happens if you want that 10+ hours arm gives.

Not to mention if you add up the cost (assuming you'd use it) of the "free" Microsoft Office, 200GB Skydrive and free Skype international calls the actual "cost" of Surface 2 is significantly lower
